Shoes for the homeless, year 33: Guarantee Shoes rustles up 8,000 pairs for the needy

Yahoo21-05-2025

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) – If you're like most people, you've got too many shoes – colors, fits, and styles that just don't work for you anymore.
If you're a typical resident of one of Bakersfield's homeless centers, you very likely don't have enough decent shoes.
Maybe none at all.
The solution would seem obvious enough.
It did for Rosco Rolnick, 33 years ago.
That's when the third generation owner of Guarantee Shoe Center launched his Shoes for Our Homeless Shoe Drive.
In a third of a century, the downtown Bakersfield institution has collected 120,000 new and used shoes, coordinating with the Open Door Network to distribute footwear to the unhoused and victims of domestic violence. In 2025, the effort collected 8,000 pairs of shoes.
Bail granted to driver in fatal Westside Parkway crash
That's 16,000 shoes for the math-challenged among us.
Collection was a huge undertaking. Now comes the equally daunting task of distribution.
Lauren Skidmore of the Open Door Network can explain how it works.
'We are going to distribute this among the entire homeless population,' she said at Tuesday's press conference announcing the collection total. 'We'll make sure that every shelter has access to a quality pair of shoes for each of their clients. We know we have over 1,000 individuals in shelters right now. We're going to make sure they have access to these shoes and then there are 8,000 pairs of shoes that we're receiving today so we're going to be able to store the shoes and keep them throughout the year for new clients that are coming in.'
Skidmore's agency serves more than the homeless, noted supporter Nona Darling.
'Not only is it homeless people who need shoes but also survivors of domestic violence, human trafficking,' she said. 'They're all served by the Open Door Network.'
Anyone can help, according to Jim Darling, who has helped coordinate the shoe drive for years.
'Everybody has a pair of shoes they bought, that I bought, that you bought, that sit in our closet,' he said. 'We think they're (no longer) cool, they are not comfortable, they don't fit right, they're out of style, whatever it is, but they're good, usable shoes that someone in need would really appreciate.'
Rolnick, who's been at the corner of 21st and Chester these many decades, is grateful for the continuing community support.
'It's just heartwarming to know that I can change somebody's life with a decent pair of shoes,' he said. 'Some worn, some new. It's just been incredible.'
First you're hearing of this worthy cause? Guarantee Shoe Center is collecting your wearable used shoes year-round. Just drop them at the downtown store at 2101 Chester Ave.

Another Rite Aid location to close in Bakersfield as chain whittles itself down by 500 stores nationwide

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — One by one, it may seem, Bakersfield-area Rite Aid stores are closing, part of a series of shutdowns as the 1,200-store chain scales back its nationwide footprint amid its second bankruptcy in as many years. The Philadelphia-based company, once the third-largest drug store chain in the country, announced Tuesday it was closing its store at Ming and South H, putting 21 jobs in jeopardy – this, just a day after it formalized the pending closure, in about a month, of stores at Mount Vernon and Bernard Street and Panama Lane near Old River Road. It was also announced the location at 11200 Olive Drive would be closing on July 7. Altogether, Rite Aid announced 111 store closures Tuesday, bringing the grand total to 500 thus far, nationwide. GoFundMe created for family of woman allegedly killed by ex-partner during graduation party Shelves were almost barren and customers were few at the Rite Aid on South H, and employees indicated off camera that additional Bakersfield area Rite Aids would eventually close. That certainly looked to be possible at the downtown Rite Aid at 23rd and H, where shelves were as barren as those on South H. Fans of Rite Aid's iconic Thrifty ice cream counter had to be disappointed – that show is over, although the downtown store had cartons of a half dozen flavors still in the freezer case. Thrifty ice cream, for now anyway, appears to be a do it yourself affair. The news is better for Rite Aid's pharmacy operation. Rite Aid said on May 15th it 'successfully entered into a series of sale agreements and pharmacy services transition agreements' that will transfer pharmacy assets from more than 1,000 Rite Aid locations to CVS Pharmacy, Walgreens, Albertsons, Kroger and other operators. What becomes of Rite Aid's physical stores and its employees is less clear. Rite Aid has said it will transfer affected employees wherever possible. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Tastries owner to ask U.S. Supreme Court to hear case after state court declines to hear appeal

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Cathy Miller, owner of Tastries Bakery, is seeking to have the U.S. Supreme Court hear her case after the California Supreme Court this week declined to hear an appeal in the yearslong saga, which has as its focus whether she discriminated against a gay couple by refusing to bake them a wedding cake. 'Cathy has always been clear that she was only trying to follow her faith and her conscience in standing up for what she believes in — and did so in a respectful, polite, and loving way,' Charles LiMandri, partner at LiMandri & Jonna LLP and Thomas More Society special counsel, said in a news release. 'While it is disappointing the California Supreme Court has refused to correct the injustice Cathy has endured, we hope the U.S. Supreme Court will chart a different path and restore Cathy's religious liberty,' he said. In 2017, Miller refused to bake a wedding cake for Eileen and Mireya Rodriguez Del-Rio after learning their sexual orientation. They sued her. 'Still being considered': DHS says reports of Bakersfield girl being deported are false State attorneys argued at trial Miller discriminated against the couple, while Miller's attorneys said she's a devout Christian who believes baking a wedding cake for a same-sex couple would violate her religious beliefs. They also argued the creation of a wedding cake is a form of artistic expression — and Miller can't be compelled to create a work of art against her will. Superior Court Judge Eric Bradshaw ruled in Miller's favor, finding her 'pure and expressive speech is entitled to protection under the First Amendment' and the baking of a Tastries wedding cake is 'labor-intensive' and 'artistic.' The state appealed, and in December a state appeals court reversed Bradshaw's ruling, finding the bakery's refusal to sell a wedding cake to a same-sex couple established 'intentional discrimination.' The California Supreme Court on Wednesday denied to hear an appeal. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
