Omdia Forecasts Cellular IoT Connections to Reach 5.1 Billion by 2030
This comprehensive study reveals how 5G technologies are fundamentally transforming the cellular IoT landscape, with three key technologies emerging as primary growth drivers: 5G RedCap, 5G Massive IoT, and 4G LTE Cat-1bis modules.
5G RedCap: The Mid-Tier Connectivity Solution
The research identifies 5G RedCap as a particularly significant development, with adoption expected to accelerate from 2025 onward. RedCap is positioning itself as the ideal mid-tier connectivity solution for 5G devices that don't require the premium specifications of Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communications (uRLLC) or Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB).
RedCap also delivers essential futureproofing benefits as the industry prepares for the gradual phase-out of 4G networks beyond 2030. Despite these advantages, the research notes that RedCap adoption has experienced slower initial deployment than originally anticipated.
"We are beginning to see 5G SA rollouts accelerate again after a brief period of slowdowns, which has delayed 5G RedCap mass adoption by a couple of years," explains Alexander Thompson, Senior Analyst for IoT at Omdia. "We are also seeing the first devices emerge on the market in the US, starting the transition of mid-tier connectivity from 4G to 5G."
Asia & Oceania Leading Global IoT Growth
Omdia's latest research reveals that the Asia & Oceania region will contribute over 67% of worldwide IoT module shipments, representing approximately 80% of total IoT connections in 2024.
The automotive industry has emerged as a significant catalyst in this growth trajectory, primarily driven by increasing consumer demand for intelligent vehicles with integrated 5G connectivity features.
"The dominance of the Asia & Oceania region in the IoT market cannot be overstated," notes Andrew Brown, Practice Lead, IoT at Omdia. "With 80% of total IoT connections concentrated in this region, we're witnessing a significant shift in global technology leadership that will shape IoT innovation and deployment strategies for years to come."
This substantial regional concentration underscores Asia & Oceania's pivotal role in shaping global IoT deployment strategies and highlights the region's technological leadership in connected device ecosystems.
Omdia's Cellular IoT Market Tracker 2021-2030 highlights the latest trends in the cellular IoT market, providing key analysis by region, air interface and application of module shipments, module revenues, connections (installed base) and connectivity revenues.

BiVACOR Total Artificial Heart Accepted into FDA's Total Product Life Cycle (TAP) Program
HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--BiVACOR, Inc., a clinical-stage medical device company developing the world's first titanium Total Artificial Heart (TAH), today announced that its TAH System has been accepted into the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) prestigious Total Product Life Cycle (TPLC) Advisory Program, also known as the TAP program. This milestone further solidifies BiVACOR's collaboration with the FDA following the TAH's earlier recognition this year as a Breakthrough Device. This isn't just a vote of confidence in BiVACOR, it's a vote of confidence in the future of heart replacement technology. The TAP program gives us the opportunity to collaborate with the FDA at a level that aligns with urgency and magnitude of our mission. Share The TAP program is a transformative FDA initiative designed to accelerate the development and patient access to high-impact medical technologies. Entry into the program provides BiVACOR with proactive, strategic engagement with the FDA throughout the entire product life cycle, from development to commercialization, supporting more efficient, risk-informed decision-making. TAP participation is reserved for breakthrough-designated devices with the potential to significantly improve patient outcomes for serious or life-threatening conditions. 'Acceptance into the TAP program marks a major milestone not just for BiVACOR, but for the field of mechanical circulatory support as a whole,' said Daniel Timms, Founder and Chief Technology Officer of BiVACOR. 'The BiVACOR TAH has the potential to fundamentally redefine the standard of care for patients with end-stage heart failure. TAP access gives us a powerful framework for working hand-in-hand with the FDA to bring this technology to the patients who need it most.' The BiVACOR TAH is intended for use as a bridge to transplant in adults with severe, irreversible biventricular or univentricular heart failure, particularly for patients who cannot be treated with traditional left ventricular assist devices (LVADs). The system employs a magnetically levitated centrifugal pump, inspired by space and industrial technologies, which provides continuous, pulsatile, and physiologically responsive cardiac support. The FDA's acceptance letter to BiVACOR emphasized that the TAP program's inclusion reflects the agency's confidence in the technology's potential to transform clinical practice. As part of the program, BiVACOR will receive more regulatory guidance, earlier identification of scientific and evidentiary gaps, and greater coordination among stakeholders, including payers and patient advocacy groups. 'This isn't just a vote of confidence in BiVACOR, it's a vote of confidence in the future of heart replacement technology,' said William Cohn, MD, BiVACOR Chief Medical Officer and renowned cardiac surgeon. 'The TAP program gives us the opportunity to collaborate with the FDA at a level that aligns with the urgency and magnitude of our mission to bring a durable, fully implantable artificial heart to patients with no other options.' Hidden way Aussies are cutting $20,000 from their tax bill every year
For most Aussies, tax isn't just a cost - it's often their single biggest expense. Particularly if you're earning a decent income, you're likely handing over tens of thousands of dollars to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) each year. That's more than most people's mortgage, school fees, or even their annual holiday budget. This can be super frustrating. You're not doing anything wrong, you're just following the system. RELATED Expert's secret to retire early 'without earning more money' Little-known Centrelink perk offers Australian students free flights Massive queue exposes urgent Australian job trend as numbers hit record levels But the thing most people don't realise is that by being smart and using the rules to your advantage, there are legal ways you can claw back $20,000 or more every year in tax. And the best part is that you can do it without cutting a single dollar from your spending or lifestyle. Just to be clear, this isn't about tax dodges, claiming your work laptop, or a few extra kilometres in your car logbook. This is about understanding how the tax system actually works - and then using the right tactics to make it work for problem: earning more means keeping less In Australia, we work under what's called a 'progressive' tax system. This means that the more money you earn, the more tax you pay per dollar. If you're on a solid income, getting into the six-figure territory, you're probably handing over somewhere between $20,000 and $50,000 (or more) each year in tax. But the kicker is that as you work harder, that number gets bigger, and fast. Promotions, bonuses, or pay bumps can push you into the higher brackets where nearly half of every new dollar you earn disappears in tax. The thing that most people miss is that you don't just have to cop it. With the right strategy, you can reduce your tax burn and grow your money at the same time. Don't just earn more (structure smarter) There's no single silver bullet here, but there is a system smart people are using to reduce tax while building serious financial momentum. It's a combination of three high-impact moves; negative gearing, debt recycling, and tax effective investing. None of these tactics are secrets, and they're all fully in line with the ATO's rules. But what's less commonly understood is how they can work together to completely reshape your financial future. Negative gearing Negative gearing has copped its fair share of political heat. But when done right, it's a smart tool - not a get-rich-quick scheme. Negative gearing works when you borrow money to acquire an investment (like property or even shares) and the expenses of your investment (like interest on a loan) are more than the income your investment generates. When this happens, you create a tax deductible loss that reduces your taxable income earned today, and your tax bill today. Over time, the value of your asset or investment grows, and this growth can be used to build your wealth over time. If you're thinking about negative gearing, it's important you choose quality investments that actually grow over time. And importantly, you need to be smart with your cashflow planning and make sure you don't overextend. The goal isn't to lose money, it's to bring forward tax savings while growing serious wealth over the years ahead. Debt recycling If you own a home and you're paying down your mortgage in the standard way outlined by the banks, you're sitting on a huge financial opportunity. Debt recycling is a strategy that gradually converts your non-deductible home loan into tax deductible investment debt. Through this strategy, you're using the equity in your home to invest, generally into income producing assets like shares. When you do this, this portion of your mortgage becomes tax deductible. With this strategy, you're paying down and reducing your non tax deductible mortgage debt, and 'replacing' it with tax deductible debt. And the opportunity here is huge. Based on Australia's average mortgage size of $660,000 and an interest rate of 6 per cent, this has the ability to generate $39,600 in tax deductions. Over time, you're shrinking the bad debt on your mortgage while growing an investment portfolio that cuts your tax bill and builds passive income at the same time. This strategy is one of my favourites. Tax effective investing Most people that invest do it all by owning their investments in their own name - but that's not always the smartest move, particularly if your income is in the higher tax brackets. Investing through tax structures like family trusts, investment bonds, companies, and even superannuation can all allow you to cut the tax on your investment income while maintaining full control over your investments. Depending on your situation, these structures can also allow you to spread income across multiple people, cap tax on investment returns, or defer tax entirely. For example, investing through an investment bond will cap the total tax paid at 30 per cent, and eliminate tax on capital gains when you hold your investments for ten years or more. That alone can make a huge difference to your investing bottom line over time. Worth calling out that tax structures are complex, and probably not the sort of thing you want to DIY. If you're thinking about going down this path, you should talk to an expert to get your structure right and make sure it fits with your lifestyle and goals. This isn't a one-size-fits-all approach. The wrap Individually, these three tax-saving strategies can save you money. But when used together, they can easily cut your tax bill by $20,000 or more each year - which is money you can then reinvest to grow your money faster. Over a decade, that's a solid six figure difference in your position, not to mention the extra growth you get on the money. And the kicker here is that you don't need to earn an extra dollar more to get there. This is simply about using what you already have more effectively. Tax is high in Australia, but if you aren't using the tools you have available to you, you're playing the game with one hand tied behind your back. The people cutting their tax bills and using the money to get ahead faster aren't lucky - they're better informed, and have decided to play smarter. Samsung is now tracking employee office attendance
Samsung is one of many companies that have been pushing for employees to return to the office fulltime. However, now the brand is taking RTO efforts in the U.S. one step further with a tool that tracks attendance for a group in its semiconductor business. In an internal email, seen by Business Insider, Samsung informed employees about the new compliance tracking tool. 'This tool will provide each Manager with visibility to the number of days & time in building metrics for each team member,' the email said. It continued, 'This will ensure that team members are fulfilling their expectation regarding in office work – however that is defined with their business leader – as well as guarding against instances of lunch/coffee badging.' In 2023 the brand embraced a global hybrid work model, rolling out 500 new jobs. While the specifics varied, the majority of the postings (58.3%) included the ability to work from home at least part of the work week. The brand also gave employees in the company's corporate offices in South Korea one Friday off a month. However, last April, after posting lower than expected sales, the brand asked its corporate executives to begin working six days a week in order to 'inject a sense of crisis' into its workforce. 'Considering that performance of our major units, including Samsung Electronics Co., fell short of expectations in 2023, we are introducing the six-day work week for executives to inject a sense of crisis and make all-out efforts to overcome this crisis,' a Samsung Group executive told the Korea Economic Daily. This May, Samsung asked employees to begin returning to the office full time. The following month, it updated employees on the RTO initiative. 'We are already experiencing increased foot traffic daily, with more cars in the parking lot and hungry mouths in our cafeterias on Fridays, to name just a few signs,' Samsung said in an email viewed by BI. At the time, Samsung also noted that it was developing a tool to track attendance. Employee tracking might sound offbeat, but workplace surveillance is on the rise. According to a recent ExpressVPN survey, 74% of U.S. employers now use online tracking tools to monitor work activities. That includes real-time screen tracking (59%) and web browsing logs (62%). Likewise, 61% use AI -powered analytics to measure productivity and around 67% collect biometric data to monitor things like behavior and attendance. Still, that doesn't mean it's popular among employees or feels all that ethical. While most companies (three out of four) use biometric surveillance, only 22% of employees know they're being monitored, according to the same report. Likewise, 17% of employees said they'd be 'very likely' to resign over workplace surveillance. Another 32% said they'd strongly consider it. It's unclear how Samsung's new tracking tool will work, how closely employees will be monitored, and how many employees will be impacted. Fast Company reached out to the brand but did not hear back by the time of publication. Samsung told employees they will find out more about the tracking system soon. 'Additional information regarding the new tool will be made available to Managers this month,' the email to employees said.
