Cross-border road trips to the US from Canada fell for a fifth straight month, a gloomy outlook for many American vacation spots once frequented by their northern neighbors during the peak summer travel season.
Canadian-resident return trips by automobile from the US tumbled 38.1% in May from a year ago, Statistics Canada data showed Tuesday. Since January, Canadians returned from 2.5 million fewer car trips to the US than they did in the same five-month period last year.

International tourists viewing the headlines from Los Angeles and other big U.S. cities may decide to skip the hassle and vacation elsewhere. The U.S. keeps giving tourists reasons to not visit. Most of Los Angeles feels normal, but after days of protests over an ICE crackdown — and with curfews, arrests, and military deployments downtown — some tourists are starting to rethink their plans. "Clients are concerned with flying and driving to the cruise ports in the L.A. area and have changed plans for cruising for the summer," said travel agent Debbie Allen at "Many have altered their plans to travel to Alaska (Seattle) and East Coast ports rather than L.A." Asia Lantz, a travel advisor based in Phoenix at said a lot of his international clients typically fly out of LAX, but they are opting for Phoenix instead. "It's not full-on panic, but there's definitely more concern about the overall vibe in bigger cities right now," Lantz said. "People are asking more questions than usual about airport logistics, layovers and whether it's even worth routing through certain places." In addition to Los Angeles, protests against the Trump administration's mass deportation policy have broken out in San Francisco, Oakland, and Santa Ana, California; Austin, San Antonio, Dallas and Houston, Texas; New York; Boston; Chicago; Atlanta; Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. As of Wednesday, 700 U.S. Marines were undergoing training in the area, according to CNN. "I've had clients reconsider layovers or shift plans to alternative destinations not because they're afraid of protests, but because they don't want their vacation to be overshadowed by unpredictability or tension," Lantz said. "That said, most of my travelers trust that I'll flag any real risks and help them make informed decisions." Five other travel advisors said Los Angeles tourism was unaffected by the protests, which are centered in the downtown area and away from most — but not all — of the city's tourism sights. "There's no softening to speak of," said Eric Marino, president of All-Travel and vice chairman of the American Society of Travel Advisors National Board of Directors. "It's a non-issue and I would say a non-story." Waymo Paused LA Operations In other developments, Waymo halted the operations of its self-driving cars in parts of LA after protesters set several on fire, the Washington Post reported. And the Mexico national soccer team, slated to play a match in the city on Saturday against the Dominican Republic, canceled its plans to stay in a hotel in downtown LA, and decided on another hotel instead, according to the Associated Press. Mayor Karen Bass instituted an 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew downtown in a one-square-mile area. Airbnb decline to comment on the impact to its business of the Los Angeles or wider protests, and Expedia and Priceline didn't immediately comment. Visit California referred us to the Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board, which didn't reply to a request for comment. One travel industry source said Wednesday he just visited LA with his family on vacation, spent a day in downtown LA, and didn't learn about the protests until they returned to the hotel. "We did a walking food tour, in the afternoon, and then a concert at the Hollywood Bowl at night with zero issues and then went back to the hotel to learn 'mobs have set the city on fire.''

Late last year, Dan Davis of Cleveland, Ohio, began planning a motorcycle trip with friends this summer that includes several days in Ontario. But those plans became a little uncertain after U.S. President Donald Trump took office in January and imposed tariffs on Canada, sparking a trade war. That, coupled with Trump's frequent threats to make Canada the 51st state, has sparked anger among many Canadians. Davis noted that, in February, Canadians booed the U.S. national anthem at several NHL hockey games, and in March, the Canadian government ran a billboard campaign in a dozen U.S. states, including Ohio, declaring that Trump's "tariffs are a tax." "Those things just made us wonder, 'Wow, are we going to be welcome in Canada?' " said Davis, adding that the licence plates on the group's motorcycles reveal they're from Ohio — a state Trump won in the 2024 election. "On a motorcycle, you're a little more vulnerable," he said. "All it takes is one person to say, 'You know what, I'm going to show these guys a lesson,' whether it's vandalizing a bike or … throwing a beer can at you." Fewer U.S. tourists visiting Canada Since Trump took office and Canada-U.S. relations have become strained, fewer Canadians are visiting the U.S., and fewer Americans are coming to Canada. The number of trips Americans took to Canada by car declined 10.7 per cent in April and 8.4 per cent in May compared to the same time last year. Air travel declined 5.5 per cent in April and 0.3 per cent in May. Some tourism associations worry a number of Americans may be staying away because they fear a chilly reception, so they've launched ad campaigns which assure their neighbours they'll be warmly welcomed. It's a worthy cause considering what's at stake: The majority of Canada's tourists come from the U.S., and they spent $15.3 billion in the country last year. "It was really important for us to send the message to these visitors … that they are truly welcome, not to be scared to visit us," said Isabelle Charlebois, general director of Tourism Eastern Townships, a region in southeastern Quebec near the U.S. border. The group launched a TV ad in late May, running in New England and New York state. Set in the Eastern Townships, it shows a U.S. tourist whispering sheepishly to a hotel clerk that he's American. The clerk smiles knowingly, and gives the American a big, warm hug. "Come hug it out in the Eastern Townships," says the tagline. WATCH | Quebec tourism group offers to 'hug it out': Charlebois says the ad campaign was partly inspired by the fact that local tourism operators were fielding numerous calls from concerned Americans. "They were calling … asking if they should postpone their trip, or if they will be welcome in Quebec," she said. "This relationship we have with our neighbour is really important for us. That's why we sent this message, and I hope it works." 'Perception is reality' In May, out of the 200 businesses surveyed by the Tourism Industry Association of Ontario, 32 per cent reported lower summer bookings by Americans compared to the same time last year. John Kinney, owner of Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours, says, so far this season, his location just outside Niagara Falls has seen 15 per cent fewer American customers compared to this time last year. "Unfortunately, perception is reality," said Kinney. "If it's perceived that there's political woes, people say, 'I hear Myrtle Beach is nice.' They just go to a completely different area." To encourage Americans to heard north, Niagara Falls Tourism has launched a page on its website just for them. Along with listing attractions, it declares, "To our friends in the U.S.A. — we can't wait to welcome you!" Back in Cleveland, Davis spotted a billboard last week on the highway and says he took it as a sign he's welcome in Canada. This time, instead of denouncing Trump's tariffs, the billboard invited Americans to visit Ontario and take advantage of the low Canadian dollar. Destination Ontario, the province's tourism organization, launched the campaign in several U.S. states last month. "It's good to see that they are encouraging visitors," said Davis, who is now looking forward to his Ontario trip. "We all just need to come together as human beings on both sides of the border and embrace each other." B.C. bear tour operators beckon Americans Over on the West Coast, British Columbia businesses that specialize in bear viewing are also rolling out the welcome mat. More than a dozen took part in a video, posted on YouTube on May 30, which promises Americans "open arms" and "warm hospitality." B.C.'s Commercial Bear Viewing Association, which put together the ad, says it will soon be launched as part of a social media campaign in select U.S. markets. WATCH | B.C. businesses welcome U.S. tourists: Marg Leehane, general manager of Great Bear Lodge in Campbell River, B.C., shouted out, "You're always welcome," in the video. It's a message she hopes will resonate, as American bookings at her lodge are down by 28 per cent so far compared to this time last year. "Americans always make up a good percentage of our visitors, and we're disappointed to not have them coming," she said. "I think they're worried the political message will get reflected on them. But of course, that's not how most Canadians feel." Leehane says she's getting more Canadian bookings this year than usual, which helps offset the decline in American customers. Still, she worries that decline could have lasting repercussions. "We don't want to lose that pipeline of American visitors," she said. "They would have come back as repeat guests. So it's not just this year that we would lose out on those visitors, it's the future years." The tanking economy, jammed airports, travel disruptions, canceled flights and flight delays--plus lost luggage claims up 18%--are causing vacationers to rethink how they want to spend summer vacations. As a result, smart workcations are becoming more popular in the summer of 2025. Almost one year ago to the day I was writing about 'hushcations' for in which younger workers were sneaking vacations without calling off work or disclosing their location to their employers. The 'hush movement' grew among remote workers across the country as they tried to find risk-averse ploys to combine remote working with their desire for job flexibility. Now, as summer 2025 nears, Americans hit a 15-year low in travel planning, according to Fortune, explaining that job insecurity from DOGE layoffs and tariffs are shattering 2025 vacation plans. This summer vacationers are turning to a different kind of break called 'slow summer vacations,' shying away from baggage delays and loss, long lines, flight delays and disruptions and scaling back activities, cutting costs and allowing more unstructured time. A new Monster study reveals that most employees aren't getting the flexibility or support they need to enjoy the summer months. A notable 84% of U.S. workers say they aren't offered any designated summer benefits. And64% say they struggle to maintain a healthy work-life balance during the summer, When it comes to managing seasonal schedule conflicts, 42% report feeling unsupported by their managers or employers Among employees who receive summer benefits, 55% say it improves their productivity, proving that seasonal flexibility is more than just a perk--it's a performance booster. Workations are having a moment, as almost half of office workers (46%) have taken a one, with one in four doing so to obtain a better quality of life, and eight in ten claiming that a workation helps them cope with burnout. In fact, one in three workers have completed tasks on a beach or on a plane, according to a recent survey by Headway app. If you're like most people, the availability of technology and remote work make it impractical to plan a vacation totally devoid of work. White-knuckling through wondering if a work problem is going unaddressed actually raises your anxiety. Instead of planning a "cold turkey' vacation, it makes more sense to shoot for a smart workcation that balances play with work. Here are my five tips on how to have a fun and productive smart workcation: Limited communication with the office while vacationing can be less stressful than no communication at all and worrying about things piling up. Feeling that you're getting behind can make you feel out of control and make it harder to chill. Strictly enforced limits on vacations such as an hour a day to check email or make phone calls can help you relax. The breakneck speed of technology can activate your stress response, provoking a cortisol/dopamine squirt. Then you respond to the immediacy of the device as if it were a threat to extinguish. Be master instead of slave to your devices. Use custom ring tones for your family, friends or coworkers when you want to screen calls during off-hours. Ease up on instant messaging so you don't create the expectation that you're available 24/7. Avoid working right up until the moment you leave and head back to work right off the vacation. If possible, schedule an extra-day cushion before you depart and another when you return to ease back in. On vacation, alternate your time between staying active and restorative rest. A walk on the beach combined with five minutes of meditation both give you a biochemical boost. Activity raises endorphins. Quieting your mind stimulates the part of your brain that dampens the surges of adrenaline and cortisol accompanying stress. Choose a colleague you trust to manage day-to-day tasks during your absence, and make sure your coworkers know you'll be away. Designate a point person to be contacted on your voicemail and out-of-office email only on matters you want to be bothered about. Avery Morgan, workplace productivity expert and CHRO at Edubirdie, shares four easy-to-follow tips to help you stay focused, creative and one step ahead, without sacrificing the whole 'workation' vibe. "Your golden window of uninterrupted time, without Slack texts, emails and Whatnot, is while everyone else is sleeping, scrolling or sightseeing," Morgan explains. "Early mornings and late nights are your most productive window. No pings, no loud Zoom calls or zero distractions. Just you, your work and your full focus." "Besides, depending on your time zone vs. your team's, you might be able to sneak in deep work while everyone else is unavailable," she adds. 'So swap that midday hustle for some quiet early morning sessions--or whatever non-peak groove works.' "Travel time doesn't have to be downtime," Morgan says. "In fact, being on flights, trains and ferries is a perfect excuse to disconnect from meetings and dig into some much-needed big thinking." "No Wi-Fi? That can actually work in your favor!" she suggests. 'Jot down ideas, brainstorm projects, map out your goals--whatever your brain's been too busy to do lately. Pro tip: keep a tiny notebook or your Notes app handy. You'd be surprised how many good ideas hit when you're 30,000 feet in the air with no distractions in sight.' "Nothing disrupts your flow faster than bad Wi-Fi or a forgotten charger," Morgan warns. "Before you head out, test your hotspot, download offline backups of key files and make sure you've got your gear--adapters, headphones, chargers the works." "Scouting work-friendly spots at your destination is yet another way to streamline your processes," she advises. 'Know where the solid Wi-Fi is, have a backup location and steer clear of being the one scrambling for a charger in a noisy café with no signal.' "It's easy to blur the lines on a working trip," Morgan points out. 'If you don't set boundaries, work will bleed into your personal time and suck the joy out of your trip." She recommends blocking out active hours and downtime as well. "In your scheduled 'unplug' time, go sightseeing, take a nap or relax--just make sure when you're done for the day, you're really done. Protect your rest time like your productivity depends on it, because it really does." The beauty of smart workcations is that you gift yourself the freedom and to not just relax and play, but to do both. 'Try switching it up," Morgan says. "A cozy café in the morning, co-working space in the afternoon and beachside brainstorming in the evening. Different environments bring different vibes, and fresh vibes bring fresh energy.'
