The big picture: DWR has been breeding peregrine falcons in downtown Richmond for 25 years, and since 2017, they've run the Richmond Falcon Cam livestream of the nest, which sits atop Riverfront Plaza.
This year, DWR is partnering with folks from Richmond's own Triple Crossing Beer brewing — who happen to be big Falcon Cam fans — for the raffle.
Triple Crossing's flagship IPA is also called... Falcon Smash.
Plus: Spring is prime hatching time, Three of four chicks this year have hatched as of press time.
How it works: The raffle will allow three winners to join biologists on Banding Day, when they give each chick an ID band about 30 days after hatching.

A new measurement system has been introduced to the NFL, and fans got their first glimpse of it during Thursday's preseason game between the Detroit Lions and the Los Angeles Chargers. The NFL's virtual measurement system debuted during the first half of the Hall of Fame Game after a 10-yard run by Lions running back Craig Reynolds. Rather than having the chain gang run out to the field, the officials simply waited for the virtual measurement system to calculate whether the veteran running back had made the line to gain. Below is a look at how the process played out: The virtual measurement was handled efficiently and didn't disrupt the flow of the game. That left several prominent NFL voices impressed with the process and optimistic it will serve as a quality replacement for the chain gang, which remains on the sideline in case of an emergency. However, a smaller cohort was reluctant to trust the new protocol. Others joked the process would be less aesthetically appealing than watching the chain gang determine whether a player generated a first down. As long as the NFL's virtual measurement process remains efficient, the league will probably not have too many regrets about switching to it as the primary method for measuring first downs. Petition calls for tougher action on pavement parking in Bradford
A PETITION has called for tougher action to stop cars parking on Bradford's pavements, and says the issue is 'a major concern on every local street". The e-petition says pavement parking can block people in their homes and force wheelchair users and parents with prams onto the road to try and navigate the obstructions. It is currently live on Bradford Council's website and runs until late November. Pavement parking is a hugely contentious issue in the district, with rows of cars parked outside shops and takeaways a common sight on some streets. Although the Highway Code says vehicles should not park on the pavement, it is not illegal, except in London and Scotland. The Department of Transport held a national consultation on the issue more than five years ago, leading to over 15,000 responses. However, there has yet to be any change to legislation following the consultation. The new petition calls for the Council to bring new local laws in relation to on-street footpath parking and for more frequent Council checks to stop car owners/drivers from parking in a way that causes obstructions to pavements. The petition adds: 'This is a major concern on every local street of Bradford.' It goes on to say that many cars in Bradford 'casually' park on pavements when there is no immediate street parking space. It adds: 'Such nuisance and obstructive parking needs council attention and action for prevention. 'On-street footpath parking causes high risk and hazards for those who also need to get in and out of their gardens and onto a public footpath. 'Lack of space for wheelchairs, prams, pushchairs, and parents with toddlers to walk on footpaths mean they have to go onto roads with cars passing just to get past. 'This causes high risk danger for accident and hazards.' There should be daily parking checks in hot spot areas and new parking regulations introduced – the petition adds. So far, 25 people have signed the petition, which can be found here. If enough people sign the petition, it will be heard at a future meeting of Bradford Council. The issue was discussed at a Bradford Council meeting last year, when Councillor Alex Ross Shaw, executive for regeneration, planning and transport, said pavement parking was 'one of the most frustrating issues to deal with.' But he added: 'We need to differentiate between a careless driver who parks their car entirely on the pavement rather than park 10 yards down the road, and people who live in an area where they have to park partly on the pavement to avoid collisions, and leaves plenty of space for pedestrians.'

China's manufacturing activity shrinks as exports drag, S&P PMI shows
BEIJING (Reuters) -China's factory activity deteriorated in July, as a softening of new business growth led manufacturers to scale back production, a private-sector survey showed on Friday. The S&P Global China General Manufacturing PMI fell to 49.5 in July from 50.4 in June, undershooting analysts' expectations of 50.4 in a Reuters poll. The 50-mark separates growth from contraction. The reading, combined with Thursday's official survey, bodes ill for growth momentum at the start of the third quarter, following robust growth in the first half of the year. Amid a trade truce with Washington, economists say the support of exports front-loading ahead of higher U.S. tariffs to the world's second-biggest economy may fade over the remainder of the year. According to the S&P Global survey, new export orders contracted for a fourth straight month and at a faster pace than in June. After rising in June, manufacturing output declined in July. Firms looked to utilise their current stock holdings for the fulfilment of orders, which contributed to a second successive monthly decline in post-production inventories. Falling production together with a stable backlog prompted factory owners to lower their headcount in July. Firms also said cost concerns had underpinned decisions to shed staff. However, business sentiment improved at the start of the second half of 2025 but was still below the series average. Manufacturers expected better economic conditions and promotional efforts to spur sales in the year ahead. As Beijing started to tackle "price wars" among manufacturers, average input prices increased for the first time in five months. Firms nevertheless lowered their selling prices again as competition for new business intensified. But export charges increased at the fastest pace in a year due to rising shipping and logistics costs. Top leaders on Wednesday pledged to support an economy that is facing various risks, by managing what is viewed as disorderly competition in the second half of the year. Markets expected that Beijing may be about to start a new round of factory capacity cuts in a long-awaited but challenging campaign against deflation.
