Mohammad Nawaz's three-wicket over led Pakistan to a 14-run win over West Indies in the opening T20 in Florida. Saim Ayub scored 57, earning player of the match.
Mohammad Nawaz's impressive three-wicket haul in an over led Pakistan to a 14-run victory over West Indies in the opening match of the Twenty20 series in Florida on Thursday.
Sent in to bat first, Pakistan posted a total of 178 for six, bolstered by Saim Ayub's brisk 57 from 38 balls.
Reflecting on the match, Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha said, 'It was a great game, we assessed the conditions well, batted and finished well, we started well with the ball, the middle overs were outstanding and the spinners were superb.
'We didn't take a wicket in the first 10 overs, but we controlled the game. The 11th over, we got three wickets and that was the turning point. Once the ball got older, it was tough to bat against spin and I was waiting for the moment.
'The pitch was the same for both teams – you could score against the new ball, but once the ball went old, it started to grip and turn for the spinners, making batting very difficult."
Questions about whether Pakistan's score was above or below par at this venue were partially answered when West Indies openers Johnson Charles and 18-year-old rookie Jewel Andrew managed a run rate of just over six an over until the halfway point in their chase.
After conceding 20 runs in his first three overs, left-arm spinner Nawaz dramatically changed the course of the match. In the 12th over, he dismissed Andrew for 35, ending a 72-run opening stand, and then claimed the wickets of Charles (35) and Gudakesh Motie (0) on the fourth and fifth deliveries, reducing the West Indies to 75-3.
Skipper Shai Hope (2) then scooped a full delivery from Ayub into the deep in the next over, leading to West Indies losing four wickets for just five runs. Ayub was named player of the match for his half-century and bowling figures of 2-20.
Some powerful late hitting from Jason Holder, who smashed four sixes in his unbeaten 30 off 12 balls, and Shamar Joseph, who contributed 21 from 12, helped West Indies reach 164-7, making the final margin more respectable.
This one-sided contest quashed any hopes of the West Indies beginning the series against Pakistan on a positive note, following their recent comprehensive defeats in both Test and T20 series against Australia, who had completed a historic 8-0 sweep in the Caribbean earlier in the week.

Michael Vaughan Slams England's Team Selection: 'If It Was Easy, Anyone...'

Curated By : Rudransh Khurana Last Updated: August 02, 2025, 13:52 IST Michael Vaughan (AP Photo) Former England captain Michael Vaughan has slammed Brendon McCullum and the team's decision to pick Jacob Bethell for the final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Vaughan said England were throwing undercooked players into the 'hotbed of international cricket', thinking it was 'easy'. He believes that it'll only end up hurting Bethell and other such cricketers' careers in the long term. Bethell had played only two Tests before coming in as Ben Stokes' replacement at the Oval. Out of his last ten matches, only one was a First-Class game, against Somerset in the County Championship Division 1 in June. Overall, known more as a white-ball talent, Bethell has played 24 First-Class matches, scoring 1030 runs at 28.61 and picking 12 wickets at 70. At the Oval, he was outfoxed to an LBW by a Mohammed Siraj yorker for 6 (14). 'It has been an epic. It really has been a brilliant series, and I think this England side, on this kind of pitch, I like the way that they played today," Vaughan told the BBC after the second day's play. 'The only thing I say is in terms of their selection, they have picked players who have been playing no cricket. And to throw them into this hotbed of international cricket in front of this amount of people, with so many more watching, not just here but on TV screens around the world, it isn't an easy game. If it was that easy, anyone could play Test match cricket. If you're throwing a 21-year-old into this situation on the back of one first-class match in our summer, I find that absolutely extraordinary. I don't think you're giving a kid the best chance of succeeding at this level," he added. Swipe Left For Next Video View all Bethell was only one of several changes England made for the match. They also brought back Jamie Overton, Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue into the team. While Atkinson was recovering from an injury for the first four Tests, and Tongue was already with the squad, Overton came off six straight games with Surrey. Stumps were called when India were 75/2, ahead by 52 runs in the Test. view comments News cricket Michael Vaughan Slams England's Team Selection: 'If It Was Easy, Anyone...'
