Krasnodar celebrate first Russian league title
KRASNODAR : FC Krasnodar won their first Russian Premier League title yesterday, halting Zenit St Petersburg's six-year winning streak, but are unlikely to play in Europe next season.
Russia's national team and club sides were banned from European competitions after Moscow invaded Ukraine in 2022, prompting numerous sanctions.
FC Krasnodar, from the city in southern Russia, were founded in 2008 by the local retail magnate and billionaire Sergei Galitsky.
They finished second in the Russian Premier League last year and reached the Russian Cup final in 2014 and 2023, losing both on penalties.
Krasnodar beat Dinamo Moscow 3-0 yesterday to finish one point ahead of Zenit St Petersburg.
They have Russian international goalkeeper Stanislav Agkatsev and striker Alexander Chernikov in their squad, along with Armenian midfielder and team captain Eduard Spertsyan.
Colombian striker Jhon Cordoba opened the scoring in the title-clinching game against Dinamo Moscow.
Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin said last month that Russian clubs would be readmitted into the continent's competitions once the war in Ukraine is over.
'Of course, it's regrettable. But bring on the Champions League, we will show you!' said Krasnodar fan Andrey Bragin outside the club's Ozon Arena stadium.
The black-and-green team, also known as the Bulls, have experience of playing in Europe, finishing third in their Champions League group in 2020 after facing Chelsea, Sevilla and Rennes.
Krasnodar manager Murad Musayev, 41, said he was overwhelmed with joy at winning the Russian title.
'I hope we will return to the Champions League,' he said.

'But (I) never (was) fully able to get back to maybe my goal and my target. That was the main reason for the decision, but over the next weeks and months, it'll be a nice time to reflect, do different things, spend more time at home with family and just sort of appreciate the journey.' Guirassy saves Dortmund blushes with late winner against third-tier Essen in German Cup
ESSEN, Aug 19 — Borussia Dortmund needed a superb finish by forward Serhou Guirassy in the 79th minute to break the resistance of third-division club Rot-Weiss Essen and earn a nervous 1-0 victory in the German Cup yesterday. Dortmund found it hard going in their first competitive game of the season against the disciplined Essen backline, who were working overtime to keep the visitors' chances to a minimum. The hosts almost took the lead themselves in the 41st minute but Dortmund keeper Gregor Kobel denied Romien Safi from close range. Essen remained bold after the break, stifling most Dortmund attacks early while lurking on the break. But they could do nothing when Guinea international Guirassy picked up the ball at the edge of the box, battled with two Essen defenders before unleashing an unstoppable low drive past the keeper for a 79th minute lead. Dortmund, who start their Bundesliga season on Saturday with a trip to St Pauli, held on to their slim lead despite late pressure from the hosts, to advance to the second round. ‘We have to earn it': Xabi Alonso ready for Bernabeu debut as new-look Real Madrid begin La Liga push
MADRID, Aug 19 — Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso said the team's shortened pre-season will not be used as an excuse as they prepare to kick off their La Liga campaign at home to Osasuna today. Alonso will take charge at the Santiago Bernabeu for the first time after beginning his reign at the Club World Cup in the United States, where Madrid reached the semi-finals. Madrid's request to postpone their league opener to a later date was rejected by Spanish football officials, and the team have played just one friendly since their 4-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in New Jersey on July 9. 'Obviously it would have been nice to receive some support with our request, especially for the players' health... after such a long season and to have a little more preparation time,' Alonso said yesterday. 'But anyway, in the end it wasn't to be and that's that. We've only had two weeks and there's no point looking for excuses now.' Alonso has several new signings, including former Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold, at his disposal as Madrid look to turn the page on a disappointing end to the Carlo Ancelotti era. Madrid won the Champions League and La Liga in 2023–24 but finished runners-up domestically to arch-rivals Barcelona last season and suffered a quarter-final exit to Arsenal in Europe.
