Ben Askren health update issued as UFC champion admits mistake
Ben Askren remains in hospital after former UFC champion Daniel Cormier backtracked on his claim the former fighter had been release
Ben Askren remains in hospital after ex-UFC champion Daniel Cormier backtracked on his claim the fighter had been released to his home.
Askren was rushed to hospital last weekend after taking ill with pneumonia and falling unconcious. With rumours swirling about his health, an incorrect report circulated on social media claiming Askren had died, which was swiftly debunked by fellow UFC icon Cormier, who gave the impression Askren was recuperating at home.
"Our good friend is having a hard time," Cormier commented. "The last time we did an episode [of their show], Ben was complaining about some issues, he had some infections, he had a really tough time. I want to report to you guys that he's now back home. He's with his family, his beautiful wife Amy and everyone is praying that Ben gets better and we can start moving forward together with life for ben. It's so sad and I don't know how things like this happen in life to people like Ben."

Despite these positive signs, Askren's wife told TMZ that her husband remains in a perilous state, affirming he is "definitely still fighting" for his life. And Cormier later took to social media to clarify his comments, saying: "He's back in Wisconsin in a hospital. He isn't home. Please keep praying for Ben. I should have been more clear."
David Potter, a former fighter, also addressed the rumours on social media by clarifying: "No. Our friend Ben Askren has not passed away. But the situation is still dire. Praying for him. A hero in the wrestling community, a MMA champion, and a one time boxer, which proved he would do anything, put himself in any situation to take care of his family and kids. Do the right thing and take care of them as well, protect his kids, do not share unconfirmed information.", reports the Mirror.
Askren's early career saw him dominating in promotions like Bellator and ONE FC before he finally made it into the prestigious ranks of the UFC in 2019. He began with a triumph over Robbie Lawler, only to face a spectacular defeat at the hands – or rather, knee – of Jorge Masvidal just five seconds into their match, marking one of the fastest knockouts in UFC history.
Despite that setback, Askren attempted to bounce back against the grappling expert Demian Maia. Unfortunately, he found himself on the losing end once again after being caught in a clinch that led to a submission. Following these battles in the MMA, Askren switched gears in 2021, entering the boxing ring to challenge Jake Paul. The result was another first-round finish for Askren, as the YouTube star-turned-boxer secured the win.
During Askren's time in hospital, his wife of 15 years took to social media to ask fans to keep the fighter in their thoughts and prayers. "Feeling so incredibly thankful for our friends and community. It's times like this that remind you how truly blessed you are," she wrote. I feel God moving through the love and support we have received. I'm sorry if I haven't had the chance to respond to you, but know I've seen your messages, and each one has meant so much to me. Please keep praying for Ben."

With Kieran Tierney returning to the Hoops, Taylor has chosen to move on. Greek side PAOK looked to be among the frontrunners for his signature. But media there claimed earlier this week that talks with the ex-Kilmarnock ace had frozen. That could now open the door for Copenhagen, who can also offer Taylor the prospect of a potential quickfire return to Champions League football. They regained the Superliga title after pipping Midtjylland to top spot by a single point and will now enter the competition in the second qualifying round. Their 37-year-old boss Jacob Hansen signed Peru international left-back Marcos Lopez on loan a year ago. There was an option to buy inserted in that deal which expires this month but there has been no announcement on his future as yet. They also have Norwegian cap Birger Meling, 30, on their books. But Copenhagen are far from the only side interested in Taylor, with two more English clubs also believed to be weighing up moves. Tyson Fury jokingly made offer to Wayne Rooney before Oleksandr Usyk fight
The former two-time boxing world champion will link up with Rooney on Sunday as the pair are set to co-manage England against the World XI at Soccer Aid 2025 Tyson Fury once jokingly asked former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney to spar with him prior to facing Oleksandr Usyk. The 36-year-old is no stranger when it comes inviting various big names to come and spar with him in his gym in Morecambe. However, even Rooney himself may have been a little shocked by the invitation. Fury's comments came after the ex-England striker praised the boxer after his win over Derek Chisora back in December 2022. "I think he's the best we've seen in a long time, and I don't think anyone will beat him,' Rooney told talkSPORT after the fight. 'I think he's an absolute legend for what he's done for boxing. He's entertaining, his skills are incredible, his mentality is incredible. If I'm being honest, I probably think he should be knighted because he hasn't been afraid to go abroad, he's won titles abroad, defended them abroad and he epitomises everything that boxing is.' Unsurprisingly, Rooney's comments quickly made their way to Fury - who was blown away by the support. So much so that he even invited the forward to train with him after jokingly admitting that he needed someone "smaller" to help prepare for the Ukrainian. ' Wayne Rooney is a proper legend, and I grew up watching him as a youngster for England and [Manchester] United. So, that's [an] amazing, amazing speech from him,' Fury told talkSPORT. 'He's a massive boxing fan, he comes from a boxing family as well. So, hopefully, we can have a little spar in the future sometime. I do need someone smaller to prepare for Usyk. Wayne, if you're listening, get on the blower, son!" He added: 'As daft and bizarre as this might sound to people, I'm really happy with who I am,' he added. 'I'm the people's champion. I don't really need some accolade, award, or promotion to let me know who I am, what I do, or who I am inside. I know that I don't really need a claim to say, 'Oh, he's a Sir or he's a whatever.' Fury had to wait nearly two years after the Chisora fight to get his Usyk wish. In 2023, the 'Gypsy King' famously went head-to-head with former UFC heavyweight champion, Francis Ngannou. Despite being dropped by the 'Predator,' Fury would go on to score a tight victory on points. The Brit first fought the Ukrainian last May. Despite having success towards the midway point, Usyk turned the tide in the second half of the contest and would go on to get the job done via split decision. The pair fought for a second time back in December - with Usyk picking up his second win against the Morecambe brawler - this time winning by unanimous decision. Just a few weeks on from the sequel, the 'Gypsy King' shocked the boxing world after announcing his retirement from the sport of boxing. On Sunday, both Fury and Rooney will team up as the pair will co-manage England at this year's Soccer Aid. Following the news that Fury would be involved in the match, he said: 'ENGLAND MANAGER! Who would ever have thought it!? I have had some big fights in my career and the prospect of leading my England team to victory this June fills me with just as much excitement as any heavyweight fight. "Everyone knows that I am a huge Manchester United fan too, so it's even more special for me that the game is at Old Trafford this year – and I get to manage one of my heroes, Wayne Rooney! How can we lose!? The work UNICEF does all around the world is so special and so important. I really hope that you can come along and support us this summer.'
