"The captain of the ship was trying to reverse it and then jerk the bow into the teeth of the storm, so he was reversing down towards Nobbys," Wendt reported for the paper on the 10th anniversary of the storm.
"There is a great shot that (former Herald photographer Darren Pateman) got of the Pasha Bulker being hit by a wave and was bent almost over the rocks at the Cowrie Hole.
"I thought that's where it is going to end up. But it kept going in reverse towards Nobbys at a rate of knots.
"This wave just swamped it and all you could see was a bit of the funnel and a little bit of the bow and then it disappeared in the murk towards Nobbys.''
The ship ultimately ran aground on Nobbys Beach as its crew sheltered together inside the swaying 225-metre vessel, before they were rescued from the deck by a pair of Westpac Rescue Helicopters.
Notably among them, crewman Greg Ramplin, who could be seen descending into the tempest's teeth countless times to winch the crew to safety, and veteran lifeguard Warren Smith who leapt on board a jet ski with a few fellow surf life savers to brave the ocean and patrol from the water.
After 90 minutes, the extraordinary rescue - which continues to be lauded as one of the great maritime operations - was over. Ramplin collapsed, utterly spent, on the sodden turf outside the surf club.
The dramatic events of June 8 preceded more than a year of investigation and scrutiny by the national transport watchdog, which finally found the bulk of blame for the grounding rested on the ship's master, who either failed or didn't properly understand how to ballast the ship for bad weather.
The investigation, which prompted significant changes to the Port of Newcastle's arrival and vessel queuing protocols, found that most of the 27 ships, including the Pasha Bulker, that had tried to ride out the storm in the port's coal queue dragged anchors in the gale before the Pasha's master attempted to haul anchor and adjust the ship's course ultimately leading to the grounding just after 9am.
"A number of masters did not appropriately ballast their ships," investigators concluded in 2008, among a litany of findings and recommendations.
"It was also found that the substantial ship queue increased the risks in the anchorage and resulted in another near grounding, a near collision and a number of close-quarters situations at the time."
The Japanese-owned ship was renamed Drake for a time, and then Anthea in 2018, and was last reported to be off the coast of Brazil this week en route to the Port of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates.

‘Absolutely dumping': More than 40cm of snow kickstarts NSW ski season

Across the border, Mt Hotham resort reported a whopping 51cm of snow so far a storm there, with 32cm falling in the past 24 hours. Snow was still lightly falling at the resort on Sunday morning, with the temperature dipping to a frigid -3C. The NSW snow season ended earlier for the second year in a row in 2024 after one of the warmest winters on record. The Bureau reported above average winter mean temperatures across the state, in particular in the south and parts of the east coast.

Australia's snow resorts have seen a bumper start to the season as a cold front sweeps through the country's south east, sending temperatures and powder plummeting. Blizzard conditions have hit ski fields in NSW and Victoria over the weekend, bringing the biggest start to the snow season in years. In one clip shared by Hotham Alpine Resort in Victoria, a man can be seen wading through knee-high snow after a massive dump. '51cm storm total,' the resort wrote on social media. 'We're not skipping leg day at Hotham!' In NSW, Thredbo is reporting 26cm on the ground and Perisher's live snow cam shows a peak of around 35cm. 'And just like that, winter 2025 is here!' Thredbo wrote in a post. 'Snow is falling and there's over 50cm in the forecast … let's GO!' Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Jonathon How said overnight snowfall marks being reported included 25cm at Perisher, 32cm at Hotham, 26cm at Buller and 37cm at Falls Creek. 'So really, really big numbers,' he said. Mr How said Perisher, Thredbo and Charlotte Pass could see another 10 to 20cm on Sunday. 'We've got a couple more centimetres to come in Victoria and pretty much anywhere above about 900m will get snow today across the alpine areas.' 'We are on track for our coldest day this year,' he said. Loading In the Alps, the mercury plummeted to -3.5 degrees at Mount Hotham while Falls Creek dropped to -3 degrees and Mount Baw Baw hit -2 degrees. The skies finally opened up on Friday, bringing desperately needed rain, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. Efron said the wet conditions were forecast to continue on Sunday, with rainfall of between 10 and 25 millimetres expected through parts of the south and east of the state. For northern parts of the state, another 5 to 15 millimetres of rain was expected today, he said. 'We are seeing some of those drought-affected areas receive some really useful rainfall, but not all of them have seen that,' he explained.
