Best stocks to buy today: Ankush Bajaj's top three recommendations for 20 August

Indian equities extended their upward momentum on Tuesday, with the benchmark indices closing firmly in the green, supported by strong global cues and sectoral rotation. The Nifty 50 advanced 103.70 points or 0.42% to finish at 24,980.65, while the Sensex climbed 370.64 points or 0.46% to end the session at 81,644.39. Nifty Bank rose up 130.25 points or 0.23% to close at 55,865.15, reflecting selective buying interest in financial counters, though the upside remained capped. Top three stock picks by Ankush Bajaj for 20 August Why it's recommended: Godawari Power is showing strong bullish momentum, with the daily RSI at 70, MACD at 5 in positive territory, and ADX at 18, indicating trend strength. The stock has recently broken above major resistance at ₹210 with a head-and-shoulder breakout supported by 8.76M volume, suggesting continuation of the rally. Pattern: Head-and-shoulder breakout above ₹210 with high volume MACD: Positive at 5, confirming buy momentum RSI: 70, in bullish zone ADX: 18, signaling emerging trend strength Technical analysis: The breakout structure along with strong volume points to further upside toward ₹244. Risk factors: Market remains cautious despite strong earnings growth, as reflected in low P/E valuation. Sustainability of margins, cyclicality in steel/iron ore demand, and volatility in raw material costs may weigh on the stock. Buy at: ₹216 Target price: ₹244 Stop loss: ₹202 Why it's recommended: Motilal Oswal is showing strong bullish momentum, with the daily RSI at 62, MACD at 10.60 in positive territory, and ADX at 18, indicating a strengthening trend. The stock broke above ₹960 to a new high and is now retesting this level. Sustaining above ₹980 could lead to a rally above 1,000 in the near term. Pattern: Breakout above ₹960 and retesting support MACD: Positive at 10.60, confirming buy momentum RSI: 62, in bullish territory ADX: 18, signaling trend building Technical analysis: The retest structure indicates accumulation. A sustained close above ₹980 may trigger fresh momentum toward ₹1,010. Risk factors: Vulnerability to regulatory changes, interest rate cycles, and market volatility. Asset quality and dependence on capital markets pose additional business risks. Buy at: ₹959.38 Target price: ₹1,010 Stop loss: ₹932 Why it's recommended: Tata Motors is showing strong bullish signals, with the daily RSI at 62, MACD giving a positive crossover (value –3), and ADX at 25, indicating strong trend strength. On the 45-minute timeframe, the stock has broken above the upper channel of its trend line, pointing to a continuation rally. Pattern: Breakout above upper channel on intraday chart MACD: Positive crossover, signaling buy entry RSI: 62, in bullish zone ADX: 25, signaling strong trend Technical analysis: The breakout with supporting momentum indicates an upside move toward ₹735 in the near term. Risk factors: Auto sector cyclicality, global slowdown risks, rising raw material costs, and exposure to international markets (Jaguar Land Rover) may impact performance. Buy at: ₹700.25 Target price: ₹735 Stop loss: ₹682 How the market performed on 19 August On Tuesday, sectoral performance showcased resilience across cyclicals and consumption-driven spaces. Pharma (−0.34%), the Financial (−0.06%), and Healthcare (−0.05%) saw mild pressure, but strength from other segments overshadowed this weakness. Oil & Gas surged 1.66%, Auto rose 1.31%, and FMCG added 1.05%, highlighting a clear tilt toward cyclical and demand-led plays. In stock-specific action, Tata Motors shone with a 3.59% jump, followed by Adani Port which rallied 3.18%, and Reliance which gained 2.78%. However, a few heavyweights restricted the overall upside. Dr. Reddy slipped 1.47%, Bajaj Finance fell 1.07%, and Cipla shed 1.04%. Softer-than-expected US inflation data revived hopes of a September Federal Reserve rate cut, while domestic retail inflation cooling to an eight-year low of 1.55% lifted investor sentiment. These twin macro positives provided a strong cushion, allowing Nifty to comfortably hold above 24,600 despite sectoral divergences. Nifty technical analysis: daily & hourly The Nifty 50 continued its upward momentum on August 20, 2025, closing at 24,980 with gains of 103 points or 0.42 percent, extending its resilience after recent volatility. On the daily timeframe, the moving average setup still keeps the broader structure cautious, as the 20-day moving average at 24,747 trades slightly below the 40-day exponential moving average at 24,839. However, with price sustaining above both averages, the undertone is turning constructive. The daily RSI has strengthened further to 55, moving comfortably above the neutral 50 mark, while the MACD, though still negative at –83, continues to moderate, reflecting fading bearish pressure. This suggests that downside risks are reducing, and momentum is gradually shifting in favor of the bulls. The hourly chart paints a stronger picture. Here, the 20-hour moving average at 24,849 is firmly above the 40-hour exponential average at 24,765, reinforcing the bullish crossover seen in the previous session. Price action has sustained above this support cluster, confirming intraday strength. The hourly RSI at 65 reflects healthy bullish momentum, though edging closer to overbought territory, while the MACD remains strongly positive at +95, highlighting continued buying interest. This intraday structure signals that as long as Nifty holds above its short-term averages, dips are likely to attract demand. The derivatives setup also turned more supportive. Total put open interest has climbed to 14.70 crore against call open interest of 13.23 crore, giving a positive PE–CE difference of 1.47 crore contracts, shifting the trend bias to bullish. Put writers added 4.21 crore contracts compared to just 1.24 crore added on the call side, creating a positive OI change difference of 2.97 crore. The heaviest call open interest remains at the 25,000 strike, cementing it as the key resistance zone, while the highest addition was seen at the 25,500 strike, indicating supply is building higher up. On the put side, both maximum OI and the largest addition were seen at the 24,900 strike, suggesting traders are actively raising the support base closer to current levels. With global cues remaining neutral-to-supportive—US equities consolidating, crude steady near $65–66, and the rupee stable around 87.6—the domestic setup remains the key driver. Overall, the index is transitioning from cautious consolidation into a constructive recovery phase. As long as Nifty sustains above 24,900–24,850, the short-term bias remains positive, and a close above 25,000 could trigger a breakout rally towards 25,500. On the other hand, a slip back below 24,850–24,765 would weaken momentum and shift focus towards 24,680. In short, the bias has turned bullish, supports are shifting higher, and 25,000 remains the critical level to watch for a decisive breakout. Ankush Bajaj is a Sebi-registered research analyst. Govt plans factory clusters, big reforms to boost economy amid US tariff jolt

New Delhi: The government is weighing new measures to boost manufacturing while exploring alternative markets to offset the impact of US tariffs and make Indian products more competitive globally, according to two people familiar with the matter. The proposals under discussion include interest subventions, the development of manufacturing clusters near infrastructure hubs, and measures to attract more private capital, the people cited earlier said on the condition of anonymity. The measures are also expected to focus on creating jobs, boosting exports, and strengthening domestic consumption. 'Beyond targeted incentives, the government is weighing structural reforms, ranging from tweaks in the GST (goods and services tax) framework to fresh manufacturing pushes, to raise the sector's weight in GDP," said the first person. 'Importance is also being given to sectors like engineering, electronics, textiles, steel, and construction, with a sharper focus on 'Make in India' and 'Vocal for Local.' New PLI (production-linked incentive) schemes for heavy machinery in mining and construction are also under discussion to curb import dependence," this person added. Last week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a Reform Task Force in his Independence Day speech on 15 August, aimed at driving next-generation reforms to steer India toward a $10 trillion economy by 2047. India's manufacturing sector, which accounts for about one-sixth of the economy, is projected to expand by 3.8% in fiscal year 2026 (FY26), slower than the 4.3% estimated for FY25, according to the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE). The deceleration reflects the impact of US tariffs, moderating domestic demand, and a high base effect, with some sub-sectors expected to cool after last year's unsustainably strong growth. The US has imposed a 50% tariff on Indian goods entering the world's largest economy. The spokespersons of the ministries of finance, and commerce, and the Prime Minister's Office didn't respond to emailed queries. Meanwhile, new PLI schemes aimed at reducing import dependence have also been discussed. The Centre is looking to fire up manufacturing activities, a crucial engine of economic growth, the second person said. 'The government is also exploring the creation of factory clusters strategically located near major infrastructure projects, such as roads, railways, and ports, to create manufacturing hubs that boost logistics efficiency and generate large-scale employment," this person added. 'These clusters are aimed at raising manufacturing's share in India's GDP. Linking these clusters with key infrastructure projects will help create seamless value chains, drawing both domestic and foreign investment and giving a strong push to the economy," the person said. 'The cluster-based approach to manufacturing, where firms and industries operate within an integrated ecosystem, rests on strong theory and is backed by compelling global evidence," the person added. Experts say the government is adopting a broad-based strategy to strengthen Indian manufacturing and boost global competitiveness, with an emphasis on scale, value addition, and market diversification to reduce vulnerability to tariff shocks. 'The government is taking a comprehensive approach to strengthen fiscal measures, such as targeted incentives and credit support, which are being matched with non-fiscal steps, including logistics upgrades, regulatory simplification, skilling programs, and increased investment in research and innovation," said Hardik Shah, partner, Deloitte India. 'These initiatives are designed not merely as quick fixes but as part of a long-term vision of Viksit Bharat to build resilience, reduce external dependence, and position India as a reliable, trusted, and globally competitive manufacturing hub," Shah added.

Best stock recommendations today: MarketSmith India's top picks for 20 August

Indian equity benchmarks delivered a fourth consecutive session of gains, with BSE Sensex closing approximately 370 points higher, while Nifty50 ended just below 25,000, crossing 24,950. Optimism stemmed from strong performances by Reliance Industries and Bharti Airtel, which helped fuel the rally. The market's positive momentum was largely fueled by sustained foreign institutional investor (FII) buying and lingering optimism from last week's GST rationalization discussions. Two stock recommendations by MarketSmith India for 20 August: Buy: L&T Finance Holdings(current price: ₹ 217) Buy: Asahi India Glass Limited (current price: ₹870) Nifty 50 recap On Tuesday, Indian benchmark indices extended their rally, with both Nifty 50 and Sensex closing in the green for the fourth consecutive session. After a muted opening, the market extended its bullish momentum from the previous session and ended just below 25,000. The broader market outperformed the frontliners, with the BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices gaining around 1% each. On the sectoral front, oil and gas, media, and auto stocks led the gain, while pharma was the sole laggard. Notable stock movers included Tata Motors, Adani Ports, and Reliance Industries among the top gainers, while Dr. Reddy's Labs and Cipla were among the day's biggest losers. The overall market breadth was highly positive, with a strong advance-decline ratio, suggesting broad-based buying interest across the board. On the technical front, Nifty encountered resistance at its 50-DMA, which remains a key hurdle for further upside. The relative strength index (RSI) has recovered from oversold territory and recently broke above a downward-sloping trendline, now consolidating near the neutral 55 level—indicating improving momentum. Meanwhile, the MACD has turned positive, though it continues to trade below both its signal line and the zero axis, suggesting that while downside pressures have eased, a sustained confirmation of trend reversal is still awaited. According to O'Neil's methodology market direction, market status has been downgraded to an "Uptrend Under Pressure" as Nifty breached its "50-DMA" and the "distribution day count" is at four. The index continues to encounter strong resistance near its 50-DMA, with 25,000 and the 50-DMA is likely to remain the key resistance zone in the near term. A decisive close above this hurdle would be a constructive technical development and could open the path for an upside move toward 25,250–25,350. On the downside, immediate support is placed at 24,700, where a breach could negate the current recovery attempt and reintroduce selling pressure. Below this, further supports are seen at 24,600 and 24,350, making these critical levels to watch for the index's next directional move. How did Nifty Bank Perform Yesterday? On Tuesday, Bank Nifty began on a weak note and witnessed volatile movement in the early hours of trade. However, buying interest at lower levels provided positive momentum, helping the index close in the green. It formed a bullish candle, signaling strength, though it faced resistance near its 21-DMA, placed at 25,911. Throughout the session, it opened at 55,622.30 and moved within a narrow range of 55,965.55 to 55,608.15. Eventually, it closed at 55,865.15, sustaining its intraday gains. The price action reflects resilience, though a breakout above the 21-DMA will be crucial for further upside. The RSI has inched higher from the previous session and is now positioned near 50, indicating improving momentum. Meanwhile, the MACD has turned positive after several weeks of a negative crossover, though it continues to trend below the central line, signaling caution. According to O'Neil's methodology market direction, Bank Nifty remains in an 'Uptrend Under Pressure." In this context, investors should maintain a selective exposure to quality stocks while emphasizing disciplined risk management to safeguard capital and capture only high-conviction opportunities. Bank Nifty closed the session in positive territory but faced resistance near its 21-DMA. A sustained move above this level could open the path toward the next hurdle at the 50-DMA, placed around 56,330. For bullish momentum to strengthen, the index must decisively cross and hold above the 50-DMA in the coming sessions. On the downside, immediate support lies at the 100-DMA near 55,239. A breach below this level may trigger heightened volatility and increase the risk of further downside.
