Oregon Legislature Repeals Contested Wildfire Hazard Map

Oregon Legislature Repeals Contested Wildfire Hazard Map

Al Arabiya11 hours ago

Oregon lawmakers have voted to repeal the state's contentious wildfire hazard map, which subjected homeowners in certain areas at high risk of wildfires to stricter building codes and requirements to reduce vegetation on their properties.
The measure passed the state House with just one vote against Tuesday after passing the state Senate unanimously in April. Republicans had called for the map's repeal throughout the legislative session and accused Democrats of stalling it. The bill now heads to Democratic Gov. Tina Kotek. 'Despite an incredibly frustrating political process, we appreciate the members who have chosen to do the right thing in repealing these maps,' Republican House Minority Leader Christine Drazan said. She added in her statement that the maps had created 'chaos' in rural areas.
An updated version of the state-developed maps released earlier this year created new rules for those living in the most fire-prone areas that also border wildlands such as forests or grasslands. The building and so-called defensible space provisions impacted six percent of the state's roughly 1.9 million tax lots–a reduction from an earlier version developed in 2022 but retracted after homeowners raised concerns that it would increase insurance premiums.
The building codes were set to require new construction in high-hazard areas in the so-called wildland–urban interface to have fire-resistant features and to apply to existing homes if certain upgrades were made.
The bill passed by the Legislature revokes those defensible space and building code requirements, instead directing state agencies to create model codes that local governments can choose to adopt.
The two maps showing wildfire hazard levels and the wildland–urban interface were released by the Oregon Department of Forestry and developed by Oregon State University scientists.
Under a state law passed in 2023, insurers cannot use a wildfire hazard map produced by a state agency to cancel or decline to renew a homeowner insurance policy or to increase premiums.
But many who opposed the maps said they were flawed and placed burdens on homeowners. Experts who worked on the maps said they were an important step in identifying and protecting fire-prone areas as the state continues to contend with record-breaking wildfires.
Oregon's wildfire season last year was a record in terms of cost and acres burned, and wind-fueled blazes over Labor Day weekend in 2020 killed nine people and destroyed thousands of homes. California, Arizona, and New Mexico have had wildfire hazard maps for years. Last year, lawmakers in Washington state ordered the creation of a statewide wildfire risk map, and in 2023 Colorado passed a law establishing a wildfire resiliency code board.

Suspect in US fire attack on Jewish protest in Colorado faces new hate crime charges

The suspect in a Molotov cocktail attack on a march by Jewish protesters in Colorado will face an additional 12 charges for carrying out a hate crime, the US Justice Department said Wednesday. Mohamed Sabry Soliman, an Egyptian national, already faces over 100 criminal counts for allegedly throwing firebombs and spraying burning gasoline at a group of people who gathered on June 1 in support of Israeli hostages held by Hamas. President Donald Trump cited the attack, which injured 15 people, to justify his decision to ban travel from 12 countries to the United States to 'protect" the nation from 'foreign terrorists.' Authorities have said Soliman, 45, was in the United States illegally at the time of the incident as he had overstayed his tourist visa. Alongside the newly announced federal charges, Soliman faces 28 attempted murder charges as well as a bevvy of other counts relating to his alleged use of violence. He also faces a count of animal cruelty for a dog that was hurt. Police who rushed to the scene of the attack found 16 unused Molotov cocktails and a backpack weed sprayer containing gasoline that investigators say Soliman had intended to use as a makeshift flamethrower. In bystander videos, the attacker can be heard screaming 'End Zionists!' and 'Killers!' It came less than two weeks after the fatal shooting of two Israeli embassy staffers outside a Jewish museum in Washington, where a 31-year-old suspect, who shouted 'Free Palestine,' was arrested.

US hits back at accounts Iran moved enriched uranium

President Donald Trump's administration hit back Wednesday at accounts Iran may have moved enriched uranium before US bombing, as a row grew on how much the strikes set back Tehran's nuclear program. Trump, seeking credit for ordering the military action and then quickly announcing a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, has lashed out angrily at media accounts of a classified report that doubted the extent of damage to Iranian nuclear sites. Another key question raised by experts is whether Iran, preparing for the strike, moved out some 400 kilogram (880 pounds) of enriched uranium -- which could now be hidden elsewhere in the vast country. 'I can tell you, the United States had no indication that that enriched uranium was moved prior to the strikes, as I also saw falsely reported,' White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News. 'As for what's on the ground right now, it's buried under miles and miles of rubble because of the success of these strikes on Saturday evening,' she said. Vice President JD Vance, asked about the uranium on Sunday, had sounded less definitive and said the United States would discuss the issue with Iran. 'We're going to work in the coming weeks to ensure that we do something with that fuel,' Vance told ABC News program 'This Week.' The quantity of uranium had been reported by the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, with which Iran is considering severing cooperation after the Israeli and US strikes on its nuclear program. 'The IAEA lost visibility on this material the moment hostilities began,' the agency's chief, Rafael Grossi, told France 2 television. But he added: 'I don't want to give the impression that it's been lost or hidden.' The US military said it dropped 14 GBU-57 bunker-buster bombs -- powerful 13,600-kilogram (30,000-pound) weapons -- on three Iranian nuclear sites. Trump has repeatedly said that the attack 'obliterated' Iran's nuclear facilities, including the key site of Fordow buried inside a mountain. But an initial classified assessment, first reported by CNN, was said to have concluded that the strike did not destroy key components and that Iran's nuclear program was set back only months at most. Trump's intelligence chiefs also pushed back on Wednesday. CIA Director John Radcliffe in a statement said that new intelligence from a 'historically reliable' source indicated that 'several key Iranian nuclear facilities were destroyed and would have to be rebuilt over the course of years.' The uranium is enriched to 60 percent -- above levels for civilian usage but still below weapons grade.

Trump calls Zohran Mamdani a ‘Communist Lunatic' after historic NYC primary victory

Zohran Mamdani pulled off a major upset on Tuesday night after clinching New York City's Democratic mayoral primary victory. The 33-year-old Muslim Democratic socialist's unexpected success drew sharp criticism from US President Donald Trump, who launched a series of posts mocking Mamdani's appearance, voice and intelligence, labeling him a '100% Communist Lunatic.' 'Zohran Mamdani, a 100% Communist Lunatic, has just won the Dem Primary, and is on his way to becoming Mayor,' Trump wrote on Truth Social. 'We've had Radical Lefties before, but this is getting a little ridiculous. He looks TERRIBLE, his voice is grating, he's not very smart.' In a separate post, Trump made fun of Democrats in Congress for backing Mamdani, including Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Trump also called Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer 'our Great Palestinian Senator,' adding, 'Cryin' Chuck Schumer… is groveling over' Mamdani. History was made in the Big Apple, as Mamdani celebrates his victory in New York City's Democratic mayoral primary, which positions him to become the first Muslim mayor of the city. New York City is home to both the largest Jewish population outside of Israel and a substantial Muslim community. For many voters, this makes the Israel-Palestine conflict central to ongoing debates about the United States' response to the war in Gaza. Mamdani has firmly adopted a pro-Palestinian stance, attracting criticism from pro-Israel organizations. He has declared that if elected mayor, he would order the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should he visit New York, referring to the International Criminal Court's arrest warrant issued in November last year. With Mamdani positioned as likely Democratic nominee for New York City mayor, the general election campaign leading up to November is expected to draw national attention to politics in America's largest city.
