US envoy to finalise Gaza aid corridor in Europe trip

The United States said on Tuesday that a top envoy will travel to Europe for talks on a ceasefire and finalising an aid "corridor" for war-ravaged Gaza, where authorities said people are dying of starvation.
Steve Witkoff, US President Donald Trump's globe-trotting negotiator, will head this week to a European destination for talks on Gaza, according to American officials, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Clarifying an earlier statement, officials said Witkoff may travel after Europe to the Middle East to continue diplomacy.
Witkoff comes with "a strong hope that we will come forward with another ceasefire as well as a humanitarian corridor for aid to flow, that both sides have in fact agreed to," State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce told reporters.
Bruce declined to give further details on the corridor.
She did not say how the diplomacy would relate to the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), an initiative backed by Israel and the United States that has seen chaotic scenes of troops firing on hungry Palestinians racing for food.
The UN on Tuesday said Israeli forces had killed more than 1,000 Palestinians trying to get food aid since the GHF began its operations in late May, with most near the foundation's sites. (AFP)

The Wall Street Journal is set to plead not guilty in a lawsuit against Selina Cheng, Hong Kong Journalists Association (HKJA) chairperson, who accuses the American newspaper of unlawful dismissal after she took the helm of the press union. Acting Principal Magistrate David Cheung on Wednesday reserved four days in December for the trial of the case between Cheng and her former employer, after the legal representative of Dow Jones Publishing Co. (Asia) Inc, the parent company of the Journal, indicated that the company would plead not guilty. The magistrate will meet both parties on November 7 for the media company to enter a formal plea, as well as finalise the admitted facts of the case for trial. The four-day trial is scheduled to start on December 18. Shortly after Cheng was fired from the Journal in July last year, she told reporters that she had been informed her position at the press union would be 'incompatible' with her job and that she had not had permission to take on the role. A spokesperson for Dow Jones told HKFP at the time that the company would not comment on 'specific individuals.' They also said that the Journal 'has been and continues to be a fierce and vocal advocate for press freedom in Hong Kong and around the world.' The HKJA chairperson filed a complaint with the Labour Department in November, after which it consulted the Department of Justice (DoJ) about whether to prosecute the Journal. The DoJ confirmed last month that it would not intervene in the case, as Cheng proceeded with private prosecution. Hong Kong's Employment Ordinance stipulates that it is an offence for an employer to prevent an employee from undertaking trade union membership and activities. An employer is also liable to conviction if they dismiss an employee for exercising those rights. Cheng was first elected chairperson of the HKJA at the union's annual general meeting on June 22 last year, with 100 votes in favour and two against. A new executive committee was also elected at the meeting. She was re-elected union chief last month. The HKJA, founded in 1968, has come under fire from Hong Kong authorities and state-backed media since the city was wracked by months-long protests and unrest in 2019. The press group has been accused of smearing the police force, allowing 'fake journalists' to join, and protecting protesters.

Taiwan donation vow to Israeli settlement is cynical and foolish
The cynicism is breathtaking. Or maybe it's just foolishness. With Taiwanese leader William Lai Ching-te and his minions at the Democratic Progressive Party, it's often hard to tell. Advertisement While Israel is busy committing genocide in Gaza, and Jewish settlers and the military are running rampant across the occupied West Bank, Taipei has pledged to donate to an Israeli settlement for a health project there. At least 964 Palestinians in the West Bank have been killed between the start of the Gaza war in October 2023 and the middle of this month. About 1,400 Palestinian homes have either been demolished or face being torn down, according to the UN Human Rights Office. But rest assured the health project won't be serving Palestinians, nor has there been any pretence that it would. Now, Israel doesn't need the donation. The GDP per capita of Taiwan and that of Israel are comparable, with the island's only slightly higher. Couldn't Taiwan at least donate to some project inside Israel proper, and thus avoid any controversy? But that would be a waste of time for Israel. The whole point, of course, is to make Taipei donate inside the illegal military occupation! Why? Because the donation, if and when it is made, would be interpreted as Taiwan's tacit endorsement of the illegal Israeli occupation. Advertisement However, it would also be a direct breach of international law. The Israeli military occupation is universally recognised as illegal. A year ago, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued an advisory opinion stating that all states must prevent trade and investment relations that assist in the maintenance of the unlawful occupation by Israel.
