Wildlife homes boost biodiversity in greenbelts

The Randpark Ridge Village Association (RRVA) is leading an exciting greenbelt project by installing owl boxes and bat hotels across the area. This forms part of the RRVA's long-term commitment to protecting the local ecosystem and encouraging natural pest control.
'These owl and bat boxes are more than just wooden shelters; they're part of our vision to keep the greenbelt as natural and healthy as possible,' says RRVA admin Nerisha Govender.
Owls, especially barn owls and spotted eagle owls, are powerful allies in controlling rodent numbers. A single owl can eat up to 1 000 rodents a year. By installing owl boxes in suitable locations, the RRVA is creating safe nesting sites that encourage these birds to remain in the area, thereby reducing the need for harmful pesticides.

Bats, too, are vital. They consume hundreds of insects per hour, including mosquitoes and crop pests. Urban growth has reduced their natural roosting spaces, but the RRVA's bat hotels give them a place to rest and raise their young safely.
'These efforts support biodiversity, reduce the need for chemicals, and help restore balance in our greenbelt,' Govender says. 'We are proud to take the lead in creating thriving corridors for wildlife in the heart of our suburb.'
The RRVA encourages residents to support the project and learn more about these incredible species. A helpful Batty About Bats info sheet is available for anyone interested in getting involved or understanding more.

They were honoured for their exceptional contribution to the lives of the Mount Edgecombe community and its surroundings, illuminating paths of hope in education, culture, religion, and various other fields. Govender, the principal at Acacia Full Service School, has dedicated over 38 years to teaching, in which time he impacted the lives of many youngsters. During the award ceremony, Dr Patchie Naicker, the chairperson of MEECA, hailed Govender's extraordinary dedication to the community, stating, 'His passion, ethics, and magnanimous effort did not go unnoticed, and his selfless legacy inspires others endlessly.' The accolade was indicative of Govender's impact and influence on the community, and he expressed his appreciation in return. 'The values and traditions of our community have played a pivotal role in shaping who I am today,' he remarked. Govender also received the Ammen Award for excellence in education in April 2023. 'To receive such an award in the presence of my staff, management, and learners affirms my life's philosophy. Work is worship and service to man is service to God,'' said Govender. Dakota Beach crèche battles crime and decay

LINDOKUHLE Daycare Centre at the Dakota Beach informal settlement is facing immense hardships that include break-ins, deteriorating infrastructure, and fires that constantly raze the neighbouring buildings. Also read: Fire destroys shacks at Dakota Beach informal settlement One of the centre's teachers, Mollie Govender, showed the SUN what remains of it after thieves helped themselves to air-conditioner units. Rust has also eaten away at the shipping containers, which are used as learning areas. 'It's unsafe for us and the children. The roof caved in at the classroom, and whenever it rains, water drenches everything, including the food we cook for the children,' said Govender. Lindokuhle Daycare Centre was built using donated materials, but the donations have dried up. One of the few people who has continuously donated is Amanzimtoti resident, Dennii Dorning, who has often shared whatever she could with the centre. Her most recent acts of kindness were on Mandela Day when she bought each of the 35 children a tracksuit outfit, socks, and snacks. 'This daycare centre is close to my heart, and I care deeply about these precious babies and their teachers. We are looking for more people to donate and help make their lives a bit easier. Any form of donation would be appreciated,' said Dorning. For more information on how to donate, contact Govender on 074 959 3666, or Dorning on 082 443 3791.
