Deion Sanders Made Transfer Earn Number—and it Paid Off

Deion Sanders Made Transfer Earn Number—and it Paid Off originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Colorado head coach Deion Sanders offers something more foundational compared to other college coaches. An NFL-experienced staff and a culture built on competition. It's a big reason why everything at Colorado must be earned. When LaJohntay Wester wanted to get No. 1 last year, he earn it from Sanders, who doesn't give out his best jersey to anyone. Advertisement Sanders' message has been clear to all his players. Show up and be the best you can at all times. Tulsa transfer wide receiver Joseph Williams recently went on the record about being courted by Coach Prime while being committed to Utah. The 2024 AAC Freshman of the Year told the Reach The People Media's Darius Sanders there was another school willing to give him No. 8. But Coach Prime explained Williams it's that easy, it's not worth it. 'I'm not going to say the school, but a school made a phone call when I told them I wanted No. 8. He said, 'Yeah, reserve the number until I say otherwise,'' Williams said. 'But Coach Prime said I had to come in and earn it. That really got me. He's not going to give me what I want just because I want it. I have to earn everything. My jersey number, things I need, things I want.' Steelers Add Another Memphis Alum, Sign Ballhawking Safety

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers have agreed to signed safety Quindell Johnson, per his agency, Universal Sports Management. Johnson is a 6-foot, 208-pound safety out of Memphis in his third professional season. He was most recently with the San Francisco 49ers, but was waived on May 13. Advertisement The 25-year-old former undrafted free agent first joined the Los Angeles Rams in 2023, but was released during final roster cuts. He was claimed off waivers by the Chicago Bears and played nine games during his rookie season in Chicago. He played 35 snaps of defense, playing both in the box and as a free safety. He also played 106 snaps of defense. In total, Johnson recorded three tackles and intercepted Blaine Gabbert in a game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Last summer, Johnson was again waived coming out of training camp. He spent the entire 2024 season on the Los Angeles Rams practice squad, but did not appear in a game. He was released by the Rams on Jan. 7 and signed with the 49ers on Jan. 21 before being cut after the draft. Quindell Johnson, Memphis Athletics A New Orleans native, Johnson joined Memphis in 2018 and spent five seasons with the Tigers. He redshirted as a true freshman and started four games in 2019 before becoming a three-year starter. Cornerback Brandin Echols is also a Memphis native. The Steelers do not currently have an open roster spot, though they will be able to place tight end Donald Parham on injured reserve after his season-ending injury on Tuesday. Indiana Pacers' team flight to NBA Finals takes a detour due to tornado warning in Oklahoma City

The Indiana Pacers' journey to the NBA Finals was never going to be easy, but it got a little more complicated, and it had nothing to do with basketball. The team's flight bound for Oklahoma City for a Game 1 tilt with the Thunder was detoured by literal thunder and forced to land in Tulsa, Oklahoma, due to a tornado warning in the capital Tuesday afternoon. 'The Pacers team plane circled due to the weather in Oklahoma City and subsequently landed in Tulsa to re-fuel,' a representative for the team said. The Pacers have since told CNN that the team jet has departed Tulsa to complete its journey to Oklahoma City. 'We're appreciative of the efforts made by the Delta pilots and crew, and hope everyone in Oklahoma City and the surrounding affected areas remained safe,' the team said in its updated statement. CNN has reached out to the NBA for comment on the situation. The Pacers are playing for a championship for the first time since 2000, when the team lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in the franchise's one and only NBA Finals appearance. The Pacers' path to the Finals included victories over the Milwaukee Bucks, the top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers, and a six-game defeat of the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals. The Thunder meanwhile are appearing in their first NBA Finals since 2012, where they lost to the Miami Heat. The franchise's only NBA championship came in 1979, when the team was known as the Seattle SuperSonics. The Western Conference's No. 1 seed, the Thunder, advanced to the Finals with a sweep against the Memphis Grizzlies, a seven-game epic against the Denver Nuggets, and most recently a five-game win over the Minnesota Timberwolves. The best-of-seven NBA Finals begins with Game 1 Thursday night in Oklahoma City. CNN's Angela Fritz contributed to this report
