England bowl in fourth Test as India pick Bumrah
No team winning the toss and bowling first has ever won a Test at the Manchester ground.
Before the series started it was announced that Bumrah, the world's top-ranked Test bowler, would only play in three of the five games to protect his fitness following a back injury.
But with India 2-1 down following a dramatic 22-run defeat at Lord's, a game in which fast bowler Bumrah played, he was included in the tourists' team at Old Trafford.
India made three changes, with batsman Sai Sudharsan replacing Karun Nair, and Shardul Thakur and debutant Anshul Kamboj coming in for injured pacemen Nitish Kumar Reddy and Akash Deep.
Rishabh Pant was passed fit to keep wicket after suffering a finger injury.
England had already named their side, making just one change as they recalled Liam Dawson for the left-arm spinner's first Test in eight years after Shoaib Bashir suffered a series-ending finger injury at Lord's.
"There's pretty decent overhead conditions for bowling so that's what we're going to do," said Stokes.
"I think everyone left everything on the outfield at Lord's on the last day. The effort has been outstanding from both teams. It improves the quality of both sides."
India have yet to win a Test at Old Trafford following four defeats and five draws in nine previous matches.
"I was a bit confused (about what to do). The surface looks good, so a good toss to lose," said India captain Shubman Gill.
"I think we have been playing well in the last few matches. The small moments we have lost but apart from that, a number of sessions we have won more than them which is a positive for us."

Left-arm spinner Liam Dawson had earlier marked his first Test in eight years with the key wicket of Yashasvi Jaiswal after England captain Ben Stokes went against history by opting to bowl first. No team winning the toss and bowling first has ever won a Test at Old Trafford. But lively paceman Stokes led from the front with 2-47 in 14 overs as he again proved the pick of England's attack this series. India, 2-1 down after three Tests, must win in Manchester if they are to keep alive their hopes of winning the five-match campaign. The tourists, however, will have to make history of their own as they have never managed to win in nine previous Tests at Old Trafford. India got through the first session without losing a wicket only for three batsmen to be dismissed before tea. The recalled Sai Sudharsan, dropped on 20, twice hooked fast bowler Jofra Archer for four in the evening session before Pant launched Brydon Carse for a superb straight six. But the aggressive Pant was hurt when attempting an audacious reverse sweep off a yorker-length delivery from paceman Chris Woakes. England appealed for lbw but a review revealed wicketkeeper Pant had got an inside edge before the ball deflected onto his right foot. Pant, who had made 37 off 48 balls, eventually limped into a buggy before being driven off the field, with India then 212-3. Soon afterwards Sudharsan fell for a well-made 61 when a top-edged swivel pull off a short ball from Stokes flew straight to Carse at long leg. Bad light ended play for the day at 1721 GMT, even though the floodlights were on and England were bowling spin at both ends. Jaiswal and fellow opener KL Rahul had previously defied difficult conditions and testing bowling from Woakes and Archer to take India to 78-0 at lunch. But Rahul had added just six more runs to his interval score of 40 when, trying to force Woakes off the back foot, he edged to Zak Crawley at third slip, leaving India 94-1. Jaiswal late-cut Carse for four to go to 49 before completing a 96-ball fifty. Dawson glad to 'do a job' Dawson, recalled after 21-year-old off-spinner Shoaib Bashir suffered a series-ending finger injury during England's thrilling 22-run win in the third Test at Lord's, did not bowl before lunch. But the 35-year-old, playing his first Test since 2017, needed just seven balls to strike on Wednesday when Jaiswal pushed forward defensively to a good-length delivery and edged to Harry Brook at first slip. "What you say today was what you get, not amazing but I do a job for the team," the modest Dawson told Sky Sports after ending the day with 1-45 in 15 overs. He added: "I'm not getting any younger, so just try and enjoy it and take each day as it comes." New batsman and India captain Shubman Gill, who had accused England of contravening "the spirit of cricket" with their time-wasting tactics during an ill-tempered match at Lord's, was greeted with a chorus of boos from spectators as he walked out to the middle. But none of the ill-feeling between the teams in London was evident in Manchester on Wednesday. Gill's brief stay ended when he was lbw for 12 playing no shot to opposing captain Stokes following a vociferous appeal from the all-rounder. He reviewed, but to no avail, with India now 140-3. Rashford 'at home' at Barca after sealing loan from Man United
"Barcelona and Manchester United have reached a deal for the loan of the player Marcus Rashford until June 30, 2026," announced the La Liga champions in a statement. "The agreement also establishes an option to buy the English forward." Barcelona are paying around 75 percent of Rashford's £325,000-a-week wage ($435,000) while he is at the club, with the player foregoing the rest, according to Spanish reports. The 27-year-old England international was out of favour under United coach Ruben Amorim and spent the final months of the 2024/25 season on loan at Aston Villa. "I feel like my choice was easy, it's a family club, something I'm used to from my past. It feels like home so I feel like I've made the right decision," Rashford told reporters. "I'm just excited to get going and I'm eager to play the first game... it's a special moment for me." Rashford, who made his United debut in 2015, became an outcast at Old Trafford, with Amorim publically doubting his commitment and desire. Marcus Rashford: Tarnished Man Utd star seeks Barcelona redemption
The England winger on Wednesday joined Spanish champions Barcelona on loan in a deal that includes a purchase option, signalling a likely final exit from Old Trafford. Rashford appears to have secured the move he hankered after but there will be no hiding place at the Catalan giants. It was not supposed to be this way. The 27-year-old forward appeared to have the world at his feet when he signed a new five-year contract with United worth a reported £325,000 ($435,000) per week in July 2023. Fresh from scoring 30 goals in the 2022/23 season -- the first time a player had hit that mark for the club since Robin van Persie a decade earlier -- he appeared to be entering his prime. Rashford's approval rating was sky-high on and off the pitch after his role in forcing a British government U-turn over free school meals for disadvantaged children and his fights against racism and homelessness. The Manchester-born forward even featured on the cover of British Vogue in 2020 alongside supermodel turned mental health campaigner Adwoa Aboah as one of "The Faces of Hope". But Rashford clashed with former manager Erik ten Hag and the current boss, Ruben Amorim, and his United career quickly unravelled. Boyhood club The left winger joined United at the age of seven and emerged as a teenage prodigy in 2016, scoring twice on his United debut against Midtjylland and repeating the feat in his maiden Premier League appearance against Arsenal. Aged 18, Rashford became the then youngest England player to score on his debut, against Australia. He has won the Europa League and lifted two FA Cups and two League Cups, scoring 138 goals in 426 appearances for United. But there is a nagging feeling that a player blessed with talent and athletic ability has failed to fulfil his early promise. Rashford has not entirely been to blame for his struggles as a succession of managers deployed him as both a winger and a central striker, denying him the chance grow into one role. And his career has coincided with a decade in which United have lurched from manager to manager, and crisis to crisis, following the glory years under Alex Ferguson. United troubles The roots of Rashford's United exit can be traced back to December 2022. Just back from the World Cup in Qatar on a high after scoring three times, the forward found himself in trouble with Ten Hag after oversleeping and reporting late for a team meeting prior to a match at Wolves. Dropped and chastised by the Dutchman, he came off the bench to score the winner. Rashford was in hot water again in January 2024 after reports he had been seen in nightspots in Northern Ireland -- he missed training after reporting ill and did not feature in the club's 4-2 FA Cup win over Newport. As questions over his work ethic persisted, former United captain Gary Neville, now a Sky Sports pundit, warned him to "calm down", saying: "He's going through a dip in form but it can become your personality if you're not careful". But he endured numerous lengthy spells without a goal in Ten Hag's misfiring team. Rashford was left out of England's Euro 2024 squad and responded in limp fashion, managing six Premier League goals last season. A trip to New York, where he was pictured attending an NBA game during the November international break, was interpreted as further evidence that Rashford had lost focus. He scored the first goal of Amorim's reign in November but the Portuguese boss dropped a bombshell when he left him out of the squad for United's win at Manchester City in mid-December, questioning his attitude and work ethic. Days later a disgruntled Rashford said he was "ready for a new challenge" as the relationship soured and he signed for Aston Villa on loan in February. The forward made enough of an impact at Villa Park to earn a recall for England, now under the leadership of Thomas Tuchel. But Amorim has made it clear there is no future for him at Old Trafford.
