Networking within importers: PKBC to organise expo in Nairobi on July 22
The meeting of the PKBC was held and taking a major step forward in bolstering trade relations between Pakistan and Kenya, has decided to organize an expo of Pakistan importers in Nairobi. Meeting was chaired by CEO PKBC Bonventure, alongside key council members and business leaders and the discussions focused on PKBC's role in advancing bilateral trade.
The meeting also emphasized the importance of creating stronger frameworks to support both Pakistani and Kenyan business communities, with the ultimate goal of increasing the volume and diversity of imports and exports between the two nations.
A central point of the meeting was the planning of the PKBC Importers Networking Breakfast & Expo, set to take place on 22nd July 2025 in Nairobi. This premier event is expected to draw leading Pakistani exporters, prominent Kenyan importers, government officials from both countries and representatives from major trade associations and chambers.
Rafique Seluman, General Secretary informed that the exp will be a dynamic platform for impactful business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-government (B2G) networking. This event will be followed by factory visits on 23rd July, offering participants firsthand insights into key industries and operations', he added
He said the PKBC continues to position itself as a vital bridge between the private sectors of Pakistan and Kenya, aiming to unlock new business opportunities, strengthen commercial ties, and drive mutual economic growth.

OGDCL, PPL boost Reko Diq commitments to $715mn apiece
Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) and Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) have revised their funding commitments for Phase 1 of the Reko Diq copper and gold project. Each company's pro-rata share now stands at $715 million, subject to adjustment for actual financing costs and inflation. After accounting for project-level financing, the expected shareholder contributions of both PPL and OGDCL amount to $391 million each, the E&Ps disclosed the development in their respective notices to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Tuesday. OGDCL holds an 8.33% stake in the Reko Diq copper and gold project, when aggregated with the 8.33% stakes held by each of PPL and Government Holdings (Private) Limited, comprises a collective 25% interest in the project that is owned by the three Pakistani State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs). Barrick, Komatsu ink $440mn deal for Pakistan's Reko Diq mines The SOEs' interest in the project company, i.e., Reko Diq Mining Company (Private) Limited (RDMC), is held indirectly via Pakistan Minerals (Private) Limited. 25% of the shares in RDMC are held by the Government of Balochistan (15% on a fully funded basis, which is held indirectly through Balochistan Mineral Resources Limited, and 10% on a free carried basis, which is held directly by the Government of Balochistan). The remaining 50% of the shares in RDMC are held (indirectly) by Barrick Mining Corporation (formerly Barrick Gold Corporation), which is the operator of the project. Initially, in March 2025, the boards of both OGDCL and PPL approved a pro-rata funding commitment of $627 million each, with shareholder contributions of around $349 million apiece. However, after negotiations with lenders and input from an independent technical consultant, project estimates were revised. 'Since the aforementioned approval, the negotiations with the lenders of the project financing have considerably advanced,' the company said. OGDCL commissions Jhal Magsi Project in Balochistan 'Furthermore, the Phase 1 development cost of the project has been revised, mainly on account of conservatism built in on the recommendation of the independent technical consultant of the lenders with respect to the delay in commencement of production by six months to 2029 compared with the earlier plan of 2028 and other cost contingencies. 'Additionally, financing costs have been increased due to a revision in pricing and the rise in the level of project financing to $3.5 billion from the previous estimate of $3 billion,' it added. Despite these revisions, the project remains economically viable. As part of the financing arrangements, the boards of both companies also approved execution of the SOE Completion Agreement — under which the SOEs will provide a joint and several guarantee for 27.78% of RDMC's secured debt obligations until financial completion — as well as the Transfer Restrictions Agreement, which imposes minimum shareholding requirements for project sponsors until project debt has been fully repaid. The commitments remain subject to shareholders' and regulatory approvals Reko Diq is expected to become a world-class copper-gold mine, contributing to Pakistan's economic development.

CM directs to use modern Japanese tech for waste treatment
LAHORE: 'Japan's modern technology and methods will be used for sewage and waste management in Punjab,' said Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif during her visit to Japan's largest waste water treatment plant. She inspected the waste treatment systems of Asahi, Yokohama City, Kanagawa, Washimaku and Yodogawa. The chief minister was given a detailed briefing on methods of collecting garbage and waste water along with waste disposal systems of Japanese cities. She was apprised by the authorities concerned, 'Yokohama is the second largest city in Japan in terms of population, its Solid Waste and Wastewater Treatment Plant treats 1.5 million liters of wastewater daily.' She was also briefed, 'Yokohama Waste Treatment Plant is also operating several plants that generate energy from waste. This energy is used for heating systems for the local population.' Yokohama, Punjab agree on ‘city-to-city' cooperation
LAHORE: 'Yokohama and Punjab have agreed on 'city-to-city' cooperation in various fields including environment protection and providing modern development systems to cities,' said Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif during her visit to Japan's commercial, economic and cultural center 'Yokohama.' The CM and her delegation members were given a detailed briefing on urban development at Yokohama Town Hall. She discussed on how to bring construction quality of roads and buildings in Punjab at par with that of Japan. She also discussed various possibilities of cooperation between Ravi Urban Development Authority (RUDA) and Yokohama. The Chief Minister reviewed possibilities of cooperation in running a high-speed train between Lahore and Islamabad, besides upgradation of railway infrastructure in the province. She also reviewed the latest Japanese chairlift and air cabin projects. She was apprised, 'Kun-Hun' the three cities of Tokyo, Kawasaki and Yokohama are located in a region called industrial zone of Japan.' She was briefed by the authorities concerned, 'Yokohama is the second largest city in Japan in terms of population, and in May 2025, annual conference of Asian Development Bank declared Yokohama the most developed city in Asia in terms of environmental improvement.' Moreover, the CM who is on a five-day official visit to Japan, visited different parts of 'Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse,' whose new name is 'Newport Pier Bonded Warehouse' due to its location along the port. She also visited a centre for teaching skills to children, under community welfare in the warehouse. The Chief Minister saw children making things from paper and other materials. The children showed her various examples of their creative talents. She congratulated the children and interacted with them. Maryam Nawaz Sharif said, 'A model of community welfare is also being promoted in Punjab.' She added, 'We are also adopting methods of education and skill development on modern lines, besides providing facilities to children of Punjab.'
