Brits making one easy lottery mistake that could 'hinder their winnings'

National Lottery players are being urged to avoid one error to increase their chances of winning big.
An estimated 70 percent of UK adults over 18 engage in the National Lottery, totalling nearly 45 million participants. This staggering statistic inspires numerous queries about winning odds—including the burning question: should you choose your own numbers or go for a lucky dip?
Recent discussions on Reddit revealed a lesser-known tip that could potentially increase your winnings if fortune favours you.
The debate was sparked by a Reddit user's post, which queried: "Statistically speaking, are you more likely to win the lottery using the same numbers every week rather than getting a lucky dip?"
Predictably, the thread saw a plethora of opinions and advice pour in from the lottery-playing community, which were quite diverse.
One commenter remarked: "Happy to be corrected but, as far as I know, each draw of the lottery is completely independent from the previous one. Therefore, keeping the same numbers each week gives you no greater likelihood of winning than having random ones," reports Bristol Live.
In contrast, another user referenced an unusual case from Eastern Europe: "There was a lottery in Bulgaria, maybe Hungary, a couple of years ago where the same numbers came up two weeks running. After an investigation they found nothing wrong.
"The chances of the same numbers coming up are exactly the same week on week. 1,2,3,4,5,6 is just as likely as any other combination. We see patterns and exclude random chance from them."
A third user contributed: "Every single draw is an individual event with zero relevance to previous or future draws. It makes no difference what approach you take."
Meanwhile, another remarked: "It makes no difference. Any set of numbers is just as likely to come up as any other."
For clarification, the lucky dip function allows punters to have their lottery numbers randomly selected by a computer. This option is available in several lottery games including Euromillions, Lotto, and Thunderball.
Utilising this feature means that each number sequence is uniquely generated without recalling past selections. Dream Jackpot has clarified: "Thus, if two or three of the same numbers are selected on a single ticket in different lines, it's purely coincidental.
"The software is designed to ensure a complete random selection of numbers, free from human bias or predictability."
While a lucky dip doesn't inherently increase your winning odds over choosing personal numbers, data suggests about 53 percent of lottery jackpots have been won through a lucky dip. However, this does not imply that a lucky dip grants any advantage for winning.
A significant number of lottery winners are those who opt for the automated selection method. The Health Lottery points out an interesting detail: "When numbers are chosen truly at random, it means you are less likely to share the pot with other winners.
"There are common patterns and themes that appear when people choose lottery numbers. For example, people often choose multiples of other numbers (e.g. 7, 14 and 21).
"This means that if those numbers win the big prize, the winnings will be shared with other people who chose the same numbers.
"Quick Pick numbers have been selected randomly, so are unlikely to have any sort of pattern or theme, which could make them less likely to match with other people's choices."
Many lottery players tend to pick numbers based on special dates such as birthdays or anniversaries, which tends to result in a greater frequency of lower numbers due to days only reaching 31 and months stopping at 12.
The Health Lottery advises: "Numbers that are chosen more often will appear on more lottery tickets – meaning a higher chance of sharing the top prize if you do win. By going with a Quick Pick or Lucky Dip option, you avoid this skew towards numbers that are in dates so could be less likely to have share your winnings."

Social media users chimed in on the post, with one remarking: ""Aren't you glad you waited" is the kind of thing you usually think about after and kick yourself for not getting to use it." Echoing this approval, another added: "Petty at its finest." A third user said: "When I worked briefly at a courthouse, I promised the clerks that I would help out with someone that did that. The rules would be the following: "Don't interrupt me while I'm counting, or I'd have to start over. The clerks wouldn't see the money until I've verified that it's all there. If you leave before I'm finished counting, it would be considered abandoned property, and would not be applied to your bill/fine/fees. "Never had to do that, but I kind of wished it would happen just once to break up the monotony." Another user, who had previously worked at a toll booth, shared a similar experience, saying: "Worked tolls at the border and I have absolutely done this. Though I didn't need the police threat. I just keep the gate closed." A further user expressed frustration with customers who try to pay with coins as a form of protest, saying: "I'll never understand people who do this and think they're 'sticking it to The Man'. Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling's ‘underrated' thriller now streaming
An underrated crime film from over 10 years ago starring two of Hollywood's biggest stars is currently streaming Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone's forgotten team-up from 2013 has just been added to Prime Video. The A-list Hollywood duo are best known for portraying love interests in the romantic-comedy Crazy Stupid Love and the Oscar-winning musical La La Land. However, they co-starred together in between these two hits in a wildly different film that's been all but forgotten. Helmed by Venom and Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer, Gangster Squad received middling reviews when it was first released and was not a huge hit amongst movie buffs. Gosling stars as Sergeant Jerry Wooters, a WWII veteran tasked with bringing down Los Angeles mob leader Mickey Cohen (played by Sean Penn), along with fellow cop Sergeant John O'Mara (Josh Brolin). Stone features in the film as Grace Faraday, an etiquette teacher close to Cohen who eventually falls for Jerry in this glossy send-up of hard-boiled noir thrillers. While Gangster Squad didn't capture audiences' imaginations as much as their other two collaborations, Gosling and Stone fans should definitely take this opportunity to give it another go now it's on Prime Video. Plenty of fans have reassessed the film as an underrated gem, with a Letterboxd reviewer saying: 'Definitely underrated as a movie and I definitely didn't expect it to get such bad reviews on several famous platforms... 'Although its script and plot were nothing out of the ordinary and original the film's vibes and noir genre were definitely what I loved about it!' Another wrote: 'This one smashed it out of the park for me. I had low expectations going in but came out very pleasantly surprised and to be honest, pretty damn impressed. 'Great cast, superb production design, fantastic shootouts and overall, really well made and hugely enjoyable. I loved it.' New roundabout opens in UK as locals get 3-minute video in how to use it
The £2m roundabout features a two-way segregated cycle track, a 3m wide footway, and a central island A 'Dutch-style' roundabout that comes with a comprehensive three-minute tutorial video has been opened in an English town, sparking debate among locals. The £2m construction in Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire is now open for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. Users of the innovative junction are instructed to yield to pedestrians first, followed by cyclists, before giving way to other vehicles, reports Bristol Live.. Local David Coulson, 65, expressed his concerns, saying: "I wouldn't be surprised if people got killed or injured on it. I also can't believe they spent this much money. It's right off the M1 - you're not going to get many pushbikes coming off there." He added: "I drive but I also take a walk up here. I don't see much other footfall than myself. I think they've done it because we've also got the Magic Roundabout and now they can say we've got both. At least it's colourful." Finance manager Fred Theron, 52, commutes by bike during warmer months from Luton and has reservations about driver awareness. He said: "I'm not sure if motorists will know how the cycle aspect works with having to give way. But I do think it's a good initiative and hopefully more people will cycle to work like I do." One sceptical local who chose to remain anonymous criticised the project as 'a complete waste of money', saying: "There are no pedestrians up this way really to give way to. There's more important things to worry about like homeless people. There was nothing wrong with the old roundabout." Local councillor Adrian England took the new Dutch-style roundabout in Hemel Hempstead for a spin. He said: "I cycle everywhere in Hemel Hempstead. With anything new - especially when you're a cyclist and all you've got is your helmet - you need to look after yourself. I felt perfectly safe today and I've come up along the cycle way." Stephen Giles-Medhurst of Hertfordshire County Council said: "We hope to encourage more people to cycle or walk to their places of employment. It's safer, as the pedestrian crossings and cycle path go all the way round it." Reflecting on his experience, he added: "I had a go on a bike this morning and it will take a little bit of getting used it. Vehicles are slowing down, maybe because it's new, but I didn't have any near misses. You can't engineer out someone being stupid." Local residents previously criticised the roundabout for its perceived complexity, leading Hertfordshire County Council to release an instructional CGI video. The video, lasting three minutes, educates cyclists to give way to pedestrians and stay alert of vehicles, despite having priority in their dedicated cycle track. It furthermore outlines the rule requiring cars and lorries to give way to cyclists and pedestrians both when entering and exiting the roundabout. Funding for the roundabout was provided by Active Travel England, the government's agency tasked with fostering walking, cycling and wheeling. At present, there are three Dutch-style roundabouts in use across the UK. The first was launched in Cambridge in 2020, succeeded by another in Sheffield in December 2024, and the most recent one began operation in Chichester in February 2025.
