Disaster management authority writes to DoT to ensure uninterrupted service in coastal and Malnad regions

The Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority has written to the Department of Telecommunications to ensure uninterrupted communication in the coastal and Malnad regions, which are prone to floods and landslips during the monsoon season.
The authority wrote the letter on Thursday after Chikkamagaluru Deputy Commissioner Meena Nagara raised the issue of telecommunication and internet disruptions in the Malnad region, critically impacting the disaster response, in a meeting held on May 20, to review preparedness for the ensuing southwest monsoon.
The Deputy Commissioner, in the meeting, stated that telecommunication and internet disruption were caused by power outages in the Malnad region. The telecom service providers (TSPs) fail to ensure adequate fuel for backup generators or sufficient battery recharging of Base Transceiver Station (BTS) towers.
Honnamba S., commissioner of the authority, on Thursday, wrote to G.S. Sutar, Deputy Director General, Bengaluru, to instruct all TSPs and Internet Service Providers (ISP) in the coastal and Malnad district to ensure uninterrupted services during the monsoon.
In the letter, the officer stated that Standard Operation Procedure issued by the DoT, clearly stated that the TSPs and ISPs should provide sufficient fuel, power, and essential equipment backups to BTS towers to ensure uninterrupted communication during monsoon in areas prone to disasters.
Several areas of Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, Shivamogga, Hassan, Uttara Kannada, Udupi, and Dakshina Kannada districts receive 4,000 to 5,500 mm of rainfall annually. The areas are prone to floods and landslips. However, these areas face network issues. During heavy rains the problem worsens, making it difficult for the administration to get reports about floods and landslips from the ground and respond to the situation.

‘John Candy: I Like Me' Documentary to Open 2025 Toronto International Film Festival
It may only be June, but the fall film festival picture is starting to come into relief, as today the Toronto International Film Festival has announced its 2025 opening night gala pick: the world premiere of Colin Hanks' documentary 'John Candy: I Like Me.' The Opening Night Gala will take place on Thursday, September 4, at Roy Thomson Hall. The film is billed as 'a heartfelt tribute to the legendary Canadian icon, with stories and memories from Candy's family, closest friends, and longtime collaborators.' 'Comedy fans all over the world grew up on John Candy's humor,' said Cameron Bailey, CEO of TIFF in an official statement. 'We love that John's global career started in Toronto, and we can't wait to share 'John Candy: I Like Me' with everyone at this year's Opening Night Gala premiere. Rory McIlroy was ‘pretty annoyed' non-conforming driver news became public

As a result McIlroy, uncharacteristically, declined to speak to the media over all four days and left Quail Hollow without uttering a word in public after finishing joint-47th. Two-and-a-half weeks later the Northern Irishman was back in front of the microphone ahead of the RBC Canadian Open at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley and sought to justify his media blackout. 'I was a little p***ed off because I knew that Scottie's driver had failed but my name was the one that was leaked. It was supposed to stay confidential,' said McIlroy. 'I didn't want to get up there and say something that I regretted, either, because I'm trying to protect Scottie – I don't want to mention his name – I'm trying to protect TaylorMade. I'm trying to protect the USGA, PGA of America, myself. 'With Scottie's stuff, that's not my information to share. That process is supposed to be kept confidential and it wasn't for whatever reason. That's why I was pretty annoyed at that.' McIlroy, a two-time Canadian Open winner, added: 'The PGA was a bit of a weird week. I didn't play well the first day, so I wanted to go practise, so that was fine. Second day we finished late, I wanted to go back and see (daughter) Poppy before she went to bed. 'The driver news broke, Saturday I was supposed to tee off at 8:20 in the morning and I didn't tee off until almost two in the afternoon, another late finish, and I was just tired, wanted to go home. 'Then Sunday, I just wanted to get on the plane and go back to Florida.' Winning at Augusta brought McIlroy his long-awaited career Grand Slam, becoming only the sixth male golfer to achieve the feat, but he admits now he has conquered that peak things have changed for him. Asked what challenge was left for him the 36-year-old said: 'I don't know if I'm chasing anything. 'I would certainly say that the last few weeks I've had a couple of weeks off and going and grinding on the range for three or four hours every day is maybe a little tougher than it used to be.
