Assault trial begins for Duff Friesen, former principal of Saskatoon's Legacy Christian Academy
The assault trial for a former principal of a private Christian school began at Saskatoon's Court of King's Bench on Monday.
Duff Arthur Friesen, 67, is facing 11 charges of assault with a weapon.
He is being tried on the first four charges now, and the other seven charges (by different complainants) in September.
The alleged incidents happened while Friesen was a principal at the then-called Christian Centre Academy.
The school — operated by Mile Two Church — rebranded as Legacy Christian Academy, and most-recently as Valour Academy.
In 2021 and 2022, former students went to police alleging physical abuse by staff.
Friesen was working as a principal at Prince Albert's Regent Academy when he turned himself in to Saskatoon police on June 15, 2023.
On Nov. 16, 2023 Friesen pleaded not guilty to the 11 counts of assault with a weapon.
Jury selection for Friesen's trial began Monday.
Justice Natasha Crooks granted Friesen's request for a publication ban.
The publication ban prevents reporting of all evidence, lawyers' arguments, exhibits filed and possible victim-impact statements.
Journalists are allowed to report on the court process, the verdict, and any sentence imposed — if Friesen is found guilty.
The publication ban aims to protect the integrity of Friesen's second jury trial scheduled for Sept. 15.

Police look for suspect in stabbing incident
Windsor Police are on the lookout for a male suspect following an early morning stabbing incident on June 6. At approximately 1 p.m., police were called to Wyandotte Street West and Church Street where they found a 24-year-old male with two stab wounds to the body and another 24-year-old male with a facial wound. The third male on the scene was unharmed. After investigating, police found a verbal altercation occurred between the group of three males and the unknown suspect. The suspect allegedly sprayed the group with an unknown noxious substance, stabbed one male, assaulted the other and fled the scene. Both males were brought to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The case remains under investigation.

Montreal police searching for missing man, 72, with cognitive impairment
Montreal police are asking the public for help locating a 72-year-old man with cognitive impairment who has difficulty navigating. Richard Bastien is described as white, five feet 11 inches tall and 170 pounds. He has brown eyes and grey hair. He speaks both English and French. Bastien was last seen Friday afternoon at around 2 p.m. at his residence in the Sud-Ouest. He mainly uses a wheelchair or walks to get around, police say. Bastien doesn't have access to his medication, and investigators are concerned for his health and safety. He was last seen wearing black pants and a blue, plaid shirt.

Toronto police are searching for a man who they say allegedly threatened a stranger with a gun in North York's Flemingdon Park area Thursday afternoon. Officers say they were called to the St. Dennis Drive and Deauville Lane area at around 4:30 p.m. for reports of a person with a firearm. It's alleged that the suspect approached the victim and began a conversation before revealing what appeared to be a firearm tucked in his waistband and threatening to shoot. 'The suspect then fled the area and was last seen travelling northbound on Deauville Lane on foot,' police wrote in Saturday's news release. Police say 'he was wearing a black facemask, black swaeter, blue/black pants and black shoes." Police are urging the public not to approach the man if spotted, and are asking anyone with information to come forward or call 911 immediately if seen.
