Friend who found drag artist dead gets apology from Met Police
The Metropolitan Police force has apologised over its investigation into the death of an American drag artist in April 2023.Steven Grygelko, who performed under the name Heklina, was found dead at a flat in Soho, central London by his friend Joshua Grannell.Mr Grannell said he was "furious" it had taken almost two years for police to make a public appeal to find three men, who detectives say were at the flat hours before Mr Grygelko was discovered.In March 2023, a review by Baroness Casey into the force found institutional homophobia, racism and misogyny.
Mr Grygelko, 55, and Mr Grannell had been staying in London preparing to put on a performance of their drag parody show Mommie Queerest at Soho Theatre.Detectives released CCTV footage last month of three men who may have "vital information" about what happened.Mr Grannell criticised the police for failing to keep him and Mr Grygelko's next of kin informed over the investigation."When I left London they had assigned me with a family liaison officer."They convinced me that we would be updated weekly, that we would be included in the process, that we would be informed of anything."I got on that plane, and every email went unanswered for months and months. "They just completely ignored us."Mr Grannell said they had still had not been officially told the cause of Mr Grygelko's death, which is being treated as unexpected, and accused the Met of dismissing him and his friend as "trash"."I hate being the person who incorrectly would cry homophobia, if it's not homophobia. But they have left me no choice."
Mr Grannell found his friend's body when he returned to their flat one morning and told officers he was "certain" that someone else had been there before he arrived."The door was not only not locked, but it wasn't shut all the way. "I went to put my key in, and the door just opened."A Met spokesperson said "a number of enquiries" had been pursued before issuing the CCTV appeal.Det Ch Supt Christina Jessah said the force appreciated Mr Grygelko's next of kin "had been frustrated by the pace of the investigation" and lack of updates.She added: "We apologise and will be taking steps to correct this."She said officers were also continuing to speak to London's LGBT+ community to address wider safety concerns.
The Met has been trying to improve confidence in policing following a number of scandals, including failures in the investigation into the serial killer Stephen Port.A number of reforms have since been made, including introducing new community liaison officers, but according to research published by the mayor's office for policing and crime, only 55% of LGBT+ respondents said that they trusted the Met, compared to 73% of those who did not identify as LGBT+.Mr Grannell, who performs as Peaches Christ, described his friend as a "trailblazer" who had opened the doors for many other drag artists."Heklina was maybe one of the funniest people I've ever met. She was dark and hilarious and what she didn't want the world to know was that she was secretly kind. "Quietly behind the scenes, she was constantly helping people out. But the deal was you couldn't tell people."He said he had been constantly questioning what had happened to his friend."The most nightmarish life-changing experience of my life has only been made infinitely worse by the Met Police."

Hidden gem documentary that inspired 90s comedy legend free to watch on BBC iPla
BBC iPlayer is secretly home to one of the most influential documentary films of the 1990s – and barely anybody in Britain knows it's there. Three Salons At the Seaside – directed by Philippa Lowthorpe – was first aired in 1994 and, over 40 minutes, followed the story of three real hair salons in Blackpool. Focusing on the staff and customers at Vanity Box, Tricia's Hair Salon, and Mary's Way, Three Salons At the Seaside has been retrospectively celebrated as a touching time capsule of 20th century Britain. The documentary was thought to be lost to history, only surviving in bits and pieces on YouTube, but the BBC uploaded the entire thing to iPlayer in 2022. Renewed interest in the documentary film inspired a 2022 American parody called Two Hairdressers in Bagglyport, which starred none other than Hollywood actress Cate Blanchett. But most importantly, its resurrection encouraged Stockport-born comedy writer Craig Cash – of The Royle Family, Early Doors, and Gogglebox – to reveal that his writing partner Caroline Aherne had been a huge fan. Together, Craig and Aherne – who died of lung cancer in 2016 – co-wrote The Royle Family, which ran for three seasons and numerous specials between 1998 and 2012. Set in Manchester, The Royle Family was situated inside the home of the titular TV-obsessives, who were played by Ricky Tomlinson, Ralf Little, Liz Smith, and Sue Johnston, alongside on-screen couple Craig and Aherne. It won several awards during its run and is often celebrated as one of the best British sitcoms of its time – it drew in 10 million viewers at its peak in 1999. Speaking to the Radio Times in 2023, Craig said: 'We took inspiration from real life and our families. We watched the documentary about hairdressers, Three Salons at the Seaside, which we thought was hilarious. 'Sometimes people get bogged down in plot and narrative at the expense of character and dialogue. For us it was all about the pauses, how people really are.' In particular, viewers have noticed that Hilary – a hair stylist and administrator working at Vanity Box – bears a striking resemblance in appearance and personality to one of Aherne's characters, Mrs. Merton. The Mrs Merton Show ran between 1993 and 1998 on the BBC, and some estimations put the average viewing figures at somewhere between seven and eight million. On Facebook, Paul Davies thought aloud: 'I wonder if Caroline Aherne took a little bit of the spirit of these wonderful ladies for her Mrs Merton character.' Many fans of the documentary cite its peaceful atmosphere and honest portrayal of northern working class life as reasons for repeatedly watching it year after year. Others have cited that it reminds them very precisely of the world before reality TV and social media, and even in the days before widespread internet usage and Sky TV. Karen O'Mahoney said on Facebook: 'There's something so heartwarming about [Three Salons At the Seaside]. Hard to believe it's only 30 years ago, feels like another age.' A scene which has stuck with viewers focused on a 'funeral bag' that Vanity Box handed out to its customers whenever they were having their hair done in order to say goodbye to a friend or relative. The women in the salon would be given the funeral bag by Hilary upon their arrival at the salon – the clutch bag contained a small amount of money and a complementary mint. Fiona Botham commented: 'I love the kindness of the funeral bag with a bit of money and a mint. The hairdresser owner seems such a lovely woman.' In 2022, Three Salons At the Seaside was officially named by the Grierson Trust charity as one of the finest British documentaries made in the last 50 years. More Trending As for the status of each of the three salons – Mary's Way closed down some time between 2008 and 2012 according to Google Maps, while the shop unit that used to be home to Tricia's was renovated for housing in 2016. However, the Vanity Box is still going strong, with Google reviews from as recently as nine months ago still thanking the staff for their dedication and hard work at the centre of Blackpool's community. The short film's creator, Phillipa Lowthorpe, went on to direct episodes of Netflix hit series The Crown and the long-running BBC wartime drama Call the Midwife. Billie Eilish's brother Finneas tear-gassed at protest in Los Angeles
Billie Eilish's brother Finneas has claimed that he was tear-gassed by the National Guard at a 'very peaceful' protest in Los Angeles. The singer-songwriter, 27, took to social media to detail his experience, sharing his message to more than four million followers on Instagram. 'Tear gassed almost immediately at the very peaceful protest downtown – they're inciting this,' he wrote. The musician had attended a protest against the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) department's operations in Los Angeles over the weekend. The protests, which began on Friday and carried on through until Sunday, saw numerous people stage a peaceful demonstration, campaigning against ICE's raids of several workplaces in Los Angeles for alleged immigration violations. President Donald Trump authorised the deployment of the National Guard in response. On Sunday, Finneas wrote on an Instagram Story: 'F**k ICE.' His next post saw him repost a message to National Guard and military personnel who do not wish to partake in Trump's order: 'If you are National Guard or Active Duty military and you are being ordered to violate the Constitutional rights of US citizens, then this is the number to the GI Rights Hotline. There is support, you don't have to go through with it.' Several celebrities have banded together to criticise ICE and the military reaction to protests across Los Angeles, including Eva Longoria and Chrissy Teigen. On X, Longoria shared a post from California Governor Gavin Newsom, which criticises Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over his threat to deploy active-duty Marines in response to the protests. Newsom described the threat as 'deranged behaviour,' while Longoria added that it was 'Un-American' while also sharing a video of a woman being separated from her child during an ICE raid. Teigen shared various posts in support of the protests on her Instagram Stories, including a link to a mass protest on June 14. Massive raids are underway in major cities across the US as part of Trump's pledge to arrest 3,000 suspected illegal immigrants per day. One in Los Angeles descended into chaos, as counterprotests led to multiple arrests, allegedly without warrants. Two Home Depot stores, a clothing shop called Ambient Apparel, and other locations were raided by ICE agents in the predominantly Latino city of Paramount. The President issued an executive order, posted to the White House website, outlining Trump's plan to prevent undocumented immigrants from 'invading' communities and costing state and local governments. And a policy which previously restricted officers' abilities to arrest undocumented immigrants at 'sensitive' locations, such as schools, churches and hospitals, was rolled back. Got a story?
