MK Stalin Slams Governor For Withholding Assent To Karunanidhi University Bill

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has strongly criticised Governor RN Ravi for delaying assent to a bill passed by the State Assembly to establish a university in the name of late DMK patriarch, his father and former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.
Addressing a government function in Thanjavur district, MK Stalin said it has been more than 40 days since the bill was sent to Raj Bhavan, yet there has been no response. "What important work does the Governor have other than this," Mr Stalin questioned, expressing frustration over the prolonged silence. He also alleged that the Governor has avoided granting an appointment to the Higher Education Minister Govi Chezhian, anticipating that the matter would be raised.
The Tamil Nadu Assembly had cleared the bill in the last week of April, and it was forwarded to the Governor on May 2, 2025. Despite the Supreme Court's recent landmark verdict directing Governors to act within defined timelines - one month to return or assent to a bill, and three months if assent is withheld or bills referred to the President against the advice of the council of Ministers - the Governor has not taken any action.
"This attitude hasn't changed even after the Supreme Court verdict," Mr Stalin remarked, calling out what he sees as a deliberate attempt to block the legislative process. "If we run out of patience and rise, we will make the Governor give assent," he warned.
The ongoing standoff marks yet another flashpoint in the strained relationship between the DMK-led state government and Governor RN Ravi.
So far, there has been no official word from Raj Bhavan. However, observers speculate that the Governor may be considering either withholding assent or referring the bill to the President, options that fall within the court-mandated framework. The situation is being closely watched both in the state and at the national level.
The ruling DMK wants to establish what it calls a state-of-the-art university in Kumbakonam, bifurcating the Bharathidasan University in Trichy.
The DMK has consistently alleged that the BJP-led Centre is using Governors to interfere in opposition-ruled states - accusing them of undermining the authority of elected governments and running parallel administrations. The BJP, however, has denied these charges, insisting that Governors are acting within their constitutional limits.

Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani's last rites performed with full state honours in Rajkot
Rajkot (Gujarat) [India], June 16 (ANI): The last rites of former Gujarat Chief Minister and BJP leader Vijay Rupani were performed with full state honours on Monday in Gujarat's Rajkot. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and other leaders were also present at the funeral. Former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was accorded a 21-gun salute during his last rites, as a mark of respect to the departed leader. The last rites were performed at the Ramnathpara crematorium. The funeral procession began from his residence at 5 pm. Rajkot Police had implemented comprehensive security measures and traffic restrictions to facilitate the procession. Earlier on Monday, in Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel laid a wreath and paid his last respects to former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, whose sudden demise in the Air India plane crash has left the state in mourning. Chief Minister Patel, accompanied by senior Cabinet ministers, stood in solemn tribute at the mortuary block of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, where Rupani's mortal remains were kept for public homage. Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel and Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi also paid their respects. Former Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel was among the early visitors to the mortuary; he met family members and offered condolences. An emotional moment also unfolded when Rupani's wife, Anjali Rupani, bid an emotional farewell to her husband. Surrounded by close family members and friends, she stood by his mortal remains as rituals began ahead of the final rites. Former CM Vijay Rupani's family expressed profound grief over the loss. 'This is a sad time not just for our family but also for the other 270 families. I thank the Police, Aarogya staff, Civil Defence, Fire Services and RSS workers for their rescue efforts during this incident, which are praiseworthy. I also express gratitude to PM Modi, CM Bhupendra Patel and other leaders for supporting and standing with not just our family, but also all other families,' he said. Rushabh reflected on his father's political legacy, noting that Rupani had touched countless lives in his five-decade-long public life. He added, 'My father touched many lives during the 50-55 years of his political life. Today, all those people are standing by us. Many party workers from Punjab are also coming here to express their condolences.' Rupani was among the 241 who died when the London-bound Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed shortly after takeoff, colliding with a doctor's hostel complex near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12. Meanwhile, in the Ahmedabad plane crash, out of the 242 people involved, the sole survivor, Vishwashkumar Ramesh, a British national of Indian origin, is currently undergoing treatment for his injuries. BJP voted out of power in Mizoram's Chakma council
Aizawl: The BJP executive committee in the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC), led by chief executive member (CEM) Molin Kumar Chakma, was voted out of power in a no-trust vote on Monday. This paves the way for Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) to form the next executive committee in the council, reports from Kamalanagar (Chawngte town) in south Mizoram's Lawngtlai district bordering Bangladesh said. The no-confidence motion was moved by ZPM member Doymoy Daveng Chakma during a special session of the council chaired by Lakkhan Chakma, saying that the executive council headed by MK Chakma no longer enjoys the confidence of the CADC and has no sufficient members of district council (MDCs) supporting it. Of 17 MDCs present in the sitting of the council, 15 voted in favour of the no-trust move, and one MDC opposed it. The lone MNF MDC, former CEM Rasik Mohan Chakma, did not cast his vote. MK Chakma became the CEM in the BJP-ruled CADC on Feb 27 after ousting RM Chakma of MNF. While ZPM tried to form the executive council, BJP joined hands with disgruntled ZPM members and secured the support of the lone MNF MDC, forming the executive council. However, the political scenario changed rapidly, leading to the ouster of MK Chakma who will be replaced by the present chairman of the council, Lakkhan Chakma. CADC is experiencing frequent political changes since MNF bagged 10 seats of 20-member CADC in the May 9, 2023 elections.
