Spanish tourists warned to avoid saying these two words when on holiday
British holidaymakers heading to Spain this summer are being warned not to say two words when in the country. To avoid embarrassment, tourists should think twice before attempting to speak the language without proper preparation.
ahead of a trip to another country, many of us attempt to brush up on the language used as a sign of courtesy and respect, as well as to prepare us for any emergencies which may arise.
It can also help you avoid making any embarrassing mistakes, as certain phrases have different connotations in different languages and cultures. According to Claudio Guasti, City Lit's Head of School Culture and Communication, Brits might accidentally say they're aroused, rather than warm.
Sharing some of the most common Spanish language mistakes Brits make when travelling.
Guasti said: "Using 'Estoy caliente' as a literal translation of 'I am hot' in English may cause you some embarrassment, as this phrase means 'I am aroused'.
"Instead, you should say 'tengo calor' (I have heat). Avoid using 'soy cálida/cálido' (I am warm). In this context, it refers more to someone's personality, like being a warm or kind person, rather than physical temperature."
Sharing examples of when to use the word caliente, he said for example 'me gustaría un té caliente', meaning "I would like a hot tea". Additionally, saying "el café está muy caliente", meaning "the coffee is very hot", is also okay.
Another common mistake is saying you're pregnant rather than embarrassed. Guasti added: "Lots of Spanish words sound very similar to their English translation, for example, café for coffee, tren for train, or plato for plate.
"It can be easy when following this pattern to assume the word 'embarazada' might mean 'embarrassed', but it actually means 'pregnant', which could raise a few eyebrows and cause a few smirks if used in the wrong context.
"To really say you are feeling embarrassed or sheepish, say 'estoy avergonzado/a'."

Arguably the most famous Spanish phrase ironically comes from an American movie - the Terminator sequel, T2: Judgement Day.
Arnold Schwarzenegger's titular character says 'hasta la vista', meaning 'until I see you (again)', though it's a phrase that is almost never used in Spain.
Guasti says: "Instead, try saying the much more commonly used 'hasta luego' or 'adiós' instead, which mean 'see you later' and 'goodbye' respectively."
To help Brits stay safe and prepared abroad, language experts at online Spanish classes platform Preply recently shared the top Spanish phrases every traveller should know before jetting off.
¡Ayuda!
English definition: Help!
"Ayuda" is arguably the most crucial Spanish word you should know before your holiday. Shouting this in an emergency will alert those nearby that you're in distress and need assistance.
This word is pronounced 'Ah-yoo-dah', with the 'ah' pronounced like the 'a' in 'dark', and the 'dah' pronounced like the 'da' in 'dad'.
Llama a la policía
English definition: Call the police
Nobody anticipates the need for police assistance on holiday, but it's always better to be safe than sorry. If you're in danger or have witnessed a crime, this phrase will help you get help swiftly.
Necesito un doctor
English definition: I need a doctor
Being able to communicate that you need medical help is just as important as purchasing travel insurance for your safety and well-being.
Approximately 3,000 Brits require urgent medical treatment while on holiday abroad every week, so knowing how to ask for a doctor could be life-saving.

Looking for a stellar hotel for your next weekend getaway from Chicago? A luxury resort only an hour from the Windy City just earned a coveted top spot on Travel + Leisure 's 'World's Best Awards' survey for 2025. Among the best resorts in the continental U.S., Deer Path Inn —an English-style retreat that opened in Lake Forest, Illinois back in 1929—was ranked No. 13 in the country, earning a score of 96.94 by T+L readers. (In comparison, the number one venue Primland Resort in Meadows of Dan, Virginia scored a near-perfect 99.40.) This year, nearly 180,000 readers weighed in on the survey where more than 657,000 votes were cast. Responders rated rooms and facilities, location, service, food, and overall value for over 8,700 properties and then the average was calculated. A golden thread for these responses was that travelers seemed to prioritize access to nature and secluded luxury. In terms of Deer Path Inn, which is celebrating 95 years of hospitality, readers praised the "quaint" hotel for "its elegant afternoon teas, wood-paneled lounges, and its close proximity to Lake Michigan's gorgeous shoreline," per the outlet. The Scottish Borders village that was once called 'most beautiful' by Walter Scott
The legendary writer also described it as Scotland's "most romantic" settlement. Scotland is home to countless picturesque and peaceful towns that often fly under the radar. If you are looking for a quiet staycation, these make for a great destination. If you are stuck on where to head for a day out, there is one Scottish Borders town that is definitely a hidden gem. The settlement is so pretty that it was even once named the best-looking town in Scotland by a legendary writer. As previously reported by the Daily Record, Kelso was described as the "most beautiful, if not the most romantic town in Scotland" by legendary Scottish author Sir Walter Scott. Born in Edinburgh in 1771, Scott is one of Scotland's most prolific novelists, poets, and historians—known for works such as Ivanhoe and Rob Roy. Nestled at the junction of the rivers Tweed and Teviot, Kelso is ideal for a quiet retreat. When looking at the town's many beauty spots and historic attractions, it is easy to see why Walter Scott heaped praise upon it. At the centre of Kelso is The Square, which was once a bustling market place and the hub of the town dating back to the Middle Ages. Claimed to be the largest in Scotland, the square is surrounded by impressive Georgian and Victorian buildings. Today, visitors to Kelso will find a range of charming and quirky independent businesses around the historic town square. At its centre is the Bull Ring, where bulls would have been tethered during cattle markets. Another of the most picturesque spots in Kelso is the ruins of Kelso Abbey. While the site is currently closed due to high level masonry inspections, it provides a spectacular and historic backdrop. Kelso Abbey dates back to the 12th century, and was once one of the country's biggest and richest religious houses. According to Historic Environment Scotland, what remains of the church is "one of the most spectacular architectural achievements in medieval Scotland". Elsewhere, visitors to Kelso should make time to head to Floors Castle. The castle, situated just out of town within idyllic parkland overlooking the River Tweed, is Scotland's biggest inhabited house. Dating back to the 18th century, Floors Castle and the surrounding grounds are open to the public. Inside, visitors will find everything from fine art to porcelain and tapestries, while the grounds include Victorian Walled Gardens and a beautiful riverside trail. Another historic attraction is the Kelso Racecourse, which is a thoroughbred horse racing venue that dates back to 1822. Thanks to its polite and helpful staff, it has earned the reputation of being Britain's "friendliest racecourse". Kelso also features a wide range of delicious food spots. Whether you are looking for a light bite to eat at lunch or a full three-course dinner, the town's culinary scene has something to offer everybody. One of the most popular eateries in Kelso is The Cobbles Inn, which is a modern gastropub with a varied menu. Among the dishes that visitors can enjoy are Eyemouth fish and chips, beef pie, and southern fried chicken waffle. Elsewhere, The Waggon is an award-winning family restaurant that serves up freshly cooked and locally sourced produce. It has earned praise amongst customers on Google for its "reasonably priced" menu and "excellent customer service". If you are looking to stay in Kelso, there are plenty of options to choose from when it comes to accommodation. Popular choices include the Cross Keys Hotel and the Ednam House Hotel. For those interested in a day out in Kelso, the town can be reached in just over an hour from Edinburgh by car. More information about the town can be found on the Visit Kelso website.
