Crystal Palace fans protest against Europa League ejection
Palace qualified for this season's Europa League courtesy of their shock win over Manchester City in the FA Cup final in May, which secured a historic first major trophy.
But they missed a March 1 deadline to demonstrate that American co-owner John Textor, also a part-owner at Lyon, had no control or influence over more than one club in the same competition.
UEFA's Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) decided Textor's interest in both clubs meant only one could enter the Europa League, with Lyon's higher league position edging out Palace.
Palace are weighing up their options in response and admitted they could appeal UEFA's verdict at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Textor has agreed to sell his shareholding in Palace to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson. He has also stepped down as Lyon president, but remains co-owner.
Nottingham Forest are expected to replace the Eagles in the Europa League after finishing seventh in the Premier League last season although this has not yet been confirmed by UEFA.
Palace chairman Steve Parish declared it 'a bad day for football' and 'a terrible injustice' after the club were demoted to the Conference League having fallen foul of UEFA's rules on multi-club ownership.
A petition urging UEFA to reconsider and reinstate Palace back in the Europa League has been signed by more than 3,000 people since being created on Friday.

Liverpool are eyeing Hugo Ekitike as an alternative up front should they fail in pursuit of Isak and the Eintracht Frankfurt forward is said to have agreed personal terms with the Merseyside giants. The incessant rumours have threatened to overshadow Elanga's arrival in the North East and it remains to be seen if the former Nottingham Forest winger will have the chance to link up with his fellow countryman next season. But speaking to Sky Sports, Elanga made it clear he planned to ignore the gossip and was instead looking forward to strengthening the 'amazing' bond he had formed with Isak at international level. 'If you you look at this team and what they did last season, it played a huge part in me coming,' he said. 'You look at the likes of Tino [Livramento], Lewis [Hall], Sven [Botman], Fabian [Schar], Bruno [Guimaraes], Sandro [Tonali], I could go through the whole team. What they did last season was amazing, having played against them home and away from Nottingham Forest. 'A player like Alex… everyone wants to play with Alex. For me, he's one of the best strikers in the world and having played with him at international level, I can really, really say that. 'There are always going to be things and rumours around the world, but, for me, he's a top guy and a top player. 'From playing with him at international level and training with him now, it's amazing.' Elanga is grateful for the support he has received since joining Newcastle and is relishing the opportunity to showcase his ability and talent when the new season gets underway. 'I know a lot of the lads here and I think that's played a part in me coming here,' the Sweden international added. 'Not just that, but I've talked about the gaffer and I think he's helped a lot in this instance. 'The club is a big club with a big fanbase so all of that has played a massive role in me coming here.' Joshua Zirkzee is a summer target for Atalanta and a former senior figure at Old Trafford is hoping to help secure the move. Zirkzee only joined the Red Devils last year in a £36.5m deal, signing a five-year contract at Old Trafford. He made a bright start, scoring on his debut for the club, but that winner against Fulham was one of only three Premier League goals all season. In total the Netherlands international scored seven times in 49 appearances in all competitions in what turned out to be a disastrous campaign for the club. The 24-year-old was mainly used behind the centre-forward by Ruben Amorim but it is not entirely clear what is his best position and if he can fit into the manager's 3-4-3 system at all. Despite his underwhelming first season in England, there is interest in taking him back to Italy, where he had enjoyed a decent season with Bologna before the switch to Manchester. Zirkzee's last campaign in Serie A saw him score 11 top flight goals, which was enough for United to splash the cash on him. Italian publication Quotidiano report that Atalanta have made Zirkzee one of their primary targets this summer as they look to replace departing star players. Mateo Retegui was not only Atalanta's star performer but finished the season as Serie A top scorer having netted 25 times in the Italian top flight, but he is leaving to join Saudi side Al-Qadsiah. Ademola Lookman is also expected to depart this summer, with Inter Milan his most likely destination. Despite the significant outgoings, Atalanta will reportedly struggle to match Zirkzee's wages at Manchester United and even a relatively low asking price of around £30m will not be easy. However, they have a man who they hope will help in the negotiations, former Manchester United football director John Murtough. After over a decade at Old Trafford, Murtough left in April 2024 and in April this year he took up the role of director of global development at Atalanta.
