Witness in Lim Guan Eng's undersea tunnel trial says ‘too traumatised' to testify after violent robbery

'I am still traumatised. It is not that I don't want to cooperate [with the court], but I want to ensure my safety first,' he said.
Judge Azura Alwi said it was the responsibility of the police and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to take all measures necessary to safeguard Gnanaraja.
Deputy public prosecutor Mahadi Abdul Jumaat informed the court that since Gnanaraja was not mentally fit, they would call investigating officer Zulhilmi Ramli as the next witness.
The trial will resume on August 27.
Earlier this month, police confirmed that Gnanaraja sustained injuries during a group robbery at a residence in Jalan Bukit Gasing, Petaling Jaya, and clarified that the incident was not linked to the ongoing court case.
Gnanaraja previously said that he would seek protection under the witness protection programme after suffering injuries to his face and hand during the incident.
Lim is accused of using his position as Penang chief minister to solicit a 10 per cent cut of the profits from the proposed undersea tunnel project and accepting RM3.3 million in kickbacks.
He also faces two charges of dishonestly misappropriating RM208.7 million worth of state land.

The Kota Kinabalu Court Complex. KOTA KINABALU (Aug 19): A civil servant was freed by a Sessions Court here from a charge of allegedly receiving bribe eight years ago. Judge Jason Juga acquitted and discharged Nurul Syazwanie Idris, 35, without calling for her defence on Tuesday. In his reserved ruling, the judge held that the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case against the accused. Nurul was accused of accepting the bribe from a man allegedly as a reward to help a company to get the work of supplying goods for a sport programme. The alleged offence took place on March 17, 2017. The charge provides for a jail term of up to 20 years or a fine of not less than five times the amount or value of the bribe, or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction. The prosecution had called 20 witnesses during the trial. Counsel Datuk Ram Singh and Prem Elmer Ganasan represented Nurul.

Saifuddin: Over 100,000 foreign construction workers untraceable after legalisation scheme
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 — A total of 100,646 foreign workers holding Temporary Work Visit Passes (PLKS) in the construction sector failed to be detected after the foreign worker whitewashing programme implemented by the Construction Labour Exchange Centre Bhd (CLAB), according to the Home Minister. According to Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, the government will implement measures and punitive actions against employers and foreign workers in the construction sector who commit offences under existing regulations. 'They come in, they hold the construction sector PLKS, but when whitewashing is carried out by CLAB, we cannot find any impact. If they misuse the passes, we will take action according to the offence. 'If their passes have expired, they should have signed a check-out memo and left the country. If they do not leave the country, we will track them down,' he said. He said this at the press conference of the Joint Committee Meeting between the Minister of Home Affairs and the Minister of Human Resources, Steven Sim, on the Management of Foreign Workers today. According to Saifuddin, the matter was revealed following a presentation by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) during the meeting. 'We will see what Act they violated and punitive action will be taken,' he said. Previously, he was reported to have said that applications for foreign worker employment quotas are now only allowed on a case-by-case basis involving three main sectors and 10 selected sub-sectors.
