Fourth-year B Tech students body found hanging in IIT-KGP hostel room
Ritam Mondal (21), a student of mechanical engineering, was found hanging in his room at Rajendra Prasad (RP) Hall hostel building on the campus, an institute official told PTI.
The student, who hailed from Kolkata, had retired to his room after dinner on Thursday night, and there was no abnormality in his behaviour, one of his hostelmates said.
The IIT KGP official said that, as repeated knocks on his door did not evoke any response, in the morning, police at the outpost on the campus, accompanied by institute security guards, broke open the door at around 12 noon and found him hanging.
The student's family has been informed, the official said.
The student's death sent shockwaves through the campus.
On January 12, third-year electrical engineering student Shaon Malik, was found hanging in his hostel room. On April 20, final-year student of Ocean Engineering Aniket Walker was found dead in similar conditions.
On May 4, third-year B-Tech student Mohammad Asif Qamar was found dead in his hostel room.
Apart from installing bar codes on the gates of every hostel room where the helpline number of counselling services can be scanned by a student in emotional stress at any hour, the institute recently launched a 'Campus Mothers' programme — women faculty and staff members act to mentor students emotionally. Former Arsenal footballer Thomas Partey was granted conditional bail on Tuesday after appearing in a London court on rape and sexual assault charges. The 32-year-old Ghana international faces five counts of rape against two women and one count of sexual assault against a third woman. The alleged offences occurred between 2021 and 2022, during his time with Arsenal. Partey was charged on July 4, just four days after his contract with the Gunners expired at the end of June. Recent reports have linked Partey with a move to La Liga club Villarreal. During the discussion of bail conditions in court, Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring remarked, 'I understand he's no longer employed in this country and is now playing in Spain." Partey is due to appear at London's Old Bailey court on September 2. According to a report by Indian Express, Bhanu Tomar, an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) with Indore Police, harboured a festering grudge against his elder brother, Ajay Tomar since 2017, when Ajay shot and killed their father, Inspector Hanuman Tomar, over a family dispute and tried to kill Bhanu during the same attack. Bhanu received a compassionate appointment as an ASI in Indore after his father's murder while his brother was convicted and jailed. According to police, Ajay's imprisonment resulted in his divorce, and during that time, Bhanu sold their ancestral home — a move that triggered ongoing disputes over property and finances even after Ajay was released on parole on July 14 this year. This was exactly the opportunity Bhanu was waiting for. Driven by a need for vengeance, Bhanu devised a sinister plan. Indian Express reported that instead of confronting Ajay directly, Bhanu orchestrated a hit through social media: he contacted a shooter, Dharmendra Kushwah, over Instagram, offering him Rs 1 lakh for the job. Bhanu also lured Ajay by using a minor girl with a troubled background; she convinced Ajay to travel with her and, at a remote spot near Nayagaon Tiraha on July 23, asked him to pull over. Unaware of a plot to eliminate, Ajay followed instructions. Soon, Dharmendra arrived at the spot and shot Ajay dead. In a twist worthy of a crime thriller, Bhanu then performed his brother's last rites himself. However, just three days later, Bhanu vanished, fleeing to Bangkok using his passport in an attempt to slip beyond the reach of law. Meanwhile, police arrested Dharmendra, the minor girl, and an accomplice named Monesh Tomar. The murder weapon and some personal effects were recovered and during interrogation, Dharmendra confessed to his role in the killing. Crew controllers to be held liable for manipulating loco pilots' duty hours: East Central Railways
The East Central Railway (ECR) zone has cautioned its five divisions against manipulating loco pilots' working hours by falsely entering duty breaks in the online Crew Management System (CMS) to conceal overutilisation. This action follows allegations from the All India Loco Running Staff Association (AILRSA) regarding the practice, which violates railway norms limiting continuous work to nine hours. Remove Ads Stepping in to check the manipulation of working hours of loco pilots to hide their overutilisation, the East Central Railway (ECR) zone has warned all its five divisions against entering false duty breaks in the online Crew Management System In a circular issued to Sonpur, Danapur, Samastipur, Dhanbad and Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyay divisions on August 4, the principal chief electrical engineer of the ECR zone directed the officials concerned not to break duty hours of train crew in between sign-on and sign-off while entering it into the Crew Management System (CMS)."If any lobby is doing it, it should be stopped immediately. If such cases are found, crew controllers will be held liable for these," the circular August 2, PTI reported that the All India Loco Running Staff Association AILRSA ) has alleged that various railway zones are manipulating the working hours of train drivers by falsely entering duty breaks during their 12 to 16-hour trips in the online CMS to hide their to that, AILRSA general secretary Ashok Kumar Raut wrote to the ECR general manager and submitted a memorandum compiling several issues that affected loco pilots' working conditions, including the false trip alleged that the illegal and unsafe practice of inserting duty breaks in the system was being done on the verbal orders of some senior officials, such as the chief traction loco controller and the chief crew to Raut, Railways has outsourced CMS data entry work to private personnel and these officials instruct them to insert such Raut's representation, the ECR's Dhanbad division issued a circular on July 15 warning of strict action against the insertion of false duty breaks between sign-on and sign-off in the CMS."A direction is being issued to all to not break duty hours between the sign-on and sign-off of the crew while registering it in CMS. If it is happening in any crew lobby, it must be stopped immediately. If such cases are found, strict disciplinary action will be taken," the circular to the railway norms, a loco pilot cannot be asked to work for more than nine hours at a stretch and no more than 11 hours in total from sign-on to sign-off. Since 2021, the Safety Department of the Railway Board has instructed all zonal railways that 80 per cent of the trips should be completed within the nine-hour limit."I hope that this practice will stop now," Raut said.
