Classic rock guitarist, ‘Real American' singer Rick Derringer dies at 77
His longtime wife, Jenda Derringer, told TMZ he died 'peacefully' at a hospital in Ormond Beach, Florida, after being taken off life support following a medical emergency involving his heart. He reportedly underwent triple bypass surgery two months ago.
The Ohio native first gained fame with his band the McCoys, whose 'Hang on Sloopy' was a No. 1 hit in 1965. He went on to work with Edgar and Johnny Winters in their bands, playing on classic rock radio staples like 'Frankenstein,' another No. 1 hit.
He also collaborated with Steely Dan, 'Weird Al' Yankovic, Todd Rundgren, Alice Cooper, Barbara Streisand and toured several times with Cyndi Lauper. He played the guitar solo on Bonnie Tyler's 'Total Eclipse of the Heart,' written by frequent partner Jim Steinman.
Derringer had a solo hit of his own with 'Real American,' a song recorded for a soundtrack for the World Wrestling Federation that became Hulk Hogan's theme music for several years. Lauper provided backing vocals on the tune.
Richard Dean Zehringer was born in Celina, Ohio, on Aug. 5, 1947. He began playing music with his brother Randy in the late 1950s. Their band the McCoys was chosen by a set of record producers to record 'Hang on Sloopy,' which has since become a popular in-stadium anthem at Ohio State football games and Cleveland Guardians games.
Later in his career, he joined star-studded lineups on tours with Ringo Starr and Peter Frampton while ultimately releasing more than 25 albums, including several blues and jazz LPs.
Following a late-in-life conversion, he and his wife produced several Christian-themed albums.

Jacob Elordi Is Completely Unrecognizable in Frankenstein
Originally appeared on E! Online is bringing one of pop culture's most famous monsters to life—literally. In the first look at Guillermo del Toro's upcoming Frankenstein movie, the Euphoria star transformed into the titular scientist's reanimated creation. With his disfigured face wrapped up in tatter rags, Elordi was barely recognizable as a creature fused together by Dr. Viktor Frankenstein (played by Oscar Isaac). And according del Toro , the 28-year-old was the "perfect actor" to take up the role after dropped out of the project due to scheduling conflicts. "We have a supernaturally good connection," the filmmaker told Vanity Fair in an interview published July 28. "It's like, very few words. Very few things I have to say, and he does it." Likewise, makeup artist Mike Hill couldn't be more thrilled with Elordi taking up the mantle. 'What attracted me to him was his gangliness and his wrists. It was this looseness,' Hill told the magazine. "I was like, 'I don't know who else you could get with a physicality like this.'" He continued of Elordi, "His demeanor is innocent, but it's encompassed in a six-foot-five frame. He could really do a lot of damage if this man really wanted to be a bad guy." But Elordi understands that he's proverbially standing on the shoulders of giants in this role. After all, past actors who've portrayed Frankenstein's monster includes Boris Karloff, Christopher Lee, Robert De Niro and Benedict Cumberbatch. "At first I thought, 'I'll stay away from this. I want to do my own thing,'" he said of visiting past portrayals of the monster. "And then I asked Guillermo, 'Should I watch the other Frankensteins?' And he goes, 'What the f--k do you mean?'" Reasoning that he didn't want to be "influenced" by other actors, Elordi recalled how de Toro assured him that his performance would not be affect. "He says, 'My friend, it's a movie, it can't f--king hurt you,'" Elordi added. "I went home, and I just binged them." Also starring Mia Goth, Charles Dance and Christoph Waltz, Frankenstein hits Netflix in November. For now, keep reading for more dramatic onscreen transformations... More from E! Is Katy Perry Dating Justin Trudeau?
Today in news that no one could have possibly predicted, it looks like Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau are kinda/maybe/sorta dating? Or at the very least they were spotted having dinner—during what looks to be a cozy night out. TMZ broke the news (and has pics!) of Katy and the former Canadian Prime Minister eating at what they refer to as "a swanky restaurant in Montreal," where eyewitnesses report that they "sipped cocktails and shared several dishes ... including one with lobster." For what it's worth, Katy is currently in Canada on tour—so maybe they're just catching up? Or maybe this is a date, who can say! Either way, a couple things to note: 1. Justin split from his wife Sophie in 2023, after 18 years of marriage. 2. Katy and Orlando Bloom called it quits earlier this year, with their rep confirming the news to Us Weekly by saying "Orlando and Katy have been shifting their relationship over the past many months to focus on coparenting. They will continue to be seen together as a family, as their shared priority is — and always will be — raising their daughter with love, stability and mutual respect." Meanwhile, a source told People that "Katy and Orlando have been suffering through the same problems that have plagued them for years. [They had] too much going on in their lives, which makes it hard to find time for each other and iron out disagreements. When they don't communicate properly, their relationship dips to a low level." This insider added that they'd "been living on an island of stress" and that "sometimes love isn't enough to keep two people with different styles and outlooks on how things are done [together]. It can overshadow the love."
