Elderly man on scooter killed by unlicensed, speeding motorcyclist

A Coroner has called out New Zealand's "persistent and troubling tolerance" for unlicensed driving after investigating the death of an elderly man who was struck by a motorcyclist while travelling on a mobility scooter.
The findings of Coroner Ian Telford have been released to the public on Wednesday.
He found Edward Duffy, 88,
died as a result of blunt force injuries
when the mobility scooter he was riding was struck by a motorcycle ridden by Colin Rondon who was unlicenced and speeding.
On November 21 2023, Duffy had been riding his mobility scooter across a pedestrian crossing in Rotorua town centre.
"As he was crossing - against a red pedestrian signal - he saw a motorcycle approaching at speed. In an attempt to avoid a collision, he turned his scooter. However, the motorcycle struck the left rear side of the scooter, throwing Mr Duffy to the ground. Mr Duffy died at the scene," the Coroner's report said.
On June 4 2025, Rondon was sentenced to three years and two months imprisonment in the Rotorua District Court after pleading guilty to charges of dangerous driving causing death.

He had eight previous offences for driving while disqualified or driving while his license was suspended or revoked. His driving had also attracted 105 incidents of demerit points.
Coroner Telford found Rondon had never held a motorcycle license.
"I perceive there to be a persistent and troubling degree of tolerance for unlicensed individuals using public roads in New Zealand," Telford said.
This had been a long-standing public safety concern for him, he said.
"No individual should be operating any kind of vehicle on public roads unless and until they have demonstrated to the state that they possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and judgement to do so safely.
"The licensing process exists precisely to ensure that all road users meet a minimum standard of competence before being entrusted with the responsibility of sharing the road."
In his final discussion, Telford appealed to New Zealanders to take the time to get properly trained and licensed before using a vehicle on public roads.
"These are not just legal requirements - they are essential safeguards for your life and the lives of others."

Prisoner comes down from Otago jail roof

Otago Corrections Facility general manager Dave Miller said the remand prisoner got up on the roof at 12.45pm on Wednesday. He voluntarily came down at 7.30am on Thursday. Miller said the prisoner would be "held to account". He has been placed in segregation and was being assessed. The prisoner's arm is believed have been injured while he was jumping around. Earlier, Corrections staff were talking with the prisoner.

Pair charged over cryptocurrency, jewellery robbery four years ago
Photo: 123rf Two people have been charged over a burglary in Auckland in 2021, after information from a private investigator gave "a line of enquiry" on cryptocurrency. Police said a sophisticated burglary took place on 9 September 2021, with the target being a safe inside a Westmere property. It contained $4 million in cryptocurrency, cash, jewellery and priceless family heirlooms. The victim had engaged a private investigator and in mid-2024 handed over a raft of information to police, Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Bolton said. "From this point it has given the Auckland City Financial Crime Unit a good starting point about what had happened with the cryptocurrency, and a line of enquiry. "Detective Oliver Moss chipped away at the case over many months, and this soon identified the person we will allege is responsible for the crime." On Wednesday, a team of detectives from the Auckland City FCU led by Detective Sergeant Ali Ramsay, with support from tactical police staff and the Auckland Cyber Crime Unit, executed a search warrant at a Wellsford address. A 31-year-old man was arrested and charged with the 2021 burglary, as well as four counts of money laundering $4m in cryptocurrency. A 30-year-old woman was jointly charged over the money laundering offences. Police seized electronic items for further investigation. Bolton said the investigation highlighted "new investigative possibilities with digital forensic evidence". "Detective Moss has worked tenaciously in putting the pieces together and identifying who Police will allege is responsible for this crime. "I'd like to acknowledge the ongoing commitment and investigative nouse of private investigator Michael Campbell in what has been a complex investigation." The pair were due to appear in the Auckland District Court on 26 August.

Armed police at Maketu for search in relation to death of Zain Matenga Taikato Fox

It is part of the investigation into the death of Zain Matenga Taikato Fox, who died after being brought in to Rotorua Hospital on 28 July with critical injuries . The operation followed searches in Maketū three weeks ago. "There is not believed to be any risk to public safety, however residents can expect to see some staff armed as a precaution," Detective Inspector Craig Rawlinson said. "Police have also engaged our iwi liaison officers, who will be in the township today, providing support and reassurance to locals." Cordons were in place, with a section of Maketū Road closed between Kaituna Road and Wilson Road North. Access in and out of Maketū was available via Wilson Road North.
