Pothole repairs up 30% in Staffordshire
James Bailey, assistant director for highways, also told committee members last week that the number of gullies cleaned out had increased by 20%.Councillor Mark Deaville, cabinet member for strategic highways, said there was a "lot more work to do" but the campaign to fix roads was "still going ahead at speed" across the county. "We're making great progress and there is a tremendous amount of work being done since we launched the recovery programme back in March last year," he said."By the end of this financial year we will have repaired 35,000 potholes, which is a tremendous improvement on last year, and we will have emptied 60,000 gullies."Deaville added the authority had also completed 37 road resurfacing schemes and 587 roads had also been surface dressed.He added teams were "putting more emphasis" on drainage as potholes were generally caused by water getting into the surface.The authority was looking to put more resources into finding and repairing serious and long-standing drainage problems and would work more closely with residents and landowners, he said.

Claverley wildfire battled by crews from three counties
A major wildfire on the Shropshire-Staffordshire border is being fought by a total of 13 blaze in a field of straw broke out at about 09:30 BST around Long Common in Claverley, Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) fire, which involves about one hectare of field and woodland, was spreading further, the service is also being provided by Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, and Hereford and Worcester Fire & Rescue Service. Storm Floris damage finally cleared after tree crashes into house
Storm damage caused the tree to crash into a Kilwinning home. A four-day nightmare for a Kilwinning dad finally came to an end when a tree which caused major damage to his home was finally removed by his landlord after Storm Floris wreaked havoc. But now Kilwinning man Michael Kirkum will have to find the money to fund repairs as the dramatic incident is deemed an 'Act of God' although he is seeking compensation. A tree on the footpath at the back of his house crashed into the property, causing major structural damage and part of it was still standing until landowners Riverside Scotland had it removed on Friday. It was in part thanks to the Local Democracy Reporting Service who contacted the housing firm to underline the extent of the damage. The tree smashed into Michael's house in Glenapp Place, Pennyburn when he was out last Monday afternoon. It caused a hole in the roof and tiles have been damaged, with roughcasting also needing fixed, along with guttering. Michael has to personally cover the cost in the meantime. However he is seeking compensation. Michael said: 'The tree was a danger to those living in the area as it could have fallen at any time. It was a danger to public safety. The area around the public footpath and to be made safe and I had four sleepless nights. "I was worried that the tree was still standing although weakened and it could have crashed back into my house and wrecked it. 'I couldn't get into the garden at the back of the house until the tree was taken away on Friday although it took a few phone calls to people at Riverside before they acted. 'I took part of the tree off my roof and from my garden but had to do that myself and that's not good with a heart condition. 'But now I can finally get a night's sleep.' Added Michael: 'I am hopeful of getting the roof fixed but dreading the cost. It might end up being about £2000 or near enough, so I will have to find that money. 'I have to prove that Riverside were negligent in the management of the tree and that would allow me to get compensation but it will be a long process." A spokesperson for Riverside Scotland said: 'We're sorry for the disruption caused to Mr Kirkum after part of a tree fell onto his home and damaged his roof, unfortunately caused by Storm Floris. "We visited Mr Kirkum's home to remove the loose branches and debris on Thursday and the felled tree is being removed today (Friday). We're continuing to look into this, both Riverside Scotland and Mr Kirkum have engaged insurers on this matter.'

Clifftop school in Scarborough needs urgent roof repairs
A clifftop primary school has applied for permission to replace its leaking Martin's Church of England School, in Scarborough, wants to repair its pitched roofing, saying it has begun to "show its age".According to a planning application submitted to North Yorkshire Council, the area at Holbeck Hill is "subject to high winds and heavy rain that gets blown in many directions as the wind has turbulence as it rises over the cliff top".The documents said that the issue had been managed through regular maintenance "but now it is important to find a solution to the problem". According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the school and diocese decided it was "time to reroof the pitched areas of roof with a more weatherproof pitched roof system and at the same time improve the value of this part of the structure".St Martin's School is a Church of England Aided School takes children from the Scarborough Deanery of the Church of England, which comprises 16 parishes, covering an area of more than 100 sq part of the repairs, the existing roof tiles will be removed and a new underlayer, insulation, and roof slates will be fitted that incorporate ventilated eaves, verge, and Yorkshire Council has not set a date for deciding on the application which is open to representations from members of the public.
