
Northern Lights Update: 15 States Might See Aurora Borealis Friday Night

NOAA forecast a Kp index of five on a scale of nine, suggesting the northern lights have a minimal chance of being seen as far south as Iowa, with a higher chance of seeing aurora borealis in states along the Canadian border.
Periods of minor geomagnetic storms are expected late Friday and early Saturday because of 'influences' from a coronal mass ejection emitted from the sun on Aug. 5, according to NOAA.
Calmer auroral activity is forecast for Saturday and Sunday night with a maximum Kp index of about four and just over three expected, respectively, according to NOAA's three-day outlook.
Northern Canada and Alaska will have the highest likelihood of viewing the phenomenon, once the sun sets in the state. A lesser chance is forecast for parts of Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. If using a regular camera, photography experts told National Geographic it's best to use a wide-angle lens, an aperture or F-stop of four or less and a focus set to the furthest possible setting. More people in the U.S. have been exposed to northern lights displays in the last year as activity peaked on the sun's surface. This peak, a 'solar maximum,' occurs throughout the sun's 11-year cycle alongside a 'solar minimum' and indicates an increase in solar events like coronal mass ejections and solar flares. The swirling, colorful lights of the aurora borealis are created from electrons of these events colliding with molecules of oxygen and nitrogen in the Earth's atmosphere, causing them to become 'excited' before releasing energy in the form of light. Getting Closer To AI Internet Protocols
It's an important time for connectivity with artificial intelligence. You might say that 2024 was the year of finding out about AI's agentic capabilities – although you could maybe argue that most execution has been within the last six months, 2024 was a blizzard of recognizing benchmarks – wait, AI can do that? And then: it can do that too? Now that we know all of this, as agents are getting more deployable and more frequently deployed, it's more relevant to look at how they will work, how they will connect to each other. I've written before about how people at MIT are pioneering the NANDA (Networked Agents and Decentralized AI) protocol for connecting online AI agents, but to be honest, now seems like a better time to be scrutinizing these kinds of plans. Sure, the work on NANDA takes place in the context of other protocols like A2A and, famously, MCP, but since those other projects are tied to leading AI companies, why not involve academia in something so central to future interface design? Partnerships and Coordination MIT is also assisted by many partners in setting up the idea of NANDA to handle future intelligence Internet traffic. Here's what Dr. Harrick Vin at Tata Consultancy Services has to say: We are rapidly entering a world where AI systems will be built using a decentralized network of AI agents, potentially traversing organizational boundaries. The design of such systems demands open protocols to discover, build trust, integrate, orchestrate, and exchange value among a network of intelligent agents. TCS is excited to support and contribute to MIT's decentralized AI program NANDA aimed at realizing this vision. Other businesses, like Mitsubishi Electric, are also involved. Thoughts on Implementation I saw an interesting kind of comparison from Abhishek Singh, someone close to this project, at a lightning talk presentation at Imagination in Action's event in April. Singh talked about how humans are a 'social animal' and how that helped them to stand out from other primates. (Not that monkeys aren't social, but…) What I thought was interesting was a chart, comparing inputs and components of the success of the species, to the development of the Internet, and then to AI… Note how the AI part just has ? ? ? Eventually, Singh populates this part of the chart with things like MCP, Coupon Protocol, and registry design, showing how we might be able to evolve our technology to accommodate all of those intelligent agents that will be running around on the web, doing so many things on our behalf. As for coupons, here's how Singh breaks down this concept: 'In the Internet stack, we have the website, (and) we have hyperlinks that allow us to go from one page, one web page, to another web page, and so on,' he says. 'That hyperlink creates the web out of fragmented websites. Now we can index the web. We can search on the web. We can build reputation engines, we can build Google search, and so on.' Then he discusses the similarity to coupons: 'What does it mean to build a hyperlink for the agents? We have a proposed protocol for this, this notion of our concept of coupons … these coupons are verifiable. We'll go into the details of privacy and authenticity later. But these interaction coupons are allowing you to capture the faces of how the knowledge is spreading across these areas. And as I said, you can use these coupons, then, to build services on top, which are replication, search, context, and so on.' Midway through explaining all of this, he spoke to some of the enduring obstacles of getting all of this together: 'There are some practical challenges in the world of agents that you have to acknowledge,' he said, 'and we have to understand that genius won't solve them.' At the same time, Singh suggested, progress has been made. 'We are just getting started,' he said. 'I would say we have made two contributions. One is (the) protocol and architecture layer, and the other contribution is actual application to demonstrate the potential. So the applications are very opinionated, when the protocols are very lightweight and flexible.' More on NANDA Other lightning talks on the subject included Andrea Ridi talking about his years of work on startups, and the need to equip agents with what they need to function. My colleague Ramesh Raskar weighed in, too, as he's been very involved in NANDA, and a researcher named Cameron Dennis went over the work of some colleagues on a company called NEAR that is working on NANDA-related concepts. Looking at all of this, you start to get a picture of how this is going to work. Early speculative notions of web3, the semantic web, were often limited to a protocol like JSON for code porting, but now we have AI agents actually doing things online. How could that not be a game-changer for a previously established worldwide global network that runs so much of our societies across the board? Stay tuned as a new Internet continues to develop.

Residents in Alaska's capital city prepare for possible glacial flooding
Alaska Flooding-Glacial Dam ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Residents and officials in Alaska's capital city prepared Friday for the possibility of glacial flooding that in past years has swept away houses, swamped several hundred homes and eroded the river fed by the popular Mendenhall Glacier. The state, federal, city and tribal officials who would run an incident command center during any flooding held a briefing to outline steps and to issue pleas to the public to be prepared. The threat of so-called glacier outburst flooding has become an annual concern in parts of Juneau since 2011. The Mendenhall Glacier — a thinning, retreating glacier that is a major tourist attraction in southeast Alaska — acts as a dam for a basin that fills each spring and summer with rainwater and snowmelt. The basin itself was left behind when a smaller, nearby glacier retreated. When the water in the basin creates enough pressure, it forces its way under or around the ice dam created by the Mendenhall Glacier, entering Mendenhall Lake and eventually the Mendenhall River. The water level in the basin as of Friday stood at 1,353 feet (412 meters) and continues to rise, said Nicole Ferrin with the National Weather Service. It's just 15 feet (1.5 meters) from topping the ice dam. The basin has been rising at an unpredictable rate, so there is no way to pinpoint when water would go over the top, she said. 'Some days when there's no rain, it only rises by a foot (0.30 meters),' she said. 'Other days when there is heavy rain or a lot of sunshine, it rises by 4 feet (1.22 meters), so it's a variable.' In some years, there has been limited flooding of streets or properties near the lake or river. But 2023 and 2024 marked successive years of record flooding, with the river last August cresting at 15.99 feet (4.9 meters), about 1 foot (0.3 meters) over the prior record set a year earlier, and flooding extending farther into the Mendenhall Valley. Last year, nearly 300 residences were damaged in the flooding. Capital City Fire/Rescue Chief Rich Etheridge warned people to stay away during flood stages because logs and other debris in the river can put would-be rescuers 'at extreme peril.' Once the water tops the dam, the city will set up a hotline where people can get information. A large flood event can release up to 15 billion gallons of water, according to the University of Alaska Southeast and Alaska Climate Adaptation Science Center. That's the equivalent of nearly 23,000 Olympic-size swimming pools. During last year's flood, the flow rate in the rushing Mendenhall River was about half that of Niagara Falls, the researchers say. City officials responded to concerns from property owners this year by working with state, federal and tribal entities to install a temporary levee along roughly 2.5 miles of riverbank in an attempt to guard against widespread flooding. The installation of about 10,000, four-foot (1.2-meter) tall barriers is intended to protect more than 460 properties from flood levels similar to last year, said Nate Rumsey, deputy director with the city's engineering and public works department. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is at the start of what's expected to be a yearslong process of studying conditions in the region and examining options for a more permanent solution. The timeline has angered some residents, who say it's unreasonable. Outburst floods are expected to continue as long as the Mendenhall Glacier acts as an ice dam to seal off the basin, which could span another 25 to 60 years, according to the university and science center researchers. ___ Associated Press writer Becky Bohrer in Juneau contributed to this report.

Trump administration targets Harvard's patents
The Trump administration is opening a new front in its battle with Harvard University on the issue of patents, marking a new escalation with the elite school that could result in the loss of additional federal funding or intellectual property rights. In a Friday letter to Harvard President Alan Garber obtained by CNN, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick writes that the Trump administration believes the university is 'in breach of the statutory, regulatory, and contractual requirements tied to Harvard's federal funded research programs and intellectual property arising therefrom, including patents.' The Commerce Department, Lutnick said, is issuing an 'immediate comprehensive review' of Harvard's federally funded research programs. The secretary said the administration was also initiating the 'march-in' process under a law called the Bayh-Dole Act that lets universities patent research and inventions. That means that if Harvard has failed to disclose or patent its inventions, the federal government could take ownership of the patents or grant third-party licenses. The letter, first reported by Reuters, marks the latest action by the Trump administration to exert pressure on the school. The Trump administration has frozen billions of dollars in federal funding for research and has targeted the school's ability to host international students. Harvard and the Trump administration are currently embroiled in a pair of lawsuits. Still, officials remain optimistic about the prospects of a deal with Harvard to restore funding to the school and drop lawsuits and investigations. The Trump administration has recently struck multimillion-dollar agreements with Columbia and Brown universities. 'While there's a lawsuit pending with Harvard, and I'm sure that lawsuit will play out, I do hope that Harvard will continue to come to the table with negotiations. Those talks are continuing, and we'd like to have a resolution there, outside of the courts,' Education Secretary Linda McMahon said in a phone interview with CNN last month. Harvard has sent some signals it is willing to work with the Trump administration, including last month when The Harvard Crimson reported that websites for Harvard College centers serving minority and LGBTQ students and women disappeared. The White House welcomed that development, viewing it as a goodwill gesture that one official described as 'good news.' McMahon last month also pointed to the departure of the heads of the university's Middle Eastern Studies center as a positive step.
