Russell Westbrook Gets Unfortunate Update on NBA Future

NBA free agency has hit a standstill as the restricted free agent market holds everything up.
Four restricted free agents — Jonathan Kuminga, Cam Thomas, Josh Giddey and Quentin Grimes — have all been unable to reach an agreement with their current teams on either a new deal or a sign-and-trade. Thus, just about everyone else has been forced to wait.

One of those players happens to be a nine-time All-Star and nine-time All NBA Teamer in future Hall of Famer Russell Westbrook. After spending the 2024-25 season with the Denver Nuggets, the 2016-17 NBA MVP is patiently waiting to find his next home.
But that opportunity may not arise any time soon.

OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA - MAY 05: Russell Westbrook #4 of the Denver Nuggets looks on during the first half of Round Two Game One of the 2025 NBA Playoffs against the Oklahoma City Thunder at Paycom Center on May 05, 2025 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. MoreNBA insider Jake Fischer recently said on a Bleacher Report live stream that Westbrook's NBA future appears to be down to one team — and that team may not even be interested in bringing in him.
"We are still waiting to see what other moves could come in Sacramento before the Kings try to bring Russell Westbrook in," Fischer said. "That's been the one home all along that we really have looked at for Russell Westbrook, and that's still the home that I have heard earlier this week is the most likely outcome for Russell Westbrook, if he's gonna be in the NBA at all.
"Honestly, that's really the only home we've heard for him."
Westbrook is coming off a productive season with the Nuggets in which he averaged 13.3 points, 6.1 assists and 4.9 rebounds per game across 75 contests. While he played well in his off-the-bench role, it's clear his game is not valued as highly as it used to be — especially at this stage of his career.

Westbrook is someone who needs the ball in his hands to impact a game, and at this point, few teams want to give a 36-year-old point guard an expanded role. Westbrook can also have an erratic style of play at times, turning the ball over and putting up shots in short bursts.
Last year with Denver, Westbrook shot 44.9 percent from the field and 32.3 percent from deep — slightly above his career averages of 43.9 percent and 30.5 percent.
Overall, Westbrook has played 17 seasons in the league, spending time with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers and Nuggets.
If he were to play an 18th season, it appears it would be with the Kings — unless another team suffers an injury to their backup point guard and wants to bring him in.

Heat Legend Sends Message About Draymond Green's NBA Career
One of the things that will be remembered when Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green retires from the NBA is his ability to win. Green wasn't always a flashy player, and he doesn't boast a mind-boggling physique that gives him an advantage against his opponents. However, he makes the most out of the chances he gets. What separates him from other stars around the league is being one of the best teammates. In his time playing with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, the star forward elevated the team's backcourt with his intelligence on the floor. Green's sacrifice isn't easy for any star to do. However, he was willing to do the necessary things to help his team win, which is why he's a four-time champion. NBA legend Dwyane Wade understands that. Wade Honored Green's Legacy On the latest episode of his podcast, "Wy Network," the former Miami Heat star recognized what makes Green special. He also honored the legacy of the 6-foot-6 forward, mentioning how he's a winner in the NBA. "I just think that if someone wants to argue about Draymond's individual ranking, they just want to argue," Wade said. "...Draymond Green's career would not be talked about him as an individual player. It would be talked about him as a winner, as a team player, as a leader, all these things. Like, if you're a Draymond fan, you can't care what Draymond is ranked as an individual player because he doesn't go out with that individual mentality." Some fans may have a different opinion on Green. However, his peers respect him for the work he's put in as the heart and soul of the Warriors, which is why they've won four titles with story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 19, 2025, where it first appeared in the NBA section. Warriors Predicted to Trade Jonathan Kuminga to Suns for $64 Million Trio
Warriors Predicted to Trade Jonathan Kuminga to Suns for $64 Million Trio originally appeared on Athlon Sports. While things have quieted down a ton since the end of the Las Vegas Summer League, one storyline has remained as the largest in the NBA. That would be the ongoing saga between the Golden State Warriors and restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga. It has been reported that Kuminga has turned down the Warriors' contract offer and both sides are unwilling to budge to get a deal done which has caused Golden State to miss out on multiple free agent targets. Of course, Kuminga fell out of Steve Kerr's rotation last season and his role next season is uncertain which has led to reports that he has no desire to remain in Golden State. While that may be the case, there has not been a ton of outside interest from other teams regarding the young forward, though the Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns have both reportedly offered him a contract, though they have failed to meet the Warriors' high asking price to acquire him via a sign-and-trade. Mock trade sends Jonathan Kuminga to Suns Because of this, FanSided's Maxwell Ogden recently released a new mock trade that would see the Suns land Kuminga from the Warriors in exchange for three players and draft capital. In the trade, the Suns would send Nick Richards, Oso Ighodaro, Royce O'Neale and a future first-round pick to the Warriors in exchange for Kuminga. For the Warriors, this trade would be a solid one for them to pull off as they would add two veterans in Richards and O'Neale to upgrade their depth, which they have failed to do thus far this summer. Richards would be a massive upgrade to their center position and would likely become their starting center next season inside next to Draymond Green. O'Neale would give Golden State another solid 3-and-D player off the bench that would provide the team with some much-needed scoring in their second unit. Golden State would also acquire a young big man in Ighodaro who impressed last season in his limited minutes and could become a key piece of the Warriors' future after Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler and Green retire. Despite this, Golden State may still want more in return for Kuminga but they may be forced to lower their asking price if they want to move him this offseason as they try to chase another title next season. Stephen Curry Wants Undrafted Guard Back With the Warriors: Insider
The Golden State Warriors have yet to make a move in the free agent market. They have dedicated their time and effort to making a contract for restricted free agent forward Jonathan Kuminga. The two sides have not agreed on anything yet and are willing to move on from each other. Aside from Kuminga, however, there are other free agents to whom the Warriors have not paid attention. One of them is undrafted guard Gary Payton II. The 6-foot-2 guard is a fan favorite and wants to re-sign with the team that allowed him to succeed. However, the contract talks with Kuminga have hindered Payton II from having conversations with the organization. There is Mutual Interest in Bringing Payton Back According to NBA insider Brandon "Scoop B" Robinson, All-Star guard Stephen Curry wants the Warriors to bring Payton II back. Given that he's arguably the best player Golden State has ever had, the organization could pay attention to Curry's request. "Payton II, who played an instrumental role in Golden State's 2022 championship run, also wants to return. The mutual interest is there. And when Curry co-signs it, the conversation shifts from possibility to priority," Robinson wrote. Before finding a haven with the Warriors, Payton II bounced around the league, playing for the Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Lakers and Washington Wizards. The son of former NBA player Gary Payton played a significant role in the Golden State's 2022 championship run. His defensive tenacity was a perfect fit for Curry's offensive game. Even though he's undersized, Payton II isn't a liability on the defensive end, as he can match up against anyone on the story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 19, 2025, where it first appeared in the NBA section.
