East Cowes Vics in dreamland — Islanders secure Wessex Premier promotion

After defeating Alresford Town away on Wednesday (April 30), Vics travelled to Surrey and beat the team which finished second in the table, Frimley Green.
Ft @official_FGFC 1-1 @ecvafc 2nd half was very scrappy, Frimley through everything at Vics ,scored straight from the corner right at the death. So penalties it is. Your Play off winners are @ecvafc pic.twitter.com/n0N2rrNPce

In a goalless first half at the KBO Stadium, Vics had arguable the best efforts to break the deadlock.
Former Cowes Sports favourite, Gareth Bricknell, rolled back the years to produce an excellent free kick in the 25th minute, which the Frimley keeper had to tip round the post.

Vics keeper Alex Ram produced a smart save early in the half too, behind the division's meanest defence.
Although the home side had the better of the possession, you would not think they were the club with a playing squad double that of the underdogs, Vics.
Alex Smith gave his side plenty of motivation going into the second half, with Elliot Wheeler scoring with a side-footed drive from ten yards out, in the 49th minute.

A minute later, after the wild celebrations had died down, Ram was in action again to deny Frimley.
Vics almost gave themselves some breathing space just after the hour mark, when Josh Neale fired inches over from a free kick 25 yards out.
Ram, who has had another outstanding season in goal for Vics, produced a superb reaction save from a close range header in the 70th minute.
It was all hands to pump as Frimley peppered the Vics box with long, hopeful balls — but well defended as the game entered six minutes of added on time.
(Image: Those White Lines) Into the third minute of stoppage time, Frimley Green levelled, directly from a corner — the team's first defensive error of the match.
Both teams saw out the final few minutes as it went to penalties.
Frimley missed the first and Ram saved the third and, with some efficient finishing from the spot, Vics wrapped up promotion 4-1 on penalties.
Vics will now be hoping to make it a memorable double by beating Cowes Sports in the Isle of Wight Gold Cup final, at Westwood Park, in a week's time.

How to watch Mexico vs. Dominican Republic in the Concacaf Gold Cup on Saturday
Sixteen nations compete for the biennial Concacaf Gold Cup, which starts Saturday night and runs into the first week of July. The group stage kicks off with Mexico and the Dominican Republic. El Tri are favored in the tournament opener, while their Caribbean counterparts are bidding for a truly seismic upset. Advertisement International streaming via Concacaf GO. Mexico has claimed this event nine times, more than any other country in the competition. It is also the defending champion, sealing its 2023 title after beating Panama 1-0 in the final. Forward Santiago Giménez hit the pitch as a second-half substitute, then delivered a Gold Cup clincher in the 88th minute. Javier Aguirre's club is really on a roll, winning the March Concacaf Nations League final against … yup, Panama. It was another heart-racer between those two continental rivals, as Raúl Jiménez goals bookended the 2-1 match (eighth and 92nd minutes). Decorated veteran keeper Guillermo Ochoa leads his international side with 151 caps. He was the Golden Glove winner in that 2023 trophy run. The 24-year-old Giménez returns as well. The Dominican Republic is participating in its maiden Gold Cup. The team gets thrown right into the gauntlet with tournament staple Mexico, but it has at least built some confidence and modest momentum from an undefeated Nations League stretch. In a clean sweep of the 2024-25 League B season, Marcelo Neveleff and his squad landed their first-ever continental tournament spot. Dorny Romero, already the nation's all-time leading scorer at age 27, has 26 goals in 40 career caps. He tallied 12 goals in eight international matches last year, and had the first strike in Tuesday's 5-0 World Cup qualifying rout of Dominica. After Saturday, Group A action continues on June 18. Mexico will face Suriname; the Dominican Republic takes on Costa Rica. Streaming links in this article are provided by partners of The Athletic. Restrictions may apply. How to watch CONCACAF Gold Cup: TV channel and live stream as tournament begins
Favourites: The United States, Mexico and Canada will all have their eyes on Gold Cup glory (Getty Images) The latest edition of the CONCACAF Gold Cup begins in the United States tonight. Mexico kick off proceedings for 2025 in the biennial international tournament for the best teams from North America, Central America and the Caribbean, plus invited nation Saudi Arabia, hosting Group A rivals the Dominican Republic at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, California. Advertisement Mexico are record nine-time winners of the Gold Cup, having taken back the trophy from the USA two summers ago after edging past Panama in the final in LA. Javier Aguirre's side are the favourites to win it again this summer, with the United States coming in off the back of a tough start to the Mauricio Pochettino era that has seen them lose four matches in a row now and five of his first 10 games in charge. The USMNT were booed off by angry fans after conceding four goals in just 36 minutes in a one-sided friendly against Switzerland in Nashville earlier this week, following losses to Turkey and in the inaugural CONCACAF Nations League, also won by Mexico, where they were pipped to third place by rivals Canada after losing to Panama in the semi-finals. The USA are in Group D and begin their campaign against Trinidad and Tobago in San Jose on Sunday evening, with Jesse Marsch's Canada opening in Group B against Honduras in Vancouver on Tuesday.
