Chelsea 4-1 AC Milan: Liam Delap brace fires Blues to pre-season victory over ten-man Rossoneri

Yahoo2 days ago
Chelsea completed a perfect pre-season campaign at Stamford Bridge with a 4-1 win over ten-man AC Milan.
Barely 48 hours after dispatching Bayer Leverkusen 2-0, the Blues were back in action against Italian opposition, with goals from Liam Delap and Joao Pedro confirming a second win in as many outings.
Much has been made of Chelsea's rushed preparations for the new Premier League season, which kicks off next week, but they showed again today that the squad's considerable depth may be sufficient to minimise the effects of a gruelling Club World Cup campaign.
There were fresh injury worries for the hosts, though, as Trevoh Chalobah hobbled off with an ankle injury in the second half. With Levi Colwill set to be absent for months with an ACL injury, Enzo Maresca will be sweating on the defender's fitness.
A chaotic first half ended with Chelsea firmly in control, sporting a one-man advantage and a two-goal lead. Their dominance was due in no small part to the contributions of Andrei Coubis, a Milan academy graduate who endured an unenviable senior debut.
With five minutes played, he turned Reece James' cross into his own net, and was perhaps unlucky to do so after Trevoh Chalobah missed his attempted header.
Chelsea doubled their advantage just three minutes later, as Joao Pedro added another goal to his Chelsea catalogue, heading home from Pedro Neto's lofted pass.
Coubis' afternoon then went from bad to worse. He scrambled to recover as Pedro broke the line and bore down on goal, coming up with a desperate tackle better suited to a rugby pitch and was promptly dismissed, sent for an early shower just 18 minutes into his first-team bow.
Cole Palmer went close with a pair of well-hit free-kicks and a close-range scissor-kick, and was unlucky not to add to the Blues' advantage before the break.
So too was Rafael Leao, Milan's only credible threat in the first period, who forced a pair of shots saved by Robert Sanchez before seeing a goal ruled out for offside.
Milan were improved somewhat in the second half by the introduction of Luka Modric, who added much-needed rhythm and composure to the side.
After a spell of pressure from the visitors, though, Estevao's introduction off the bench had Chelsea back in the driver's seat. Mere minutes after his introduction, he was hauled down in the penalty area, earning a spot-kick which Delap fired under Mike Maignan to extend the hosts' lead.
The advantage was pegged back to two moments later as Alexis Saelemaekers danced off the left flank and played Youssouf Fofana in behind. The Frenchman made no mistake, though his goal was a mere consolation.
Delap added a fourth with seconds remaining, smashing home first-time from Andrey Santos' flicked pass to complete the Blues' pre-season preparations.
Their attention will now turn to the 2025-26 Premier League campaign, which kicks off as Crystal Palace visit Stamford Bridge a week today.

Huddersfield sign Evalds permanently from Hull KR

Former England international Niall Evalds has turned his loan at Huddersfield Giants from Hull KR into a permanent move. Evalds has signed a two-year contract with the Giants after injuries wrecked his 2025 campaign with the west Yorkshire club. The 31-year-old broke his foot just 35 minutes into his debut in March before he suffered a season-ending calf problem in July on his comeback. Part of the KR side that reached the 2024 Grand Final, Evalds will now stay at the John Smith's Stadium until at least 2027. "When I signed on loan, it wasn't with a short-term view," Evalds said. "It was to be at Giants for the next few years. I want to focus on getting back to enjoying it and doing what I can do. "The start of my Giants career hasn't gone particularly to plan, but I'm here for the longer term and I'm working really hard in rehab to get back stronger for next year."

Morata joins Serie A side Como on loan

Spain captain Alvaro Morata has joined Como on loan with an obligation to buy from fellow Serie A side AC Milan, the two clubs announced on Tuesday. The 32-year-old spent the final few months of last season on loan at Galatasaray after falling out of favour at the San Siro. Ambitious club Como finished 10th in Serie A last season under coach Cesc Fabregas, in their first top-flight campaign for 21 years. "Last year, playing against them, I was able to appreciate the team and the project -- you can see that there is a lot of ambition," Morata said in a statement. "I promise the fans and the club that I will give 200 percent in every training session and every match. I can't wait to wear this shirt." Morata has won several major trophies in a career that has included spells at Real Madrid, Juventus, Atletico Madrid and Chelsea. He also led Spain to the Euro 2024 title as skipper. "I've known Alvaro for many years and I've always admired the way he plays and the way he carries himself," said Fabregas. "He's an intelligent striker who has delivered in the biggest moments and a teammate who lifts everyone around him." The new Serie A season gets under way next week, with Como kicking off their campaign with a home match against Lazio on August 24. fbx/jc/ea

Diogo Jota tribute: Premier League teams to observe a period of silence in first round of matches

LONDON (AP) — Premier League teams will observe a moment's silence during the first round of matches this weekend in memory of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, the competition confirmed Tuesday. The Premier League has spoken to Liverpool about the most appropriate way to remember Jota, who died in a car accident alongside his brother in Spain in July. As well as a period of silence prior to kickoff in the matches, players of all clubs will be given black armbands, while messaging and imagery will be shared with clubs for them to use on big screens. Tributes were paid to the brothers before Sunday's Community Shield between Liverpool and Crystal Palace at Wembley Stadium, with wreaths laid on the pitch and a period of silence before kickoff. A minority of Palace fans broke the silence, eliciting a strong response at the other end of the field as well as from other Palace supporters who tried to silence those not respecting the tribute. ___ AP soccer:
