Murdered KDM official identified as rising star Nokulunga Mashabane

The Citizen28-06-2025
Nokulunga Mashabane, a senior municipal official, was found murdered in her car on Friday, prompting a murder investigation and tributes from Mayor Ali Ngidi.
Mashabane (31) was discovered on the Zinkwazi Link Road around 1.30am with gunshot wounds to the head and neck.
KwaDukuza police confirmed that a case of murder is being investigated. No arrests have been made.
KwaDukuza mayor Ali Ngidi expressed his shock, describing Mashabane as a 'rising star' in local government.
Ngidi described her as humble, respectful, professional and deeply committed to her work.
He said the two had spoken the day before at a school function and were due to meet again at a Youth Month event on Friday.
Mashabane began her municipal career in 2019 as a secretary in the communications department and recently rose to a position in the mayor's office, overseeing intergovernmental relations and protocol.
Originally from KwaMshibe in Maphumulo, she held qualifications in public relations from DUT and was studying towards an honours degree with UNISA.
Ngidi said Mashabane was known for her grace, work ethic and passion for public service.
'She was so gentle she wouldn't hurt a fly, and yet she was met with such unimaginable brutality.'
He called for calm and urged the public to avoid speculation while police investigations continue.
'Violence against women and children has become so pervasive that in some circles it is viewed as normal, and that is unacceptable. We must let the law take its course and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.'

City of Tshwane cracks down on homelessness amid crime concerns

City of Tshwane MMC Obakeng Ramabodu leads a clean-up campaign to address homelessness and crime in Pretoria. Image: Supplied In a bold move, the City of Tshwane's MMC for Agriculture and Environmental Management, Obakeng Ramabodu, led a clean-up operation along the Apies River, resulting in the demolition of makeshift shelters housing homeless individuals. Ramabodu accused the homeless of being robbers and criminals, claiming they stole valuables like cellphones and handbags from students of Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and Unisa. During the operation, metro police and waste management officials found individuals with allegedly stolen items, including handbags and a cellphone. Ramabodu believes that these items are evidence of the homeless individuals' involvement in criminal activities. Video Player is loading. This is what we found: handbags which belong to students who go to schools here at Unisa and TUT," he said. This comes after over 200 TUT students voiced concerns about crime and safety in their areas during a colloquium hosted at Tshwane House last month. Students residing in Sunnyside flats owned by foreigners reportedly face exposure to drugs and illicit activities, while those living in townships like Soshanguve and Ga-Rankuwa are frequently targeted by criminals who steal their valuables, including cellphones and laptops. Ramabodu stressed that the valuable items found indicate criminal behaviour, saying: "These people are not homeless; these are crooks and criminals." He urged the metro police to review by-laws and take decisive action, warning that the city won't back down on its clean-up campaign. "We are going to engage with the metro police to intensify this programme at least once a week until we get it right," he said. He also claimed that drugs were found in the possession of the individuals during the operation, stating that they included both South African and foreign nationals. The Tshwane metro police are yet to comment on the plans to address homelessness and on whether the demolition of makeshift shelters was justified.

KZN municipal official's ‘secret' husband in court over her brutal murder

The husband of Nokulunga Mashabane (32), the KwaDukuza municipal official who was brutally murdered in KZN in June, made his first appearance in court yesterday. North Coast Courier reports that Thobani Nzama (31) and his co-accused, Sipho Mgwaba (26), are charged with premeditated murder, conspiracy to commit murder and defeating the ends of justice. Mashabane's family said they are still in shock, not only over her violent death, but also the recent revelation that she was secretly married to Nzama. More than 100 KwaDukuza municipal employees, family and residents gathered outside the KwaDukuza Magistrate's Court, calling for justice in the case of Mashabane. She worked as the manager of intergovernmental relations and protocol in the office of the mayor. The mother of three was found dead in her car on the N2-Zinkwazi link road in June, with multiple gunshot wounds to the head. Her brother, Thokozani Mashabane, expressed deep grief and anger after the court appearance. 'We always knew him as Nokulunga's partner, but we were shocked to learn that they had gotten married in January, without any of us, her family, knowing. 'There were no witnesses. He abused Nokulunga, and our suspicions only deepened when he failed to attend her funeral. We hope the court gives him the harshest sentence possible,' he said. The Mashabane family was visibly emotional throughout the proceedings. Their sorrow was palpable as they watched the two accused men being led into court. The accused have been remanded in custody for a bail application this coming Friday. Breaking news at your fingertips… Follow Caxton Network News on Facebook and join our WhatsApp channel. Protesters oppose bail for men allegedly linked to murder of KZN municipal worker

Protesters gathered outside the KwaDukuza magistrate's court north of Durban on Friday before the appearance of two men, one of them the husband of slain municipal employee Nokulunga Happiness Mashabane, who was killed in June. Police spokesperson Col Robert Netshiunda said police and private security arrested Mashabane's husband and an alleged accomplice on Wednesday. Mashabane, 31, was found dead in her vehicle along the Zinkwazi link road on June 27. 'She was found with gunshot wounds to the head and was declared deceased on the scene,' said Netshiunda. South African Municipal Workers Union secretary in KwaDukuza, Nkululeko Dladla, said they were opposed to the two suspects getting bail. Their protest coincided with the start of Women's Month. 'We, as men, should be seen to be at the forefront of fighting gender-based violence (GBV). We want to send a message that any form of GBV is unacceptable, whether it is meted out to women or children,' said Dladla. King Shaka Street was cordoned off with a strong police presence as the protesters bearing placards chanted songs denouncing the murder. Mashabane was employed as a manager dealing with intergovernmental relations and protocol in the mayor's office.
