All-rounder Beau Webster eyes Ashes selection, turns to shield fixtures to make his case

Australia's all-rounder Beau Webster, despite a positive start to his Test career, which includes four fifties from his seven Tests, isn't taking things for granted, as per the ICC website. Tasmania's latest international cricketing star reasons that Cameron Green, who has impressed since his return at No. 3, will sooner or later return to bowling, and that might open up his spot in the lower middle-order to scrutiny. "When you're at the top level, you're fighting to hang on to your spot. With all the wonderful cricketers around the country, and especially a guy like Cameron Green, he batted at the top of the order [in the West Indies], and didn't bowl," Webster said. "He's obviously going to be back bowling this summer, which is going to put a bit more pressure on my spot at No. 6 as the allrounder. But I welcome it," he added. While Marnus Labuschagne has thrown his hat in the ring as a contender to open for Australia, if Green's bowling returns are encouraging, the Australian selectors can find ways to accommodate the experienced Labuschagne into the XI while also playing specialist openers. This would leave the seven-Test-old Webster under the scanner, but the all-rounder is ready to once again prove his worth in the domestic red-ball setup. "I feel like I've been in this position before a lot in my career. I've got to score runs to either go to the next level or stay on the team. It's certainly not unfamiliar. I'm looking forward to once again showing what I can do at [Sheffield] Shield level, and hopefully, be lining up in that first Ashes Test in Perth," Webster added. "It's going to be a massive summer. I'm sure the team's going to change a little bit throughout those five Tests. I'm just going to do everything I can to make sure I'm there for all five." Webster will have four prospective Shield fixtures to make a strong case for Australia's selectors to pick two all-rounders for the upcoming Ashes. The all-rounder has complete faith in his capabilities, should the call-up come for him. "I feel like I've scored some tough runs. At the same time, there's no hundred next to my name, which I would have loved to go on with one of those [half-centuries]. I felt like I was batting as well as I have in a number of those innings. I feel like I've got all the tools to succeed this summer in the Ashes with what England are going to potentially bring," he said. The series starts on 21 November and will be a part of the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27.

BCCI must protect fans' interest at World Cups

Even if it's an ICC event, this seems to be a uniquely Indian problem at the moment. The public pre-sale of ticket ballots for next year's Women's T20 World Cup in the UK finished last week; for an event scheduled for June-July 2026, the winners will be notified by this September. Just to drive home the point, there is also no word on the ticketing process or schedule for the next men's T20 World Cup, scheduled in India and Sri Lanka in February-March 2026. Announcing the basics such as ticketing and the schedule gives fans the opportunity to plan their leaves and sort out their travel in advance. But another World Cup in India is in danger of not hosting too many overseas fans because the authorities are once again shortchanging the cricket-loving public. Nobody doubts their ability to bring in a lot of money and organise glamorous events, but they keep failing at the fundamentals needed for any event. Both the ICC and the BCCI will do well to remember that fans are the lifeblood of any sport, and there's only so much they would be willing to suffer before walking away.

'There's No One Who Can Replace Rohit': Rayudu Wants Hitman To Captain India In 2027 ODI World Cup

Rohit has won two ICC titles as India captain, and under his leadership, India also finished as runners-up in the 2023 edition of the men's ODI World Cup and WTC final. Former Indian middle-order batter Ambati Rayudu has reserved big praise for India's ODI captain, Rohit Sharma. According to Rayudu, who, after playing 55 ODIs and six T20Is for India from 2013 to 2019, quit international cricket and donned the hat of an expert, no one can replace Rohit in ODIs. Rayudu feels Rohit's batting, his captaincy and the confidence he gives to all the players are extremely important, and the 38-year-old right-handed batter from Mumbai must captain the Men in Blue in the ODI World Cup 2027. 'You need to look at who can win you the World Cup. If Rohit's captaincy can do that, then he should continue till 2027. There is no one who can replace Rohit in ODIs; his captaincy, his batting & the confidence he gives to players are all extremely important – Rohit must be the captain in the 2027 World Cup," Rayudu said on Shubhankar Mishra's YouTube channel. The 2027 edition of the men's 50-over mega event will be played across multiple venues in South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe in October-November. A total of 14 teams will feature in the ODI World Cup in a couple of years' time. In the 2023 edition of the men's ODI World Cup, India finished as runners-up under Rohit Sharma's leadership. India won all nine league matches and the semifinal against New Zealand in Mumbai on November 15, 2023, to book a place in the summit clash, but in the title decider, they went down by six wickets against the Pat Cummins-led Australian team. In the 2023 ODI World Cup, Rohit scored a total of 597 runs to finish as the second-highest run getter. His batting average in the 2023 World Cup was 54.27, and he scored runs with a strike rate of 125.94. In the 2019 ODI World Cup, Rohit, with the help of five centuries and one fifty, scored 648 runs. But India failed to qualify for the final under Virat Kohli's leadership. In the 2015 World Cup as well, Rohit impressed with his batting, but India's campaign came to an end in the semifinal itself. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
