Sweet dog dragged from car in ‘horrific' abuse. Now fighter gets second chance

Miami Herald2 days ago

A sweetheart of a dog managed to survive a terrifying case of extreme neglect and is now on the mend, an animal shelter in Louisville says.
Iris was the victim of abuse that the Kentucky Humane Society said no dog ever should have to go through.
The Facebook post contains graphic images and details of animal neglect. The shelter would like readers to know that Iris is currently safe and in 'loving' hands.
'This is Iris. She arrived at our Sam Swope Pet Treatment and Lifesaving Center earlier this week, and our hearts have broken for her ever since,' the shelter said in the May 30 post.
'Her injuries are nothing short of horrific. Witnesses say they saw Iris being dragged from a car on a busy road on Monday. She was found by a riverbank near death, the skin on her feet and legs completely removed. Her stomach and chest are covered in awful road rash. Her injuries indicate that Iris attempted to stand up and stop herself from being pulled further down the road.'
Thanks to the witnesses, the shelter was able to get Iris the care she needed.
'Iris's abuse resulted in horrendous degloving injuries on all four legs. We immediately gave her strong pain medication and antibiotics in hopes of keeping her already critical condition from worsening, before tearfully cleaning her wounds,' the shelter said.
The shelter said Iris had muscles and tendons exposed, and her paw pads were 'torn off.' Shelter workers also covered her paws and legs to avoid infection.
'Though her healing will be touch-and-go for quite some time, Iris is now safe and comfortable, and that's what matters most,' the shelter said.
Despite the abuse, Iris hasn't lost her loving nature and understands that those around her are set on giving her the medical attention and the human warmness she deserves.
'What Iris endured is unbelievable. Somehow, despite it all, she's nothing but kind and trusting towards our staff as if she knows we're here to help,' the shelter noted.

Footage of plane wreckage falsely linked to India-Pakistan crisis

"Funeral of Indian fighter jet held in Pakistan. Pakistani people are putting out the fire with sand," reads the Bengali-language caption of a Facebook video posted on May 7, 2025. The video shows the burning wreckage of a crashed fighter jet, with some individuals speaking in Punjabi trying to put out the flames by throwing sand and dirt on it. It was shared as India and Pakistan engaged in four days of intense fighting in the worst violence between the nuclear-armed neighbours in decades. More than 70 people on both sides were killed in the jet fighter, missile, drone and heavy artillery attacks which came to a halt on May 10 after the announcement of a ceasefire (archived link). The conflict was sparked by an attack on tourists by gunmen in Indian-administered Kashmir on April 22 that New Delhi accused Islamabad of backing -- a charge Pakistan denies. The video was also shared alongside similar posts on Facebook and Instagram. The footage, however, does not show a crashed Indian jet during the latest conflict. A reverse image search on Google using keyframes from the falsely shared video led to the same footage posted on Instagram by online news outlet eTimes Pakistan on April 16 (archived link). "A Pakistan Air Force Jet has crashed near Vehari City," reads its caption, referring to a city in Pakistan's Punjab province. Pakistan news outlet Dawn used a still from the video in its report about the crash on April 16 (archived link). According to the Dawn report, the aircraft "was on a training flight but crashed due to some technical fault". AFP previously debunked similar posts that misrepresented visuals from the same crash here, and has debunked other false claims related to the latest India-Pakistan conflict here.

Thurston County Sheriff's Office to increase impaired driving enforcement this summer

Thurston County deputies will increase impaired driving enforcement during the summer after securing a state grant. The Thurston County Sheriff's Office is funding the additional patrols with a $50,000 grant from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission, the state's designated highway safety office. The Board of County Commissioners approved an interlocal agreement for the grant funding during its May 20 meeting. In a Monday Facebook post, Sheriff Derek Sanders said the money will help fund about 100 six-hour overtime shifts through the end of September. These shifts will be focused on weekends and other 'high risk days,' according to a news release. 'We are approaching the most deadly time of the year on our public roadways, with nearly half of our fatal crashes involving an impaired driver,' Sanders said in his post. 'If you're going to drink, make a plan ahead of time and save lives.' Earlier this year, the Sheriff's Office unsuccessfully applied for a grant to fund a full-time deputy who would be dedicated to impaired driving enforcement. 'Although we were not selected for that opportunity, we are grateful to have secured this critical summer funding, which will help us make a meaningful difference on our roadways,' the release says. The Sheriff's Office says impaired driving, or driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, continues to be one of the most 'preventable and devastating threats to public safety.' The release states Thurston County has seen an 'alarming rise in serious injury and fatal collisions involving impairment.' The Olympian has asked the Sheriff's Office to provide data to support this. Data from the WA Traffic Safety Commission indicates the number of impaired drivers involved in fatal crashes in Thurston County was 9 in 2020, 10 in 2021, 11 in 2022, 20 in 2023 and 18 in 2024. Over that same time period, impaired drivers ages 25-30 were involved in 15 fatal crashes, those 31-35 were involved in 9 crashes and those 36-40 were involved in 11 crashes. The data shows 76.5% of impaired drivers involved in fatal crashes were men. About half of these crashes were single-vehicle crashes and half were multi-vehicle crashes. The data indicates 27 such crashes occurred on county roads followed by 14 on city streets, 12 on interstate highways, 7 on state routes and 7 on U.S. highways. The WA Traffic Safety Commission does not have a data dashboard that shows the number of impaired drivers involved in non-fatal crashes. The Sheriff's Office says the new grant will allow it to take a proactive approach to protecting Thurston County residents and visitors. 'We remain committed to supporting the state's goal of reducing traffic-related fatalities and are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to making Washington's roads safer for everyone,' the release says.
