Padres' Bogaerts loses homer on fan interference call, manager Mike Shildt ejected in 4-3 loss
The call turned out to be critical because the Padres lost 4-3.
Bogaerts hit a flyball to left field that appeared to bounce out of Heliot Ramos' glove and over the fence as two fans, including one in a Giants shirt, reached for it. The ball might have clipped one of the fans' arms and, after a lengthy review, the home run call was overturned and Bogaerts was called out. Shildt was ejected immediately when he came out of the dugout.
Fans booed the rest of the inning.
'No contact. It was a big run. Huge,' Shildt said. 'Listen, I don't bark at the league a lot, but the definition that we got from replay was that it was clear that there was some impediment that took place. Clearly, he didn't touch the baseball. ... And if it's so clear, how come it takes 2 minutes, 40 seconds to figure it out? What are you looking for? If it's so clear, overturn it early and if it's not, it's a home run.
'That's just really disappointing to go that long and have to come up with a conclusion that's not conclusive to overturn a home run. It cost us an opportunity to win a baseball game. ... I had a lot of time on my hands and if you can find an angle where the fan touched the baseball, I'd like to see it.'
Ramos wasn't surprised the call was overturned.
'I did think I had it easier than that, but whenever I was about to catch it, I saw his arm was over me, kind of him, so I'm guessing it hit the arm or something. I saw the replay and it only shows the guy on the bottom, it doesn't show the guy on the top, but he was like literally over me and his whole body was across the wall. It just clipped the finger a little bit. Before the ball got to my glove, he was already with his hands up.'
Ramos said the fan blocked his view 'a little bit because I saw his shadow coming on top of me so I was kind of confused about it.'
Giants manager Bob Melvin said it appeared the fan 'reached over. I think it just nicked him. Regardless, if your hand's over it could affect his vision, too. You don't see that call often but I think it was the right one.'
Ramos hit a leadoff homer against Nestor Cortes, one of three homers within the first five batters that gave the Giants a 4-0 lead.

The Indianapolis Colts have chosen their starting quarterback for the 2025 NFL season. It will not be Anthony Richardson. The Colts named Daniel Jones their Week 1 starter, the team announced Tuesday. Jones signed a one-year, $14 million deal with the Colts during the offseason. His "prove-it" pact came after he went 2-8 in 10 starts for the New York Giants, completing 63.3% of his passes for 2,070 yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions, before being released and signing with the Minnesota Vikings a backup. Now, Jones will return to a starting role with the Colts after outdueling Richardson during Indianapolis' preseason quarterback competition. That will create questions about Richardson's future with the team and what might be next for the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. What's next for Anthony Richardson? Richardson will open the 2025 NFL season as the Colts' backup quarterback behind Jones, but it may be hard for him to earn back the starting role. Colts coach Shane Steichen gave a strong commitment to Jones when announcing him as the team's starting quarterback. "He's the starting QB for the season," Steichen told reporters of Jones. "I don't want to have a short leash on that." That leaves Richardson facing a murky future in Indianapolis, though it's worth noting Colts general manager Chris Ballard spent most of the offseason preaching patience with Richardson. Ballard was asked as the Colts opened training camp whether the 23-year-old was facing a make-or-break year. He intimated the quarterback still had plenty of time to prove himself at the NFL level. "Do you think people regret Baker Mayfield's timeline? Sam Darnold's timeline?" Ballard asked, rhetorically. "Sometimes you gotta have a little a patience with a guy and let them grow through things." Ballard then proceeded to express confidence in Richardson and outlined the key for the young quarterback's season would be showing he's on the right developmental path. "If you think, 'Hey, he's on the right trajectory,' why are you going to flush him just because people outside think you should flush him? I don't agree with that," Ballard told reporters. "I think we need to give Anthony every chance to be the best he can be, and I think he can be really good." But Ballard also added "things have got to come together" for Richardson. It isn't clear whether they have enough for the Colts to feel confident about the signal-caller's future. That could lead Richrdson to eventually be jettisoned by the Colts, much like when the San Francisco 49ers traded Trey Lance just two seasons making him the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Anthony Richardson trade destinations If the Colts do follow the 49ers model and cut bait with Richardson, several NFL teams would likely hold an interest in acquiring the potential-packed passer. Below are a handful of the best fits for the hyper-athletic quarterback. New York Jets Aaron Glenn has emphasized mobility in his quarterback room by signing Justin Fields. Richardson would be another signal-caller with athletic upside to compete for playing time with the Jets. New Orleans Saints The Saints just spent a second-round pick on Tyler Shough, but he's battling Spencer Rattler for the starting job ahead of the 2025 season. Richardson has more upside than both, so adding him to the room could be a decent gamble for first-year coach Kellen Moore. Las Vegas Raiders Geno Smith is 34 years old, so the Riaders could use a successor for him. Pete Carroll has a history of targeting athletic players in Seattle and may be intrigued by Richardson's upper-echelon mobility. Los Angeles Rams Sean McVay has proven he can get the most out of quarterbacks during his time with the Rams. Landing in Los Angeles and developing behind Matthew Stafford could be the best opportunity for Richardson to tap into his potential. Dallas Cowboys The Cowboys have traded for athletic quarterbacks like Trey Lance and Joe Milton III in recent seasons to develop behind Dak Prescott. Richardson is cut from a similar cloth, so Jerry Jones could once again consider swinging for the fences. Buffalo Bills It's fun to imagine what type of leap forward Richardson could make learning behind Josh Allen, another quarterback with elite mobility and arm strength. Colts QB depth chart Barring a trade, Richardson will likely be Indianapolis' backup quarterback to start the 2025 NFL season. He completed 8 of 14 passes for 84 yards across his first two preseason games and added a 9-yard scramble in limited playing time. That should allow him to stay ahead of the two challengers behind him on Indianapolis' depth chart. Commanders sign former Seahawks RT George Fant
A former Seattle Seahawk has found a new home. Early on Tuesday morning, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that right tackle George Fant will be signing with the Washington Commanders. Fant was a Seahawks from 2016-2019, and once again in 2024 - unfortunately, his season last year was marred by injuries and he was limited to only two games. Now, the Commanders will become his fourth NFL organization. Fant will reunite with former Seahawks teammates Bobby Wagner, Jacob Martin, Nick Bellore and even long snapper Tyler Ott. We often jokingly refer to the Commanders as the "other Washington" but these days it appears this statement is more fact than humor. Fant was a solid starter for the Seahawks, and would have been reliable depth behind Abe Lucas. Sadly, the aforementioned injuries sort of spoiled his second stint in Seattle. We at Seahawks Wire wish Fant the best of luck in our nation's capital city for the 2025 campaign. Fant will face his former team in Week 9 as the Seahawks and Commanders will face off on Sunday Night Football. ESPN analyst Monica McNutt may have lost her hosting privileges after making an embarrassing mistake on "First Take." At the very least, there might be friction behind the scenes. McNutt joined ESPN in 2019 as an ACC Network analyst. Two years later, she started making regular appearances on "SportsCenter" and "NBA Today." She also became a key figure for the network's coverage of the WNBA and women's college basketball. When she's not part of ESPN's national coverage, she's calling games on the radio for the New York Knicks. Prior to becoming an analyst for ESPN, McNutt made appearances on Fox Sports 1, CBS Sports Network and Turner/NBA TV. She was even included in NBC's coverage of the 2021 Summer Olympics. So what went wrong for McNutt? On last Friday's episode of "First Take," she didn't realize special guest Druski was wearing a Barry Sanders jersey. She assumed his jersey was affiliated with Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders. "It's a blast to have you here, thank you so much for joining us. The jersey, obviously, ties to Shedeur Sanders," McNutt told Druski. The popular comedian quickly replied, "No, no, no, no, no. This is, uh, Barry Sanders." McNutt could lose the locker room at ESPN. According to OutKick, "countless ESPN staffers" were embarrassed by McNutt's mistake. "Since Saturday, OutKick has heard from countless ESPN staffers about the segment. Many prefaced their reactions with, "I like Monica, but …" Still, they were embarrassed—for her, for the producers, for management, and for the ESPN brand," Bobby Burack wrote. "Barry Sanders is one of the greatest players in NFL history. McNutt didn't know who he is. That's not a blunder. That's a lack of knowledge, history, and preparation. It's inexcusable." Some fans called out ESPN over the weekend, declaring that McNutt should be fired. ESPN has McNutt under contract for a few more years. Back in October 2024, ESPN agreed to a new contract with McNutt. As part of that agreement, she has received an expanded role for the network's NBA and WNBA coverage. If ESPN wants to avoid causing any controversy this fall, McNutt should stick to covering basketball. Besides, the network has plenty of other analysts to cover the NFL, including Ryan Clark, Dan Orlovsky and Marcus Spears.
