African players in Europe: Salah rescues Reds after special season
Mohamed Salah completed a memorable season by scoring to salvage a 1-1 Premier League draw for champions Liverpool against Crystal Palace in the final round at the weekend.
It was the 29th goal of the season for the Premier League Golden Boot winner and the 32-year-old Egypt captain also claimed 18 assists.
Apart from a record-equalling fourth Golden Boot, Salah won the English football writers and Professional Footballers' Association player of the year awards.

MOHAMED SALAH (Liverpool)
Liverpool were heading for defeat when Salah delighted the Anfield faithful by bundling the ball home six minutes from time to help secure a 1-1 draw with FA Cup winners Crystal Palace.
ISMAILA SARR (Crystal Palace)
The Senegal forward threatened to upset Liverpool's trophy celebrations when he beat Alisson Becker in the ninth minute.
ANTOINE SEMENYO (Bournemouth)
The Ghana forward struck twice in the final 15 minutes to give Bournemouth a 2-0 win over relegated Leicester City. He scored from close range to break the deadlock, then struck with a precise finish from the edge of the area.
AMAD DIALLO (Manchester United)
The exciting young Ivorian winger nodded a superb Bruno Fernandes cross into the net to put United ahead on 73 minutes and they struck again for a 2-0 win over 10-man Aston Villa, who had goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez sent off just before half-time.
MOHAMMED KUDUS (West Ham)
The Ghana star set the seal on the Hammers' 3-1 win at relegated Ipswich when, after exchanging passes with Guido Rodriguez, he bent a shot beyond goalkeeper Christian Walton in the 87th minute.
BRYAN MBEUMO (Brentford)
The Cameroon striker opened the scoring for the Bees against Wolves with his 20th goal of the season after Algerian international Rayan Ait-Nouri was caught in possession. But a 1-1 draw ended the London club's slim hopes of European qualification.
MARSHALL MUNETSI (Wolves)
It was the Zimbabwe midfielder who dashed Brentford's dreams of continental competition with a superb first-time finish from 20 yards into the top corner 15 minutes from time.
SPAIN
YAN DIOMANDE (Leganes)
The 18-year-old winger from the Ivory Coast sparkled as Leganes beat Real Valladolid 3-0 but were still relegated. Diomande teed up Javi Hernandez for the opener and then scored a fine second himself. The winger drove into the box, dodged a defender and finished neatly for his second goal in four matches.
PAPE GUEYE (Villarreal)
Senegal midfielder Gueye doubled his La Liga goals tally for the season with a brace as Villarreal romped to a 4-2 win against Sevilla. His first was a drilled strike from the edge of the box for the Yellow Submarine's second, and the second a lethal close-range finish to wrap up the win. Gueye has been an important part of Villarreal's rise to fifth and Champions League qualification.

South Africa's Lerato Makua looking to show readiness to step onto the biggest stage again after injury, by shining at the Rugby Africa Women's Cup in Madagascar. For Springbok Women's assistant coach Franzel September, the forthcoming Rugby Africa Women's Cup is vital preparation for the World Cup, not just an unwelcome distraction on the road to the showpiece in England in August and September. It is also an opportunity for those on the fringes of selection to make a late push for inclusion in the World Cup squad. The Springboks jet off to Madagascar tomorrow to take part in the tournament at Stade Makis in Antananarivo that also features the hosts, Uganda and Kenya. The South African women open the tournament with a match against Uganda in Saturday. "This is all part of our prep for the World Cup, this is our next stop," September said. "In the last few years that we've travelled to Madgascar it wasn't easy – an away game is never easy – but we try to stick to what works for us. "It will always be a challenge playing in Africa. The conditions are different. I can remember that you need to travel about 20 or 30 minutes to get to the playing field so it's always a challenge. But we're up for the challenge because we know that we need to get past that. So it's important for us to stay glued to our systems." September lists the recent European tour and the coming matches against Canada and the Black Ferns as other World Cup building blocks. "If you look at our squad we've got eight players that have played in the previous World Cup, so we're excited to see what they can do. Every opportunity we can get for playing minutes is important, especially for the women's game."

Bongeka Gamede had put the defending African champions in the driving seat in the 74th minute, as she rattled the roof of the net with a thunderbolt free-kick. On paper, it was the perfect day in the office for Desiree Ellis and her troops, but the coach will know that Banyana's work is still cut out for them ahead of Wafcon next month. The Copper Queens' talisman Barbra Banda had many openings in this game, especially in the first half. She only lacked support, which could have punished Banyana. So, given there'll be no room for error at Wafcon, Banyana need to be at their best in defence ... if they are to plug their shortcomings. What was also disappointing about Banyana's defence is that they had their regular defence, including central defender Bambanai Mbane and Lebohang Ramalepe. The latter seemingly forgot her role as a defender early on, as she was mostly high up the field, instead of keeping Banyana's shape in defence. Even with her adding numbers up-front, Seoponsenwe and Amogelang Motau were still not clinical in the early stages of the match. Ramalepe was fully converted to a forward in the second half and that swung the tide in Banyana's favour, as Gamede and Seoposenwe chipped in with their all important goals. Ellis will put her head on the block in the next few weeks and announce her final squad for Wafcon as she's already naming the preliminary squad.
