Violence is never the optimal way to solve conflicts. Unfortunately, this primal tendency of ours does occasionally show up from time to time. Be it the frustration from someone cutting the queue, or some kind of political disagreement, the red mist is never far behind.
A festive celebration turned chaotic when a brawl erupted during the Songkran Festival at 1 Utama Shopping Centre over the weekend. The incident occurred at the open-air car park, where the festival event was being held from 10th to 20th April, featuring water games, Thai delicacies, and live music performances.
The parking lot was a mess with chairs and fists being thrown in the air, between the bigger eating area tents and brightly lit food stalls, the brawlers fought it out in the rain. Meanwhile, onlookers watch the degeneracy in awe while shooting off a squirt or two with their water pistols.
Commenters were quick to point out the absurdity of a foreign event being reduced to such a state: 'Such a good Songkran event spoiled by a few hooligans…' The brawl has turned into the fly in the ointment for a 10-day event. Others voice their worry that authorities are banning such events and ruining the fun for everyone else: 'Oh great, brainless, next time authorities won't approve such events.' Petaling Jaya Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Shahrulnizam Ja'far, stated that although no official reports have been lodged, investigations will nonetheless proceed.
Songkran, the traditional Thai New Year celebrated annually from 13th to 15th April. While globally recognised for its exuberant water festivities, the festival's core traditions involve visiting temples, offering food to monks, and performing ritual water pourings over Buddha statues and elders' hands, reflecting reverence and the cleansing of sins.

Mohd Na'im urges firm action against misuse of children's images on social media

KUALA LUMPUR: Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), Senator Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, has urged authorities to take firm action against the misuse of children's and teenagers' images on social media, particularly involving immoral content. He was referring to recent revelations by actress and social media influencer Mek Yun, who disclosed that a photo of her from her school days was circulated in a Facebook group allegedly promoting sexual content involving children. 'Even more shocking was the open confession of a group member who admitted to committing sexual assault against a child. 'This is a heinous and disgusting crime that not only violates the law, but also transgresses the boundaries of humanity and the moral values of society,' he said in a statement today. Mohd Na'im stressed that protecting children was a shared responsibility that must be upheld by all members of society, and such heinous acts should not be allowed to persist. He also advised adults to be mindful of their behaviour and language when dealing with children, both in person and online. At the same time, he reminded the public of Islamic teachings that emphasised protection for the vulnerable. 'In this regard, the words of Allah provide very clear guidance, namely: 'Allah does not like evil words to be uttered publicly unless by one who has been wronged. And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing' (Surah An-Nisa': 148). 'The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also warned against neglecting the rights of the weak, particularly orphans and women. He said that anyone who fails to uphold their rights will bear the sin (Narrated by Ibn Majah – classified as sahih by al-Albani),' he said. Mohd Na'im also reminded parents to monitor their children's social media usage and educate them about digital safety, while urging the authorities to strengthen laws and monitoring of online sexual crimes.

Govt reviewing child protection laws amid rise in sexual assault cases

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is reviewing child protection laws following a recent increase in reported cases of sexual assault involving underage children. Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the government would not remain silent on the matter, adding that legal issues fall under the purview of Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said. "I have requested that the matter be reviewed, especially concerning the age limit for child protection, as practised in Australia. "However, I cannot comment further as the issue also comes under the jurisdiction of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). "What's important is that we are not sitting idle," she told reporters after launching the Social Welfare Department's eBantuan system here today. She was responding to questions regarding a Facebook group called "Grup Budak-Budak Sekolah Rendah" (Primary School Kids Group), which recently went viral for allegedly featuring images of underage children for immoral purposes. It is understood that the group had shared content, including photos of minors uploaded without consent, accompanied by lewd captions and comments. According to local media reports, the group is believed to have existed since May 2014 and had around 12,000 members. However, it has reportedly been inaccessible on the platform since last Wednesday. Meanwhile, Nancy said the ministry would not provide further comments as the case is currently under police investigation.
