UFC 319: Carlos Prates and Lerone Murphy deliver rare spinning back elbow KOs in back-to-back fights

The UFC 319 crowd experienced some deja vu toward the end of the night. None of them were complaining. In the third fight of the main card, Carlos Prates hammered Geoff Neal with a spinning back elbow to the head for a KO in the final second of the first round Neal was barely responsive on the floor as Prates began celebrating. It was the ninth spinning back elbow KO in UFC history, and Prates' UFC-best fifth KO since the start of 2024. That would have been the moment of the night... and then the exact same thing happened in the next fight. In the second round of the co-main event, Lerone Murphy welcomed Aaron Pico to the UFC with another spinning back elbow KO in the first round, the 10th in UFC history. Both fighters were understandably amped after their wins. Prates got a big bounce back after a loss to Ian Machado Garry in April, which ended an 11-fight win streak. He was feeling good enough that he asked UFC CEO Dana White, from the Octagon, for both a $50,000 bonus and a fight against Leon Edwards in the upcoming UFC card in Rio de Janeiro in October: 'I'm feeling amazing. Tomorrow will be my birthday, please give me a fight in Brazil. $50K bonus, let's go, let's party. I think the co-main event in Rio should be Carlos Prates vs. Leon Edwards. The time is now.' The Brazilian got both, which is not how White usually does business. As for Murphy, the win continues an undefeated run to begin his professional career at 17-0-1. He took the fight on two-and-a-half-weeks notice against Pico, who was making his UFC debut after an impressive run at Bellator. Murphy demanded a title shot against UFC featherweight champ Alexander Volkanovski, which Volkanovski immediately accepted via social media. Like Prates, it was also quickly confirmed Murphy would also receive a $50,000 bonus.

UFC 319: Carlos Prates KOs Geoff Neal with spinning back elbow in final second of first round

Carlos Prates made the first round end with a buzzer rather than a thud at UFC 319. In the final seconds of the opening frame, "The Nightmare" landed a spinning back elbow to the head of veteran Geoff Neal for the wildest finish of the night. Neal was barely responsive on the floor as Prates began celebrating. It was the ninth spinning back elbow KO in UFC history, and Prates' UFC-best fifth KO since the start of 2024. The win gives Prates a big bounce back after a loss to Ian Machado Garry in April, which ended an 11-fight win streak. Prates was feeling good enough that he asked UFC CEO Dana White, from the Octagon, for both a $50,000 bonus and a spot in the upcoming UFC card in Rio de Janeiro in October. The Brazilian got both, which is not how White usually conducts business. We'll see whom Prates gets in Rio, but he's once again on track for a big opponent in a career that has more than delivered since he joined the promotion in 2024. His record now sits at 22-7 (5-1 in the UFC), while Neal took his third loss in four fights since 2023.

46-year-old Manny Pacquiao confirms December boxing return

[Source] Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao has confirmed he will return to the boxing ring in December, just months after fighting to a majority draw against WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios in Las Vegas on July 19. Speaking to reporters upon arriving in Manila from a vacation in Italy, the 46-year-old Hall of Famer said, 'This year… in December,' affirming his plan to fight again before the end of 2025. The eight-division world champion recently climbed to the top spot in the WBC welterweight rankings, putting him in position for another title opportunity. While Pacquiao's next opponent has yet to be finalized, several options are under review. A rematch with Barrios is a possibility, but his camp has indicated a preference for facing WBA 'regular' welterweight champion Rolando 'Rolly' Romero, citing the commercial appeal and logistical ease since both fighters are under Premier Boxing Champions. However, Romero is reportedly in advanced talks for a December rematch with Ryan Garcia, a development that could complicate negotiations for a bout with Pacquiao.
