Minnesota Lynx to face New York Liberty in 3 straight games in scheduling quirk

NBC Sports3 days ago
NEW YORK (AP) — The Minnesota Lynx have three straight games against the New York Liberty due to a scheduling quirk.
A rematch of last season's WNBA Finals feels in some ways like a playoff series for the Lynx, who visit the Liberty on Sunday before traveling home. The team doesn't play again until hosting New York on Saturday. The Lynx then return back to Barclays Center to face the Liberty on Aug. 19, playing three times in nine days.
'It's exhausting talking about the scheduling, I have nothing to say,' Minnesota coach Cheryl Reeve said.
New York doesn't have the same luxury, heading out west for back-to-back games against Los Angeles and Las Vegas on Tuesday and Wednesday before traveling to play Minnesota for the home and home set.
'It would have been nice to have it be spread out a little bit,' New York coach Sandy Brondello said. 'It's a series with a few games extra for us, not for them.'
A number of factors go into scheduling such as arena availability.
The two teams will have played four times over a three-week stretch with Minnesota winning the first matchup at home on July 30.
New York star Breanna Stewart will most likely miss all of the games while recovering from a bone bruise in her right knee. Minnesota's Napheesa Collier, who is a front-runner for the MVP this season, was out for Sunday's matchup while dealing with a sprained right ankle. She might miss the next two meetings as well as she recovers.
'You never know what's going to happen with teams and like the league didn't know that Phee and I were both going to be out,' Stewart said. 'You want to see everybody full throttle. That's the first game of the seasons or the second or the third, not August.'
Minnesota (26-5) currently has the best record in the WNBA with New York 5 1/2 games behind.

NFL training camp live updates: James Cook agrees to reported extension with Bills

[NFL preseason Week 1 schedule | Top camp stories | NFL team feeds | NFL training camp/preseason live blog] One full week of NFL preseason action is in the books, and there's plenty to talk about. On Wednesday, the Buffalo Bills reportedly solved their biggest training-camp question. Running back James Cook reportedly ended his hold-in, inking a four-year, $48 million extension with the franchise, per multiple reports. The reported deal ensures Cook, quarterback Josh Allen and wideout Khalil Shakir will remain under contract with the Bills for years to come. It also resolves the Bills' biggest source for potential drama during camp. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Cook, 25, rushed for 1,009 yards and scored a league-leading 16 rushing touchdowns with Buffalo last season. With Cook reportedly under contract, the team can now fully shift its focus to winning its first Super Bowl. Top NFL training camp stories Malik Nabers not back at practice yet: Giants star wideout Malik Nabers did not practice Tuesday, leading to more questions about his toe injury. Nabers hasn't practiced since leaving practice on Aug. 6, which he said at the time was part of "the process." Head coach Brian Daboll wouldn't answer questions Tuesday about whether Nabers requires additional tests on his toe at this point. Nabers has dealt with a lingering toe injury since college, which he's acknowledged might ultimately require surgery, but said earlier in camp the Giants have a "great" day-to-day management plan for it. Packers QB Jordan Love having minor surgery: Jordan Love is undergoing surgery to fix a torn ligament in his left thumb, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst told reporters on Tuesday. Love suffered the injury to his non-throwing hand after hitting a helmet during Sunday's 30-10 preseason loss to the Jets, and was seen wearing tape around the thumb at Monday's practice. Gutekunst added that he expects Love to return to practice next week. 'He'll be ready for Week 1 and that's the most important thing," Gutekunst said. Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers still frustrated with new helmet: Aaron Rodgers has been practicing in the Schutt Air XP Pro VTD II, after his old and preferred Schutt helmet didn't meet the NFL's new safety standards. Does he like it? "I don't like it, no," Rodgers said Tuesday. "I'm trying to change. We're in the process still. It looks like a damn spaceship out there." Rodgers has been complaining about the new helmet since mandatory minicamp in June. We'll see if anything changes. Vikings' Rondale Moore to miss second straight season due to preseason injury: The Vikings announced Tuesday that wide receiver and kick returner Rondale Moore will miss the 2025 season with a left knee injury that sustained during Saturday's preseason game against the Houston Texans. Moore previously sustained a season-ending injury to his right knee during a preseason practice in 2024 as a member of the Atlanta Falcons. The Vikings didn't disclose the precise nature of his injury Chiefs' Travis Kelce vows to return to elite level: Travis Kelce's numbers have declined the past couple seasons, and the Chiefs lost their bid to win a third straight Super Bowl in February. That's weighed on him, with Kelce telling GQ: 'I think it might have slipped a little bit because I did have a little bit more focus in trying to set myself up. And opportunities came up where I was excited to venture into a new world of acting and being an entertainer. I don't say this as 'I shouldn't have done it.' I'm just saying that my work ethic is such that I have so much pride in how I do things that I never want the product to tail off, and I feel like these past two years haven't been to my standard.' Kelce added, 'I just have such a motivation to show up this year for my guys.' Bills running back James Cook ends contract standoff by agreeing to four-year, $48 million deal

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Bills running back James Cook ended a contract standoff by agreeing to a four-year, $48 million deal on Wednesday, two people with knowledge of the agreement confirmed to The Associated Press. The contract includes $30 million in guaranteed money, one of the people said. They spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the contract has not yet been announced. The Athletic first reported the agreement. The new deal comes a day after the fourth-year player ended his weeklong standoff by returning to practice. Cook skipped four straight sessions and although he took part in warmups, he declined to play in Buffalo's preseason-opener against the New York Giants on Saturday. Cook was the NFL's co-leader with 16 touchdowns rushing last season. Cook was selected by Buffalo in the second round of the 2022 draft out of Georgia. His older brother is Dalvin Cook, best known for his six seasons in Minnesota and who spent last year appearing in two games with Dallas. Cook's 18 touchdowns, including two receiving, doubled his combined production in his first two seasons (four TDs rushing, five receiving). And he was part of an offense that finished second in the league in averaging more than 30 points per outing. Until Wednesday, Cook proved to be the odd-man out in general manager Brandon Beane's offseason binge of signing core players to multiyear contract extensions. The group was made up of quarterback Josh Allen, receiver Khalil Shakir, edge rusher Greg Rousseau, linebacker Terrel Bernard and cornerback Christian Benford. In June, Cook said he didn't begrudge his teammates for getting extensions. 'I love those guys. Whatever they got paid, they got paid. That's not my problem,' Cook said. 'In the meantime, I'm here to work and be where my feet are at.' After practicing fully during the Bills' first eight sessions of training camp this year, Cook began his 'hold-in' on Aug. 3 by watching practice wearing a white sweatsuit along the sideline. Cook also declined to participate in the Bills' voluntary spring sessions before reporting and practicing in the team's three-day mandatory minicamp in June. He said the reason behind his decision to report was not wanting to risk getting fined. 'I like my money,' Cook said. 'That's why I'm here.' ___ AP NFL:
