Waterworld where four-year-old girl died 'had strongest wave pool I've felt', says mother who was there on tragic day

Daily Mail2 days ago
The waterpark where a four-year-old girl died had the 'strongest wave pool' swimmers had ever felt, according to a mother there on the day.
Staffordshire Police were called to Waterworld in Stoke-on-Trent on Monday to reports of a girl in a critical condition.
The child was rushed to hospital for further treatment but sadly passed away a short while later.
Parents of children who had been at the 'lagoon area of the aqua park' where the tragic event took place have since spoken out, sharing their 'heartbreak'.
A mother, who took her three children to the waterpark that day told the Telegraph she had never been to one with such a strong wave pool.
The parent, who did not wish to be named, had attended with her husband and three children, aged 11, five and three.
She described 'struggling to remain' on her feet due to the 'strength' of the current, adding she had used wave pools before but 'never experienced one that forceful'.
'As an adult, I did not feel confident keeping my younger children safe there, and made the decision to remove them. My husband remained with our 11-year-old, who is a strong swimmer, but even he was struggling to stay above water.
'Although lifeguards were positioned at key points, I found it very difficult to maintain visibility of my children in the children's area,' she added.
The mother went on to say there had been a 'number of slides and structures' blocking sight lines and that she lost sight of her five-year-old 'several times' while managing her 'three-year-old'.
She said her daughter had wandered towards the wave pool on more than one occasion and she had to remind her not to enter the water alone and to stay near the orange and green slides and wait if she could not see her.
Another woman described the moment she saw the little girl on the floor and recalled having to leave as her own girl did not want to see it and as her children were 'afraid'.
And a different local said the venue had been 'crowded' on the day, adding she thought there were 'not enough lifeguards'.
The attendee said they were not sure exactly what had happened but was aware of wave machines that are 'quite choppy' and the need to be a 'strong swimmer'.
They added it was a 'complete tragedy'.
Another resident said it was 'heartbreaking' while customer Heather Neville, 33, of Stone, Staffordshire, described finding the site closed following the girl's death after she arrived with her two sons.
She said it was 'absolutely dreadful' and said she was unsure as to whether she could bring her boys back when the waterpark reopens.
The typhoon lagoon wave pool is indicated on a map of the water park - where artificial waves reach heights of 1.4 metres.
Toddlers are permitted to go in but only 'strong swimmers' can use the deep end. Non-swimmers are instructed to remain in shallow water, according the company's website.
A Waterworld spokesman said: 'It is with great sadness that we learned of this little girl's passing. All our thoughts are with her family and loved ones during these extremely difficult times. Waterworld is working closely with the authorities.
'All other visitors were asked to quietly leave the pool out of respect for the rescue operation under way, and we would like to thank them for their support and collaboration.'
West Midlands Ambulance Service stated it received a number of 999 calls to 'Waterworld at 4.20pm on Monday.
Two ambulances, a paramedic officer and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford attended the scene.
A spokesman for the service said: 'Crews arrived to find Waterworld staff and bystanders performing CPR on a girl who was in a critical condition.
'The ambulance team quickly took over resuscitation efforts to commence advanced life support before conveying the girl by air ambulance to Royal Stoke University Hospital whilst life-saving treatment continued en route.
'Tragically, despite the best efforts of everyone, nothing could be done to save the little girl, and she was confirmed deceased in hospital a short time later.
'Our thoughts are with the family and friends at this truly awful time.'
Stoke-on-Trent city council said in a statement on Tuesday: 'The council's environmental health team are working with the police and the privately run venue to undertake a full health and safety investigation.'
Steve Watkins, the Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent, said: 'This is a terrible tragedy, and our thoughts are with her family and loved ones.'

Influencer wife ‘defends husband' who hurled horrific abuse at Virgin Atlantic stewardess he threatened to ‘gang rape'

ONE of the wives of a business tycoon who threatened to gang rape an air hostess during a flight has appeared to defend her partner online. Disturbing footage captured the moment Salman Iftikhar, 37, told Virgin Atlantic crew member Angie Walsh she would be attacked in her hotel after landing. 9 9 9 Iftikhar later threatened to blow up the five-star hotel where the cabin crew were set to stay. He was finally caged for 15 months at Isleworth Crown Court on Tuesday after admitting making threats to kill and racially aggravated harassment. One of Iftikhar's two wives has now posted a cryptic message appearing to defend her disgraced husband. Supermodel and actress, Abeer Rizvi, 37, begged people to "be human" and understand the pain behind every person's story. Rizvi said on Instagram: "Mental health is not a joke. Behind every story there is pain you don't see. "Before judging, try understanding. Be kind. Be human." social media where she often shares clips of her husband. But Iftikhar lives in the UK with another woman who is also the mother to his children. Iftikhar, Erum Salman, 38, and their three children all live in a £2million six-bedroom home in Buckinghamshire. The couple run a London-based staffing company that provides training to businesses working in customer service and manufacturing. Salman and the children were all forced to watch on in horror during the flight from hell. Iftikhar's vile rant was spouted on an eight-hour flight from London Heathrow to Lahore, Pakistan, on February 7 2023. Prosecutor Abdul Kapadia said Iftikhar was drinking champagne at the onboard bar and leant over to get his own ice. He said: "When told to stop, the defendant became irate, and started to film cabin crew with his phone, telling them: 'Do not tell me what to do you b***h. "When asked by the cabin crew to return to his seat, he then said: 'Don't tell me what to do you racist f***ing b***h. I know where you are from in Cardiff." He continued to call Ms Walsh a "f***ing b***h" before his escalating behaviour sparked a possible flight diversion to Turkey. Mr Kapadia added: "His wife was ashamed. His three children were also on-board, and other crew members were called to assist, but the defendant continued shouting and swearing. "He was slurring his words, with his voice raised." 9 9 9 The out-of-control passenger then told cabin crew he would blow up the floor of their hotel. No action was taken against Iftikhar when he stepped off the aircraft in Pakistan. He was only arrested at his expensive detached home in Iver after his holiday. The judge also took into account Iftikhar's six previous convictions, including a common assault - a record she described as "lengthy and appalling". Iftikhar was living a life of luxury before his jail stint. He boasts a range of expensive cars on his driveway in Buckinghamshire including a Range Rover, Bentley and Rolls-Royce. In one photo, he is seen posing in front of a royal blue Rolls-Royce kitted out with a white leather interior. Other extravagant snaps show a number of his pricey motors parked outside the home of the Buckinghamshire property. A neighbour of Iftikhar, who asked that their identity remain anonymous, told the Daily Mail: "He's definitely very flash, someone who likes to flaunt his wealth. "How he made his money is beyond me, he ran a recruitment consultancy but I didn't really tend to see him leave for work. He was around the house most of the time. Angie Walsh's gut-wrenching impact statement IN an impact statement, Angie Walsh said she was forced to take off 14 months and the altercation "changed my life enormously". "I can't quite believe that one passenger has had this much of an impact on my, my job, my career and my life," she said. "I am a strong brave, happy stewardess, and loved my job. I am well known within the company. "But I had to take 14 months off work. "I have been flying with Virgin Atlantic for 37 years. I was working when all flights were grounded on 9/11, and I've even flown into a warzone. But this incident has broken me. "But I don't feel strong enough anymore. I was abused for eight hours and 15 mins. It has broken me. It was a very personal attack. "I was doing everything in my power to protect passengers and the crew from him. I felt exposed and vulnerable, especially as we were 39,000 feet in the air. There was nowhere for me to go. "There was one moment where I felt I could not cope. I went into the cockpit and had a meltdown. I said to the captain I don't know what to do. "I was traumatised by the threat of being gang raped. Never in my entire career flying for 37 years have I not been sure what to do. "I have had the best career in the world for 37 years. But he has taken that away from me." "One thing he did like was cars. He owned a Bentley and Range Rover, but he'd also drive different cars on a temporary basis - usually expensive looking ones." The neighbour added that Iftikhar would sometimes come back in the night "revving the engine of his car and blaring music" after going out. Another local said: "He'd usually tear down this road in a Range Rover or some other powerful car. He was a bit of a poser when it came to cars and his house." Despite his apparent wealth, a failed business venture left the recruitment boss millions of pounds in debt. The business mogul previously owned an aviation recruitment business, however it went into administration owing more than £11million to HMRC and £6.885million to HSBC. 9 9

Southport window cleaner who was hailed a hero after he rushed to help injured stabbing victims appears in court for assaulting his pregnant girlfriend

A window cleaner who was hailed a hero after he rushed to save children in the Southport knife attack has appeared in court for assaulting his pregnant partner. Joel Verite, 26, was on his lunch break when he rushed to the attack at the Taylor Swift-themed dance and came face-to-face with evil killer Axel Rudakubana. Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, Bebe King, six, and Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, were killed in the brutal slayings with eight other children and two adults also injured. The fitness trainer, 27, who is believed to have been suffering from PTSD following the attack, assaulted his girlfriend in front of his baby, Liverpool Crown Court heard today. Sarah McInerney, representing the Crown Prosecution Service, told the court that Verite had been in an 'on-off' relationship with Freya Aughton-Rimmer for around a year. On October 18, they had an argument after Verite had been cropped out of an image, where he then followed the victim into the kitchen. While Ms Aughton-Rimmer fed her first-born child Weetabix, the 27-year-old asked if she was in a mood, the court heard. The defendant then began to shout and swear, before hitting the bowl out of the victim's hands, with the contents spilling 'up the wall', Ms McInerney said. Ms Aughton-Rimmer requested he leave the property, however Verite followed her, asking if he could see his child. When he was told no, he carried on following the victim upstairs, where he pushed her in the back and she fell. Following the incident, Ms Aughton-Rimmer fled upstairs and called the window cleaner's mother to come and get him. The judge told Verite: 'I would have thought going through the dreadful experiences you had would make you less likely to use violence.' Verite admitted to common assault and criminal damage but denied assault by beating, the Liverpool Echo reported. At trial, the crown accepted Verite's actions were reckless and he did not intend to harm the victim. Ms McInerney told the court the offences were aggravated by the fact it occurred in the presence of a child, in a domestic context and that the victim was pregnant. Verite, received an 18 months suspended sentence for criminal damage, common assault and two counts of assault by beating. He was also ordered to pay £504 in court costs as well as to carry out 25 days of rehabilitation and 180 hours of unpaid work.

The family of a one-year-old girl who died on the Isle of Wight have paid a heartbreaking tribute to her. Jayla-Jean Mclaren was taken to hospital on August 1 after being found with serious injuries - but she died on Sunday, according to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary. In a statement published by the force today, her family said: 'Mummy, daddy, and nanny will always love you. Fly high princess.' A 31-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman, both from Newport in South Wales, were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. They have since been released on conditional bail pending further inquiries until November 1, police said. 'We know emotions are understandably high in the local community following news of this devastating incident,' Detective Superintendent Rod Kenny said. 'First and foremost, our thoughts remain with all who knew and loved Jayla-Jean. 'I want to reassure the community that our investigation remains ongoing, and we are working tirelessly to establish the full facts surrounding Jayla-Jean's death.' He added: 'While we understand the community concern, we urge people not to speculate on the circumstances as this will cause further distress to those who knew Jayla-Jean and could impede the ongoing police investigation. 'We will provide further updates as soon as we are able to.'
