
Minimum wage extended to contract apprentices as amended act takes effect
In a statement, the Human Resources Ministry said Minister Steven Sim had set Aug 1, 2025, as the commencement date for the amendments.
"Under the amendment, the current minimum wage now applies to apprenticeship contract workers, in line with the government's commitment to enhancing protection and welfare for all categories of workers," the statement read.
An apprenticeship contract refers to an agreement in which an employer undertakes to employ and systematically train a person in a specific trade, ranging from six to 24 months, during which the apprentice is bound to work for the employer.
The ministry also expressed appreciation to employers who had already been paying the minimum wage to apprenticeship workers ahead of the legal requirement.
It then reminded employers paying wages above the minimum rate that they are not permitted to reduce salaries to match the statutory threshold.
The ministry announced that the Minimum Wage Order 2024 will take effect on Aug 1, 2025, setting a minimum wage of RM1,700 per month for employers with fewer than five employees who are not engaged in professional activities classified under the Malaysian Standard Classification of Occupations 2020.
The ministry urged employers to comply with the minimum wage laws enforced by the Peninsular Malaysia Department of Labour, Sabah Labour Department and the Sarawak Labour Department.
Employers found guilty of failing to do so face fines of up to RM10,000 for each affected worker, the statement concluded.– BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR: The Human Resources Ministry is conducting a feasibility study on implementing a minimum wage for graduates, aimed at ensuring fair starting salaries that reflect their qualifications and skills. Its minister, Steven Sim, said the study, carried out through the National Wages Consultative Council, is a comprehensive effort crucial to addressing salary expectations among younger workers, particularly those from Generation Z and Y (millennials), who now make up the majority of the country's labour force. "The study is important to ensure that graduates, the majority of whom are from the Generation Z and millennial cohorts, receive starting salaries that are commensurate with their qualifications. "This includes ensuring their income is aligned with their academic qualifications and skills and is also relevant to the current challenge of rising living costs. "The findings and related policy proposals will be submitted to the government once finalised," he said in a written parliamentary reply published today. He was responding to Young Syefura Othman (PH-Bentong), who enquired about the government's intervention plan to improve the wage structure in employment sectors dominated by Generation Z and millennials, who are currently facing a high cost of living. Citing the 2023 Salaries and Wages Survey Report by the Statistics Department, Sim said 76 per cent of the 10.1 million wage earners are aged between 15 and 44. He said graduates aged 15 to 29, representing Generation Z, currently earn an estimated median monthly salary of between RM1,529 and RM2,076. Meanwhile, those aged 30 to 44, representing millennials, earn between RM2,702 and RM3,381. "The young workforce, which makes up the majority of the country's labour market, holds significant potential to be empowered through government policy interventions that support the improvement of their well-being and competitiveness in the future economy. "In this regard, the government has taken several strategic measures to address the issue of wage structure and ensure a fairer distribution of income, including the implementation of the Minimum Wage Order, the Productivity-Linked Wage System and the Progressive Wage Policy."

Gold Prices Slip 0.38% In Malaysia Despite Global Bullish Outlook

The decline comes as COMEX gold continued its rebound globally, gaining US$26.30 to settle at US$3,399.50, extending its rally for a third straight session. According to RHB Investment Bank Bhd (RHB Research), the metal closed firmly above its 20- and 50-day simple moving averages, signalling bullish momentum. RHB Research said the relative strength index (RSI) has crossed above the 50% mark, indicating stronger upside potential, with resistance targeted at US$3,450 and higher at US$3,600, while support is seen at US$3,250. The research house advised traders to maintain long positions, first initiated at US$3,402.40, with a stop-loss at US$3,150. Despite the local pullback, analysts expect sentiment to remain positive as global technical indicators suggest further upside for gold in the near term.

Malaysia's latest corporate earnings season kicks off
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's quarterly corporate earnings season is underway, with listed companies on Bursa Malaysia beginning to release their second quarter (Q2) results throughout August. Investors and traders are keenly watching the financial disclosures to recalibrate their strategies amid a mix of macroeconomic resilience and evolving sector-specific dynamics. Rakuten Trade said early indicators point to continued strength in banking, technology, consumer and utilities. Select counters are expected to deliver resilient earnings, supported by stable demand, cost optimisation and regional tailwinds. Banks are likely to benefit from sustained interest income strength. Meanwhile, technology stocks especially those linked to global semiconductor and AI value chains are showing early signs of recovery. "Our initial review of Q2 results and guidance from key players shows encouraging signs in financial services and selected export-oriented technology stocks," said Kenny Yee, head of research at Rakuten Trade. "With the ringgit remaining relatively stable and consumer sentiment improving, we also anticipate a moderate rebound in consumer-facing stocks. "Traders should closely track updates from banking heavyweights, large-cap tech, and staple consumer names to position for medium-term growth," Yee added. Among early reporters this quarter, Fraser & Neave Holdings Bhd posted a 15.16 per cent year-on-year decline in Q2FY25 net profit to RM140.3 million. This was attributed to higher tax expenses, startup losses from its dairy operations, and softer revenue. Westports Holdings Bhd's Q2FY25 net profit grew 15 per cent YoY to RM231 million thanks to higher throughput. Axis-REIT's net income rose 20.5 per cent YoY to RM46.9 million, driven by higher property income. Meanwhile, Hartalega Holdings Bhd's Q1 2026 net profit dipped 60 per cent YoY to RM12.6 million due to weaker average selling prices, stronger ringgit and lower capacity utilisation. With investor sentiment expected to fluctuate throughout August, Rakuten Trade encourages market participants to leverage its digital-first trading platform to capture opportunities across both local and foreign markets.
