Cavalry FC's offence electric in six-game unbeaten soccer run

Article content
Cavalry FC is pushing through the 2025 soccer season with both feet forward these days.
Article content
Article content
The proof of that is in the stats.
Article content
After Sunday's 4-0 shut down of visiting Valour FC, Cavalry is running hot on a six-game undefeated streak and outscoring its opposition 20-2 in those matches.
Article content
Electric stuff.
Article content
'It's about energy,' agreed Cavalry gaffer Tommy Wheeldon Jr. of the productivity surging through his charges. 'I think that's how we play as a team. We've just got that amount of energy.

'You've got to share it, you know? Energy is transferable.'

The run began April 29 with a 6-0 knock-out of Edmonton Scottish United SC in the first round of the Canadian Championship.
Article content
Then it was domination in three straight Canadian Premier League matches — a 2-1 win over host York United FC on May 2, a 3-0 blitz of host HFX Wanderers FC on May 10 and a 4-0 skunk of visiting Pacific FC on May 17.
Article content
On May 21, the Cavs drew 1-1 with Vancouver FC — for their only blemish in the unbeaten string — to open the second round of the Canadian Championship.
Article content
And then it was a return to their winning — and scoring ways — in Sunday's matinee at ATCO Field.
Article content
'Different scorers, too,' Wheeldon said. 'I think against Scottish — six goals, six different scorers. Pacific — four goals, four different scorers. Today — four goals, four different scorers.'
Article content
Levi Laing scored the Cavs' first goal 14 minutes into Sunday's affair.

Sergio Camargo extended the lead by two in the 50th minute.
Article content
Just 10 minutes later, it was Toby Warschewski with another Cavs goal — a highlight-reel one.
Article content
And teammate Ali Musse rounded out scoring with a strike in the 72nd minute.
Article content
'We're sharing the spoils,' said Cavalry GM/head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. 'I think we've got to look at the back to the front … The guys are giving us the strength at the back.
Article content
'We're making blocks and interceptions, forcing the other team to shoot from range and weren't allowing them into our box. Then that allows our front line now to have a go at them with the gaps they were leaving — and we could exploit them.'
Article content
Warschewski has converted in every game during the run, while Musse has five goals in the six such matches.
Article content
Even more impressive is it's 15 goals in the last 16 games for Warschewski.
Article content
'He's enjoying his football,' said Wheeldon, of last year's CPL Golden Boot award winner as the league's leading scorer. 'I think we often complicate things as coaches — we can give them principles about how we want to play with and without the ball. At the end of day, there's still a kid inside that just wants to play football, and we've brought that player out in him.

‘The talent and the quality is there'

A lacklustre start to the year has Valour FC on pace to finish dead last in the Canadian Premier League for a third straight year. Through eight league matches, Winnipeg's professional soccer club is 1-5-2 for six points, but they do have an opportunity to climb out of the basement and into seventh place if they can pick up a win Wednesday morning against Vancouver FC (1-4-3) at Princess Auto Stadium. Despite the discouraging start, Valour defender Gianfranco Facchineri believes the group can turn things around. Daniel Crump / Free Press Files Winnipeg Valour midfielder Diogo Dias da Ressurreição (left) takes the ball from Wanderers midfielder Sean Rea. The Valour lost their home-opener in a heartbreaker in stoppage time to Halifax in April. 'Confidence is high in the locker room right now. Now it's a matter of putting everything in our process together and stringing some results together,' said Facchineri on Tuesday. 'Every game is incredibly important, but (Wednesday) is a game against a team where we're very clearly in a playoff push with… It's one on the calendar you look at and (we) would love to walk away with three points… I think we've had to iron out some buffs and I think we've done that now.' 'I believe now is a time where this team will pick itself up and give our fans something to be proud of.' It would help tremendously if Valour could find the back of the net. They've only scored six times in CPL play, whereas first-place Atlético Ottawa (5-1-3) has 24 goals in nine matches. Valour's last outing was a scoreless draw against visiting Pacific FC on Sunday. Forward Shaan Hundal and defender Kelsey Egwu lead the Winnipeg side with two goals apiece. 'We've had good chances and we've gotten to those last 30 yards. And sometimes you just have to make that right decision at the right time instead of taking those 30-yard shots,' said head coach and general manager Phillip Dos Santos. 'I think the talent and the quality is there. We just have to find a way and make sure it happens sooner than later.' Valour has shown flashes that they can play at a high level. There's no better example than May 20 when they earned a 2-2 draw against the Vancouver Whitecaps of the MLS in the Canadian Championship quarterfinal at home in what was arguably the club's most impressive result in their seven-year history. Valour will meet the Whitecaps again in the second leg at BC Place on July 9. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. The top five teams at the end of the 28-game season will qualify for the CPL playoffs. Valour is still on the hunt for its first post-season berth. 'We know that the margins are very slim in this league,' said Dos Santos. 'Apart from Pacific, we still play everyone three times so things could change very fast and it's on us to make that happen.' Michael Bradley, David Edgar join Canada as guest coaches during June FIFA window

Article content Bradley will only be with Canada for the Halifax camp while Edgar, an assistant coach with the Canadian Premier League's Forge FC, will also be in Toronto. The 37-year-old Bradley, who won 151 caps for the U.S. from 2006 to 2019, retired after the 2023 MLS season, his 10th with Toronto. After retiring, he joined father Bob Bradley's coaching staff at Norway's Stabaek. The 38-year-old Edgar won 42 caps for Canada from 2011 to 2018. The defender retired at the end of the 2020 CPL season with Forge after a career that included stops in Canada with the Ottawa Fury and Vancouver Whitecaps, as well as stints in England (Newcastle, Burnley, Huddersfield Town, Sheffield United, Hartlepool), the U.S. (Nashville SC) and Wales (Swansea City). Marsch, who played for Bob Bradley at D.C. United and the Chicago Fire, has made a habit of bringing in guest coaches to Canada camps. Others previously invited included CPL coaches Mauro Eustaquio (York United) and Patrice Gheisar (Halifax Wanderers) and former Canadian internationals Dwayne De Rosario, Paul Stalteri and Martin Nash.

As 2026 FIFA World Cup looms, CRTC dispute between OneSoccer and Rogers drags on

As the one-year countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup looms, a fight to open the door to a wider TV audience for Canadian soccer drags on. On one side is OneSoccer, the subscription streaming service that carries Canadian national team games as well as the Canadian Premier League and Canadian Championship. On the other is telecom giant Rogers Communications Canada Inc., which has refused to carry OneSoccer.
