
Sunny June boosts UK retail sales, fashion edges up, says ONS
That May figure was actually revised downwards from the estimated 2.7% the ONS had released this time last month. So while the 0.9% rise for June is good news, we have to bear in mind that a revision a few weeks down the line could improve it -- or it could wipe it out altogether.
Sales volumes in June rose by 1.7% year on year, but volumes were down by 1.6% compared with their pre-Covid level in February 2020.
More broadly, sales volumes rose by 0.2% in Q2 (Apr to June) 2025 when compared with Q1.
Digging into the detail, the ONS said food store sales rose following a fall in May 2025, with retailers reporting the warm weather had a positive effect. Food store sales volumes were up 0.7% month on month but non-food stores -- the total of department, clothing, household and other non-food stores -- rose marginally by only 0.2%.
However, department stores and clothing retailers both rose (although clothing only marginally) "with mention of promotions and good weather". But these snippets of good news were partly offset by falls in household goods stores (such as furniture stores) and other non-food retailers (such as those selling secondhand goods, which includes auction houses). Comments from retailers attributed these drops to lower footfall.
Non-store retailers' sales volumes, which mainly includes online retailers, rose by 1.7% in June 2025, putting them at their highest level since February 2022. Again, promotions and the good weather contributed to the increase.
Frustratingly, the ONS no longer gives percentages for sales values in physical stores. But it does offer them for non-store retailers and it said the amount spent online rose by 2.3% month on month and by 4.5% year on year.
Total spend -- that is, in-store and online sales combined -- rose by 1.1% over the month. As a result, the proportion of sales made online rose from 27.4% in May 2025 to 27.8% in June.
Analysts stay cautious
As usual, analysts have been sharing their views on the numbers and Dr Kris Hamer, director of insight at the British Retail Consortium, welcomes the figures but added that the situation has deteriorated as the BRC's own data shows consumer confidence has tumbled in July, and "sales performance over the rest of the summer is at risk".
Also commenting from within the retail sector, Deann Evans, MD EMEA, at Shopify, said that retailers "will be pleased to see sales bounce back in June after falling in May. A record-breaking month for warm weather is likely to have contributed to this boost". The company's data showed hot weather-linked products seeing explosive growth.
But "shared cultural moments also drove spending, with consumers looking ahead to major sporting events. Wimbledon certainly captured attention with our data revealing sales of tennis rackets and tennis balls grew by 62.5% and 12.1%, respectively, year on year".
Evans was more upbeat than Hamer and added that "this highlights a compelling opportunity for retailers to harness the potential of cultural trends -- and offers encouragement that sales figures will continue to grow for the remainder of the summer months.
"However, turning cultural buzz into meaningful commercial impact requires agility and speed from retailers to offer products and experiences that immerse consumers in the moment. Shoppers are seeking a sense of participation and retail is a natural avenue for this. By staying attuned to the cultural pulse, retailers can unlock new ways to drive growth and build loyalty throughout the year. This will be the key to continued success in the weeks and months ahead.'
Meanwhile Jacqui Baker, head of retail at RSM UK and chair of ICAEW's Retail Group, added: "The hot weather helped to lift the mood among consumers, while early sales tempted shoppers to the high street. Consumers purchased new outfits ahead of major sporting events in July including Wimbledon and summer headline concerts led by Beyoncé and Oasis.
'While the June figures are welcome news and consumer confidence ticked up last month, nervousness among consumers persists, and the unexpected rise in inflation won't have helped. The higher price of essentials such as food and fuel will only add to the reluctance among consumers to spend as their discretionary income shrinks.
'Concerns remain in the sector, as retailers increasingly run out of headroom to mitigate rising costs. Many will be hoping the government steps in to provide meaningful reductions in business rates, as well as raising the threshold at which employers' National Insurance becomes payable. It's also hoped that the reintroduction of tax-free shopping is brought back on the table, so the sector doesn't miss out further on valuable retail spend.'
Interestingly too, Sagar Shah, associate partner at McKinsey & Co, highlighted how tough it can be to predict where consumer attention will go next: 'Retailers are operating in a climate where sentiment and spending no longer move in step. Shoppers are increasingly unpredictable, and historic trends only tell part of the story. Real-time insights into customer behaviour will be crucial for anticipating trends before they hit the shelves.'

In Numbers: How the populations of European countries have changed
The EU population grew by almost 1.1 million in 2024, reaching an estimated 450.4 million residents on January 1st 2025, according to data published by the European statistical office Eurostat. The year 2024 was the fourth consecutive year of population growth in the EU, after a drop recorded during the pandemic. The increase is largely due to net migration (the difference between the number of people arriving and those leaving) rather than natural change (the difference between births and deaths). Only six EU countries – France and Sweden, together with Ireland, Cyprus, Luxembourg and Malta – recorded more births than deaths, in addition to positive net migration. Effects of migration Historically, the difference between births and deaths in the EU was positive – yet slowing – until 2011. Since 2012, more deaths than births were recorded but the total EU population has kept increasing due to positive net migration. Only during the Covid-19 pandemic was the negative natural change not compensated by migration, Eurostat says. In 2024, deaths (4.82 million) outnumbered births (3.56 million), resulting in a negative natural change of 1.3 million people. On the other hand, positive net migration was 2.3 million, lower than the almost 3 million of 2022. These factors together made up for a population increase of 1,070,702. On a country level, 19 EU member states saw their population growing while eight saw a decline. The highest growth rates compared to the total population were recorded in Malta (the smallest EU country by population, at 0.6 million), Portugal and Ireland. Denmark was the only EU country with zero natural change and its population was stable at around 5.9 million. Advertisement Except for Latvia, where people emigrating keep outnumbering those immigrating, all EU countries had positive net migration in 2024. In 13 EU countries (Belgium, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Spain, Croatia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Slovenia and Finland), this was the reason for population growth. Largest countries Germany, France and Italy are the largest EU countries by population (19 percent, 15 percent and 13 percent respectively, and comprise almost half of all EU residents. In 2024, Germany had 83.5 million inhabitants compared to 83.4 in 2023, France 68.6 million compared to 68.4 the previous year, and Italy 59.7 million people, a slight decrease over 2023. Spain follows with 49 million people, compared to 48.6 in 2023. In Sweden, the total population reached 10.5 million, and Austria 9.1 million, both representing a slight increase compared to 2023. Norway followed a similar trend, at 5.5 million, and Switzerland's population reached 9 million people, compared to 8.9 in 2023. Advertisement Countries losing population In 2024, the population declined in eight EU countries (Bulgaria, Estonia, Italy, Latvia, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia), as the negative natural change was not offset by immigration. The largest declines were recorded in Latvia, Hungary, Poland and Estonia. Latvia was the only country with both negative natural change and negative net migration. Future trend The EU population grew by about 0.9 million each year between 2005 and 2024, compared to 3 million per year during the 1960s. In 1960, the population of the current EU countries was 354.5 million. In the future, due to the ageing population, the number of deaths is expected to further increase, and if fertility rates remain at current levels, the negative natural change could continue . This is in line with a global trend with a growing number of older adults and fewer under 25, according to an analysis by the Pew Research Centre . This also shows that Europe's median age is 43, making it the oldest region in the world.

Orban vows to veto EU budget over frozen EU funds
The Hungarian government will not vote on the EU budget until Budapest receives its frozen EU funds, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in a speech at the Bálványos Free University on Saturday. According to Orban, the adoption of the EU's record-breaking budget requires unanimity. "And until we get our backlog of money, there will be no new European budget. We will bring it home, and we will not make any concessions on our sovereignty," he said. Approximately €9.5 billion in COVID-19 recovery funding and €8.4 billion in cohesion funds make up the frozen funds by Brussels over persisting concerns about Hungary's democratic backsliding. Brussels and Budapest over the years have been at loggerheads on a range of issues, most recently that of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but the situation has been made worse by the financial issue. Orbán accuses the European Commission of "financial blackmail" and meddling in domestic matters due to its reasons for freezing the funds. Hungary previously unblocked about €10.2 billion of the frozen funds following the adoption of legislation aimed at reducing political meddling in its courts and strengthening judicial independence. However, a complaint was filed by the European Parliament against the EU Commission for its controversial decision to release the €10.2 billion ahead of a crucial summit. Some €18 billion remains frozen, with no signs or indication of progress, but in front of the large audience, Orban vowed to get the EU funds. Orban claims Trump helped avoid World War III The Commission's landmark €2 trillion long-term budget for 2028–2034 emphasises defence and economic competitiveness. For it to pass, it requires unanimous agreement among member states and must also be backed by Parliament, by a majority of its component members. In his speech in Tusványos on Saturday, Viktor Orbán said that the election of US President Donald Trump has helped the world to avoid a third world war for the time being, but the chances of its outbreak are still increasing. Orbán gave a speech with a sinister tone, touching on a variety of topics that included the war in Ukraine and the Fidesz party. The Hungarian PM blasted the EU for backing Ukraine and accused the EU leaders of dangerously waging a trade war with the Trump administration that Europe "cannot win." While some of his claims were typically outlandish, Orban received applause from the audience, with one attendee saying, "We got a very clear, very understandable vision from the Prime Minister. And we are not in an easy situation."

Cognac drags down LVMH's spirits division
The engine driving cognac sales has yet to regain full speed. LVMH acknowledged it in its half-year results, published Thursday, July 24. Moët Hennessy, its wine and spirits division – of which British company Diageo owns 34% – reported an 8% drop in revenue to €2.58 billion. This marks a further slide after an 11% decline over 2024, to €5.9 billion. The blow was even harsher for recurring operating profit, which fell by one-third to €524 million in the first six months of 2025. The group, led by Bernard Arnault, explained the disappointing performance due to "weak demand for cognac" and "the impact on customers of trade tensions weighing on key markets in the US and China." The US and China accounted for 80% of sales of the prized Charente region spirit, whose leading brand is Hennessy. Across the Atlantic, LVMH – and major competitors such as Pernod Ricard, owner of Martell, or Rémy Cointreau, known for its Rémy Martin brand – were caught off guard. After the post-Covid-19 boom, the wave of inflation disrupted consumer behavior. They suddenly became more cautious about spending just as spirits groups continued to raise their prices. The drop-off was abrupt. Chinese customers also adopted a wait-and-see attitude, troubled by their country's economic slowdown. After trade battles On top of this new consumer mindset, fierce trade battles compounded the problem. Since early 2024, cognac has been ensnared in a conflict between Europe and China. The sector breathed a sigh of relief in early July. Although Beijing decided to impose 32% tariffs on European wine-based spirits, most companies that agreed to set a minimum price – in effect, a price increase ranging from 12% to 16% – were granted exemptions. LVMH benefited from this agreement. Likewise, Rémy Cointreau revised down the impact of Chinese tariffs on Friday, July 25, from €40 million to €10 million. Conversely, the impact in the US would rise from €25 million to €35 million.
