HIGH POINT — The N.C. Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry program has announced that 69 communities, including High Point and Jamestown, have been awarded 2024 Tree City USA designations.
High Point University also was among 12 North Carolina colleges that earned 2024 Tree Campus Higher Education honors.
Tree City USA is a national program that provides the framework for community forestry management for cities and towns. By meeting four core standards of sound urban forestry management, communities can achieve Tree City USA status, N.C. Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler said.
'Planting trees and responsible urban forest management at the local level, including community involvement and participation in urban forestry recognition programs, are critical to sustaining healthy forest resources in North Carolina,' he said.
Greensboro also earned Tree City USA honors, and UNC Greensboro earned Tree Campus Higher Education honors.

Spartanburgers fall in Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Yeison Morrobel gave the Spartanburgers a one-run lead in the sixth inning of Tuesday's series opener between Hub City (27-25) and the Greensboro Grasshoppers (35-16). After five strong innings from Spartanburgers starter Leandro Lopez (L, 2-4), Greensboro responded with a home run as part of a four-run sixth of their own. That was all the scoring in the contest; the Grasshoppers claimed game one by three. The Spartanburgers threatened starter Carlos Jimenez in the first. A walk followed by a Keith Jones II double had two runners in scoring position, but Hub City failed to capitalize. Jimenez struck out the side in order in the second to finish his day. Lopez got off to a great start on the mound for the 'Burgers. After a four-pitch walk to begin the first, Lopez retired the next eight batters he faced, including a double play to face the minimum through three innings. Lopez ran into some trouble after the first two reached in the fourth on a walk and a single. Another double play helped Lopez keep the contest scoreless. The Spartanburgers stranded five runners in scoring position through the first five innings. Against Hunter Furtado (W, 4-0) in the sixth, Hub City changed its fortunes. After a one-out walk to Jones, he stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. With two outs, Morrobel yanked an RBI single through the right side to give the Spartanburgers their first win. Lopez allowed the first two batters for Greensboro to reach again in the bottom of the sixth. A walk and double had two runners in scoring position. The Spartanburgers got the first out on a fielder's choice at the plate that erased Justin Miknis, the lead runner. Duce Gourson followed up with an opposite-field home run that ended the day for Lopez. Anthony Susac entered and gave up one more run on a Javier Rivas double and Omar Alfonzo single. Susac and Victor Simeon tossed scoreless frames respectively in the seventh and eighth. The 'Burgers bats could not heat up in the final three frames. Despite three walks in that span, Hub City could not manage a hit. Former MLB reliever Beau Burrows (S, 1) tallied the final three outs with a pair of strikeouts. Greensboro and Hub City return early to the ballpark tomorrow. The Spartanburgers send RHP Aidan Curry (1-1, 6.31 ERA) to face off against RHP Antwone Kelly (1-0, 3.66 ERA) for the Grasshoppers. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. ET. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Children's Home Society of North Carolina Celebrates Family Reunification Month and the Power of Second Chances

Greensboro, North Carolina, June 02, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- This June, Children's Home Society of North Carolina (CHS) proudly joins organizations nationwide in celebrating National Reunification Month, a time to honor the dedication of families who work to overcome challenges and reunite with their children, and the professionals and caregivers who support them on that journey. Reunification is the process of safely returning a child in foster care to their biological family; it is the most common and preferred outcome in child welfare. It supports the belief that, with the right support and services, families can heal, grow, and stay together. In 2022, nearly 46% of children who exited foster care were reunified with a parent or primary caregiver, according to federal data. 'Reunification is a powerful and courageous journey,' said Rebecca Starnes, Chief Program Officer at CHS. 'Families face real hardships such as poverty, mental health struggles, substance use, or lack of community support; however, they also possess incredible resilience. When we provide the tools and relationships needed for stability, children can often return home to parents who are ready and able to care for them.' Youth who have been removed from their homes and placed in foster care need positive relationships and connections with their parents and other family members to maintain the integrity of these bonds. The goal is that they will be able to return home. Foster parents play a critical role in cultivating these relationships by supporting child and parent contact and visitation, which significantly increases the likelihood of successful reunification. At CHS, reunification is more than a goal; it's a core value embedded in every step of our services. Through trauma-informed care, family preservation programs, intensive case management, and wraparound support, CHS works alongside families to help them develop the skills and stability needed to provide a safe, permanent home. An essential part of CHS's reunification support is the Success Coach Program, a voluntary service available to families after reunification has occurred. CHS is the chosen Success Coach provider in 71 of 100 counties in North Carolina. Through regular in-home visits and personalized guidance, Success Coaches help families strengthen communication, build resilience, and develop tools for long-term stability. This ongoing support ensures that reunified families are not only brought back together but are equipped to thrive together. By offering coaching for up to two years, the program helps prevent future crises and reinforces CHS's commitment to lasting, safe permanency. National Reunification Month is a time to acknowledge the hard work of families and the vital role of foster parents, social workers, and community partners in restoring families and futures. CHS especially celebrates its more than 500 licensed CHS foster parents who support reunification every day. 'Keeping families together whenever it's safe to do so is the best possible outcome for children,' said Starnes. 'It allows them to maintain their identity, their connections, and their sense of belonging, and that's what every child deserves.' 2 injured in crash involving light pole on Battleground Avenue in Greensboro, EMS says

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — Two people were injured in a crash involving a light pole early Saturday morning, according to Guilford County EMS. At 3:24 a.m., all lanes of Battleground Avenue between Grecade Street and West Wendover Avenue were closed due to the crash and following investigation. According to a Duke Energy employee, a driver struck a light pole, causing the power line and attached traffic lights to collapse. One of the traffic lights appears to be destroyed. According to EMS, one person in the crash suffered minor injuries, and another suffered 'serious injuries but not specifically life-threatening.' As of 11 a.m., Duke Energy crews have left the scene, and the City of Greensboro is using wire cutters to manage the damaged transformer and handling cleanup efforts. This is a developing story.
