AirPods may soon get in-person live translation, iOS 26 beta hints ahead of iPhone 17 launch

India Todaya day ago
Apple could be bringing in-person or real-world live translation to AirPods, making them even more useful than ever, especially for travellers. According to a report from 9to5Mac, the latest iOS 26 developer beta 6 includes a new system asset showing what appears to be a gesture for triggering translation. The image, which features text in English, Portuguese, French, and German, is linked to the Translate app and seems to be designed for the AirPods Pro 2 and the AirPods 4. The gesture itself involves pressing both AirPods stems at the same time, which could act as a quick way to start translating a conversation on the go.

advertisementTo recall, Apple first announced its Live Translation feature at WWDC 25, but the focus then was on FaceTime, phone calls, and messages. What it didn't mention was in-person conversations, something that would fit naturally into the AirPods experience. This could put them in competition with translation-capable wearables, such as Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses. While Apple hasn't confirmed any details, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman had previously reported that real-world translation was being worked on.At the moment, it's unclear which iPhones will be compatible with the feature, since the processing power will likely come from the phone rather than the AirPods themselves. It's possible the requirement could match Apple's existing Live Translation features, which are available only when Apple Intelligence is enabled on supported devices. Those currently work with select languages, including Chinese (Simplified), English (UK, US), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), and Spanish (Spain). Given the higher demands of live conversation, 9to5Mac speculates it could even be exclusive to the iPhone 17 series, which Apple is expected to launch next month in September.
Now, the Live Translation feature for real-world conversations is a big deal, considering that Apple has a huge user base around the world. Imagine millions of AirPods users suddenly having the ability to live translate a conversation in their desired language on the go, will be a major feat. And even if Apple limits it at launch, it's the kind of feature that would make AirPods a lot more than just a pair of high-end wireless earbuds for music and calls. In other news, Apple could be planning to launch the third-gen AirPods Pro model, likely alongside the iPhone 17 series. According to an earlier report by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, this would make it the first major AirPods Pro update since 2022, when the second-generation arrived. While there were some minor updates later, like switching to USB-C, the design has stayed the same, and that's likely to continue. However, another popular analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, believes the earbuds could be delayed until 2026, citing production issues.Either way, the AirPods Pro 3 could reportedly keep the same compact white earbuds and case, with most changes happening inside. Expected upgrades include a new Apple H3 headphone chip, a U2 chip in the MagSafe charging case, and the continuation of IPX4 water resistance. There's also speculation about new health-related features, such as body temperature sensing via the ear canal, which could provide more accurate readings than wrist-based devices like the Apple Watch.- Ends

iPhone 17 Air in sky blue leaked: Video shows colour and size compared to iPhone 16 Pro

Apple's upcoming iPhone 17 Air is expected to be available in four colours, with Sky Blue appearing to be a likely favourite, according to a recently circulated dummy model video. Earlier this year, Apple introduced the M4 MacBook Air in Sky Blue, and the colour reportedly proved popular among users. The forthcoming iPhone 17 Air appears to follow a similar design approach, bringing back the shade for the smartphone line, noted 9To5Mac. A video shared by Majin Bu on X showcases a dummy model of the iPhone 17 Air in Sky Blue from multiple angles. The clip highlights the colour's versatility, which can appear almost white under certain lighting conditions but shows a more distinct blue hue under others. The video also includes a side-by-side comparison with the iPhone 16 Pro in Desert Titanium, offering viewers a sense of the 17 Air's slimmer profile. In terms of specifications, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to feature an A19 Pro processor with a reduced 5-core GPU configuration, according to Chinese tipster Fixed Focus Digital. Only the higher-end iPhone 17 Pro models are predicted to include the full 6-core GPU version. The source, who has previously shared accurate information about the device, suggested that the reduction in GPU cores could be related to chip binning or heat management in the thinner chassis. Reports indicate that the difference in everyday performance is unlikely to be noticeable to most users. These claims contrast with earlier predictions by industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who suggested that the iPhone 17 Air would run on a standard A19 chip, while Fixed Focus Digital maintains that the base iPhone 17 will also use the regular A19. The iPhone 17 Air is anticipated to continue Apple's trend of producing thinner, lighter devices, with additional colour options aimed at appealing to consumer preferences.

Apple denies favouring ChatGPT after partnership claims, rejects Elon Musk's allegation that App Store hinders rivals

Apple has rejected allegations from Elon Musk that its App Store discriminates against competitors, insisting the platform is free and fair of bias, according to a BBC report. The remarks come after the Tesla and X chief threatened legal action, accusing Apple of making it 'impossible' for apps to rival ChatGPT-maker OpenAI in the store. Musk's criticism followed his renewed clash with OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman, whom he labelled a 'liar' after Altman accused him of using X to 'benefit himself and his own companies'. The dispute marks the latest escalation in a long-running feud between the two tech leaders, who co-founded OpenAI before Musk's departure from the firm. In a statement to the BBC, Apple said: 'We feature thousands of apps through charts, algorithmic recommendations and curated lists selected by experts using objective criteria.' Apple entered into a partnership with ChatGPT in June 2024 but has denied any preferential treatment. The company noted that other AI tools, including DeepSeek and Perplexity, have reached top positions in App Store rankings since then. Musk, however, continued to criticise the company online, questioning why neither X nor its AI chatbot Grok featured in the App Store's 'Must Have' section. He pointed out that X ranked as the number one news app globally and Grok was fifth among all apps, while ChatGPT topped the UK's free app chart. Official rankings show Grok in third place and X absent from the top 40. Meanwhile, tensions between the xAI chief and Sam Altman escalated further, as the public spat unfolded against the backdrop of legal proceedings in the United States. This week, District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers allowed OpenAI's claims against Musk to proceed to trial, including accusations of a 'years-long harassment campaign' involving public remarks, social media activity, court filings, and what the company describes as a 'sham bid' for its assets. The trial is expected to intensify tensions in a rivalry that has persisted for over a decade, stemming from Musk's belief that OpenAI abandoned its original founding principles.
