A priest who has medaled in international jiu-jitsu competitions is under investigation for assaulting a 62-year-old woman during an alleged exorcism, authorities in the Brazilian state of São Paulo said.
Father João Bezerra was conducting a mass last Thursday at the Nossa Senhora Consolata Parish in São Manuel when he revealed before the parishioners that he was an 'exorcist.'
Bezerra – the first black belt priest in Brazil – was walking the around the church while performing the Blessed Sacrament when he approached the woman, whose name has not been released.
The police report indicated that woman was lying on the floor and claimed that she 'rested in the Holy Spirit.'
She subsequently 'began to manifest an evil spirit, becoming unconscious' when Bezerra assaulted her.
The priest slapped, kicked and grabbed the woman by the hair until he pushed her into a pew.
The woman was briefly unconscious and pleaded with Bezerra to stop as the faithful intervened.
Bezerra abandoned the church without explaining himself to the woman or the parishioners.
The woman was taken to Santa Casa de São Manuel Hospital, where she received treatment for bruises to the face, scalp and right shoulder.
The Archdiocese of Botacu told Brazilian news outlet G1 that it is covering the woman's medical expenses.
It also said that it 'has instituted an internal procedure for rigorous investigation of the facts, provisionally removing Father João José Bezerra from the use of order.'
One of the woman's two sisters who attended the service told TV Tem that they did not think that Bezerra was capable of physically harming any of the parishioners.
'We never imagined it, we didn't expect it at all, we were all in shock,' she said.
'I too, at the time, was in church serving Jesus, but we never imagined a priest would do something like that, that this would happen. We were all in shock, paralyzed, without any reaction.'
The victim's other sister said she has had a difficult time forgetting Bezerra's assault.
'My sister, who is 62 years old, is a super Catholic person, who everyone here in São Manuel knows,' she said.
'My sister, who is 62 years old, is a super Catholic person, who everyone here in São Manuel knows,' she said. 'I just hope for justice in reality, because, if this priest was not able to celebrate a mass like that, he could not have done it.'

Chilling footage of the horrific moment five hooded thugs hammered, stabbed and shot a man - as new details are revealed about exactly WHAT the savages were hunting

Confronting footage has emerged of the terrifying moment five masked intruders held a grandmother at gunpoint before launching a brutal assault on her cousin. Birsel Akbulut, 57, and her cousin Kemal Akbulut, 60, were sleeping inside their Gladstone Park home in Melbourne just before 1.30am on July 24 when the men armed with a hammer, a knife and a firearm stormed inside. Mr Akbalut confronted the intruders in the kitchen before they placed a firearm in his mouth and made demands for cash. Graphic CCTV footage from inside the home depicted the hooded intruders repeatedly beating and stabbing Mr Akbalut as he pleaded with them to stop. 'This is what happens when you f*** with us,' one intruder could be heard yelling as the other men took turns attacking the bloodied man. 'Please, I can't take any more. Take whatever you want,' he pleaded after the men demanded he hand over his wallet. Mr Akbalut was forced to sit up from the ground as one man demanded the passcode to his mobile phone. 'F*** the phone,' one intruder demanded, attempting to pull away his accomplice as he struggled to unlock the device. Ms Akbulut, who was also threatened with a gun, claimed that intruders were looking for her daughter's partner, Ibrahim Al-Sayah, who doesn't live at the home. Al-Sayah previously pleaded guilty over his role in a drive-by shooting at a Melbourne bakery in July 2020 where he acted as the getaway driver. Ms Akbulut described Al-Sayah as a 'piece of s***' in an explosive interview with Seven News following the home invasion. 'He likes acting like a gangster. This is not a movie, lad. It's not a f***ing movie,' she said, before adding that her 22-year-old daughter has since gone into hiding. 'I'm just waiting for the police to knock (on) the door and say to me: "Your daughter's shot" or "your daughter's been killed",' she said. Ms Akbalut, who was nursing a swollen, bruised face during the interview, called on the state government to crack down on violent crime. 'Enough is enough,' she yelled, adding: 'You always say you're going to do something about it... do something about it.' The offenders fled the Gladstone Park home in a white Haval SUV. Three weeks on, the police manhunt for the intruders continues. No arrests or charges have yet been laid. 'The investigation remains ongoing,' a Victoria Police spokeswoman told Daily Mail on Friday.

Woman charged with assaulting security guard at hotel housing migrants - after resident 'walked into her flat'

A woman has been charged with assaulting a security guard at a hotel housing migrants - after one of its residents allegedly walked into her flat. The migrant, who is in his early 20s, has also been arrested on suspicion of assault following Wednesday's alleged incident at the Britannia Hotel in central London's Canary Wharf. Footage had circulated of a man entering a house after being told "to go back to the hotel" - and he was later detained by members of the public. It is understood he had been staying at the Britannia Hotel at the time, but no longer resides there. Channay Augustus has been charged with possession of an offensive weapon, affray, assault on an emergency worker, common assault and possession of cannabis. The 22-year-old is an occupant of the flat that had been entered. According to the Metropolitan Police, the affray and common assault charges relate to an altercation at the hotel on Wednesday evening. Protests have been held outside that hotel in recent weeks, and the alleged victim of the common assault works there as a security guard. Augustus will appear at Thames Magistrates' Court on Friday. Officers arrested the migrant in the Hackney area on suspicion of common assault in the early hours of this morning. He remains in police custody.
