Merged districts in KP: PM reiterates commitment to establishing peace and security
He was speaking at a jirga convened at the Prime Minister's House, which was attended by a delegation led by Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman. The meeting focused on issues concerning law and order, governance, and development in the merged districts.
In a key announcement, Sharif said that the government had decided to restore educational quotas for students from the merged districts in medical and engineering institutions.
The announcement was met with appreciation by tribal elders, who described it as a significant step towards equitable access to higher education.
'It gives me great pleasure to host you today,' Sharif said while addressing the delegation. 'The tribal areas are steeped in history and tradition. The people of these regions have rendered unmatched sacrifices for the cause of national peace and security.'
Sharif paid tribute to the military, police, and law enforcement agencies for their role in combating terrorism. 'Their unwavering resolve continues to be a source of strength for the country,' he remarked.
Calling for unity across the political and religious spectrum, the prime minister urged all stakeholders to contribute to making Pakistan a peaceful and stable state.
Outlining his government's development priorities, Sharif said a special focus was being placed on improving education, healthcare, skills training, and employment opportunities, particularly for youth in the merged districts.
He announced that this year's federal development budget included allocations for the upgrading of the FATA University and improvements in police infrastructure.
The prime minister also directed the expansion of the federal committee on merged districts, chaired by Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs, Gilgit-Baltistan and Frontier Regions, Amir Muqam. The committee will now include representation from tribal elders to ensure inclusive decision making.
The visiting delegation expressed appreciation for the government's efforts and welcomed the restoration of quotas and the expanded mandate of the committee. They also lauded the armed forces for their 'strategic and courageous' response during recent tensions with India.
Concluding the meeting, Sharif assured the tribal elders of continued engagement and regular consultative sessions aimed at addressing the region's socio-economic challenges.
The jirga was attended by federal ministers, Ahsan Iqbal, Azam Nazeer Tarar, Attaullah Tarar, Awais Leghari, Amir Muqam, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, and advisers, Parvez Khattak, Dr Tauqir Shah, and others.

Ministers lead Youm-e-Istehsal Kashmir rallies

Hurriyat leader Parvez Ahmed thanked the Sindh Government and PPP for amplifying Kashmir's voice globally, recalling Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's pledge to fight for Kashmir's freedom.

Rallies mark Youm-e-Istehsal Kashmir across Sindh

Citizens, students, officials, and civil society members united in a powerful display of support for the Kashmiri people's right to self-determination. In Sukkur, a massive rally led by Deputy Commissioner Nadir Shahzad Khan began at Municipal Stadium and concluded at the Sukkur Press Club. Participants, including district officials, political leaders, and students, waved Kashmiri flags and held placards reading "Kashmir will become Pakistan." DC Khan condemned India's unilateral actions and reaffirmed Pakistan's unwavering support for Kashmiris. Larkana's Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University observed the day with a solemn walk from Chandka Medical College to Benazir Chowk. Under the guidance of Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Nusrat Shah, students and faculty highlighted the resilience of Kashmiris and held a minute of silence to honor their sacrifices. Speakers emphasised the need to amplify Kashmir's voice globally. In Hyderabad, Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS) organised a spirited rally led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Ikram Din Ujjan. Prof. Ujjan praised Pakistan's armed forces and called India's actions in Kashmir illegal and against UN resolutions, asserting that Pakistan stands firmly with its Kashmiri brethren. Meanwhile, in Matiari, a grand rally led by Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Yousif Shaikh began at Taluka Hospital and ended at the Press Club. Government officials, students, and citizens joined in, chanting slogans and playing national songs. DC Shaikh condemned the ongoing oppression in Kashmir and stressed that peace in the region hinges on a just resolution of the Kashmir issue. Across Sindh, the message was clear: the people of Pakistan stand united with Kashmir, committed to justice, freedom, and international advocacy for their cause.

Govt clears Quetta flights for Shia pilgrims
The federal government has authorised direct flights from Quetta to facilitate pilgrims travelling to Iran and Iraq for Arbaeen, Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif announced in the National Assembly on Tuesday. During the session — chaired by Speaker Ayaz Sadiq — the house unanimously passed two resolutions marking Youm-e-Istehsal, condemning atrocities in the Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Meanwhile, opposition members continued their protest over the conviction of senior party leaders in May 9 cases. Some federal ministers responded by mocking the PTI-led protest movement, while the law minister reiterated the government's offer for dialogue. In a policy statement, Defence Minister Asif highlighted the security threats faced by pilgrims along the 800-kilometre overland route from Quettaparticularly the risk of terrorist attacks in Balochistan. "To mitigate these risks, the federal government has authorised direct flights from Quetta for Arbaeen pilgrims," he said, adding that one flight had already commenced, with additional daily services planned to meet demand. Asif said all licensed private airlines had been invited to operate on the route, and permission was also granted for chartered flights to maximise capacity. He noted that Iran had approved an additional flight for Pakistani pilgrims following discussions during the Iranian president's recent visit. "The government is committed to ensuring safe, comfortable, and timely transportation for all Arbaeen pilgrims," the minister added. Resolution on Kashmir The house unanimously adopted two resolutions, condemning India's actions in IIOJK on Youm-e-Istehsal-e-Kashmir, marking the sixth anniversary of India's revocation of Articles 370 and 35A. The resolutions were moved by Pakistan Peoples Party's (PPP) Shazia Marri and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz's Amir Muqam. However, the proceedings were marred by opposition protests, which accused the government of stifling dissent. Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry criticised the PTI's protest, stating, "Today is for Kashmir, but you are observing Youm-e-Istehsal-e-Imran." He accused PTI of exploiting the session for political gains, prompting opposition uproar. PTI protest PTI's Aamir Dogar accused the government of "political victimisation," claiming that 10 National Assembly members were "picked up" but the speaker did not take any action. Demanding justice, he said that the PTI founder was in jail for refusing to budge. Speaker Sadiq countered, saying that he had issued the production orders. The speaker also apprised the house of PTI MNA Sheikh Waqas Akram's unexplained absence for 40 days, saying that under Article 64 his seat could be declared vacant. PML-N's Nosheen Iftikhar moved a motion to declare Akram's seat vacant, however, Deputy Speaker Ghulam Mustafa Shah stressed the need for seeing whether the motion followed the rules.
