The LeftBehinds review – dystopian thriller finds the National Theatre firing on all cylinders

The Guardian17-03-2025
This is a textbook example of how to approach theatre for schools. Its new touring production, reaching 10,000 secondary students, finds the National Theatre firing on all cylinders with a gripping, often side-splitting adventure that is sensitive to serious themes yet never cringey.
Ross Willis has written a post-apocalyptic quest stuffed with quotable lines, a cult in the making that crackles with the split-second retorts and abundant soul of his 2022 play Wonder Boy. Ned Bennett directs with customary audacity, jolting the story forwards for the school-hall audience. Jessica Hung Han Yun (lighting) and Giles Thomas (sound) meld a lurid atmosphere for Georgia Lowe's set and costumes, an extravagant fusion of wild west, sci-fi, ancient Rome and chivalric romance. Yet, cleverly, the props are mostly modified gadgets and cuddly toys recognisable to the audience (it's recommended for over-12s).
In a blasted landscape, teenager Kit leads a ragtag group on the hunt for the scattered parts of an android she hopes, once reassembled, will reconnect her with her mother, played in intermittent voiceovers by Sharon D Clarke. Ryn Alleyne is excellent as the fiery Kit, grounding the story in emotion that offsets the production's plentiful pulp stylings. There are quips here that would make John Carpenter proud.
This is the first professional theatre that many audience members will have seen, and Bennett's in-the-round production references forms they may know better, including video games, blockbuster movies and graphic novels. Willis has always written next-level stage directions (from Wonder Boy: '100 eyeballs come out from the floorboards') and one challenge for Bennett is that a character in Kit's gang is a detached android arm. Francis Nunnery, dressed in skin-tight green with that limb in hot pink, has a wild time essentially operating his own hand as a puppet. There's a real puppet, too, a plushy and super-cute blue critter designed, built and directed by Matt Hutchinson. Its outrageous flatulence proves essential to the plot. Did I mention the trash-talking, gun-toting baby in an outsized nappy? Or the audience interaction demanding we bellow lies?
Along the way Willis engages with issues of fear, friendship and the younger generation's scorched inheritance, targeting an age range (Years 7-9) where the youngest and oldest can seem worlds apart. Perhaps it has a tad too much toilet humour in the mix, and the storytelling veers a little off course before the final showdown, but there's a real sense of fun coming off everyone involved. Among the recent Lamda graduates in the cast, Tanaka Mpofu is hilarious.
The National's recent 100% cut to its Primary Schools Touring theatre programme has been rightly criticised. Younger children, too, deserve this kind of rush in their school hall rather than being introduced to theatre through digital learning or a trip to a playhouse. Certainly, more people should get a chance to see The LeftBehinds: fingers crossed that, once the tour is over, this dystopian thriller has a glorious afterlife.
Touring secondary schools in Peterborough, 17-21 March, and London, 24-28 March

The Scottish seaside village with beautiful beach that appeared in Outlander

It is a wonderful destination for a day out by the coast. We are approaching the end of August, which means summer is coming to an end. While there are still hopefully a few weeks of good weather left before autumn rolls around, now is the last chance to plan a proper summer staycation. Anybody struggling to decide where in Scotland to head for a day or two might want to consider Troon. Situated around just 45 minutes out of Glasgow by car, it is a great choice for those living in Scotland's biggest city. Troon is a seaside town in South Ayrshire that is best known for its beach and golf course. Troon Beach offers panoramic views out across to the Isle of Arran, and features clean sands that make it a great place for a bit of sunbathing. Anyone who is a fan of Outlander has even more reason to visit Troon, and especially its beach. This is because the town was used to film an important scene of the beloved historical drama series. The first season of Outlander ends with Jamie Fraser and Claire Randall, portrayed by Sam Heughan and Caitríona Balfe respectively, setting sail for France. These scenes were in fact filmed at Troon Beach, making it a must-visit for those looking to follow in the footsteps of the iconic characters. Even if you aren't an Outlander fan, Troon has plenty to offer anybody seeking a fun-filled staycation. While Troon Beach is a definite standout, there is lots else to see and do. The Royal Troon Golf Club's Old Course is among the host courses for prestigious Open Championship, and is a great destination to enjoy a game amidst lovely green surroundings. Elsewhere, younger visitors will love the magical Fullarton Fairy Trail walk. In Troon, visitors have a variety of options when it comes to accommodation. The town is home to both hotels and holiday rentals. On Airbnb, holidaymakers can rent out an entire cottage that features two bedrooms and fits up to four visitors. Known as 34 South Beach Lane, it can be booked for £398 for two nights. The cottage is situated one street over from the beach, and is a couple of minutes on foot from the Royal Troon. Inside, there is an open-plan contemporary kitchen with a dining island and a living room that leads through French doors to a private enclosed rear garden. The accomodation has a rating of 4.98 out of five on Airbnb based on 112 reviews, and is classed as a 'guest favourite' property on the site. It has been praised in reviews for its beachside location and "lots of extra little touches". Elsewhere, slightly further afield is The Wee Lamb Cottage in Maybole that can be booked through for £557 for two nights. The property, which is a short distance from Troon by car, sleeps up to two guests. The cottage features a sizeable living room, a "well-equipped" kitchen, and a shower room. French doors lead outside where guests can enjoy an enclosed back garden. On The Wee Lamb Cottage has earned very positive feedback from guests. One recent visitor described the accommodation as "very clean and tastefully furnished", though holidaymakers may prefer to stay closer to Troon. Back in Troon, the Marine Troon is one of the most popular hotels. Featuring a restaurant, a bar, and an indoor pool, the hotel has a rating of 4.4 out of five on Tripadvisor.

Ardgowan House at Achandunie, Ardross, has an elevated position with views over the surrounding the 1.74 acres in farmland and the Cromarty Firth, and towards Ardross Castle. Much of the filming of the BBC hit show takes place in the castle grounds and on some of the local estates. Property seller Galbraith's has marketed the property, saying "it isn't unusual to see the film crew out and about or catch glimpses of the local area on the programme itself". READ MORE: YouTube star goes viral for attempt to travel length of Scotland's longest river The home, built in 2000, has five bedrooms (two with en suite shower rooms) plus three reception rooms, spacious dining kitchen, office, store room, utility room, WC and family bathroom. Phiddy Robertson of Galbraith, who is handling the sale, said: 'This is a beautiful home which has been thoughtfully designed for modern family life, with a wealth of reception spaces, two offices and useful ground floor bedroom. "The setting and the gardens are particularly attractive, providing great privacy and tranquillity but only five minutes from Alness.' Outbuildings include a double garage with power, lighting, and attached garden store plus a greenhouse, polytunnel and a double glazed, timber summer house with power and lighting. The town of Alness is about five minutes by car (2.2 miles), while the city of Inverness, with its wide range of amenities and airport with regular flights to the south and Europe, is about 45 minutes. The first ever celebrity version of The Traitors will be broadcast this autumn, with an all-star cast taking on the ultimate game of deceit and betrayal. Who owns Ardross Castle from The Traitors? The BBC castle has passed ownership many times, being purchased by the Duke of Sutherland in the 18th century before it was sold again in 1845 to Sir Alexander Matheson for £90,000. The castle underwent many improvements under the supervision of engineer William Mackenzie. After passing hands once again, the estate was broken up and sold in 1937. The castle itself was purchased by Mr and Mrs Austin Mardon before it was then sold to the McTaggart family in 1983. According to Ardross Castle's website, the family began restoring the site to its former glory, repairing the walled garden and lawns. When will The Celebrity Traitors be on TV? The Celebrity Traitors will air in October, the BBC has announced. The celebrity edition of the game of deception and betrayal will feature stars including actor and broadcaster Sir Stephen Fry, Olympian Tom Daley, singer Charlotte Church and TV presenter Kate Garraway. Also in the line-up is acclaimed actress Celia Imrie, comedian Alan Carr, presenter Jonathan Ross, broadcaster Clare Balding and singer Paloma Faith. Some 19 famous faces will gather in the Scottish Highlands for the chance to win a cash prize of up to £100,000 for a charity of their choice. Other stars joining the group at Ardross Castle are former England rugby player and podcaster Joe Marler and singer Cat Burns.
