Gill to lead North Zone in Duleep Trophy after stellar England tour

News185 days ago
New Delhi, Aug 7 (PTI) Indian Test skipper Shubman Gill was on Thursday named captain of the North Zone squad for the upcoming Duleep Trophy, beginning August 28, less than three weeks after he led a young side to a thrilling 2-2 draw against England in a gruelling five-Test series.
The 24-year-old opener, who took over Test captaincy following the retirements of stalwarts Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin, was one of the standout performers on the England tour.
Gill led from the front, amassing 754 runs in the series — the second-highest by an Indian in a single Test series after Sunil Gavaskar's 774 in the 1971 tour of the West Indies — as India levelled the series 2-2 for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
Gill's appointment as North Zone skipper means he will be back in the domestic fold shortly after the energy-sapping England tour, which concluded on August 4.
North Zone face East Zone in their Duleep Trophy opener on August 28, with the final scheduled for September 11 — overlapping with India's Asia Cup campaign, set to begin September 10 in the UAE.
India begin their Asia Cup campaign against the UAE in Dubai on September 10, followed by the marquee clash against Pakistan on September 14.
In the event Gill or teammates Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana get selected in the national squad for the Asia Cup or concurrent series, the selectors have named Shubman Rohilla (SSCB), Gurnoor Brar, and Anul Thakral as backups.
Gill will lead a 15-member squad that includes strong names like India left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, and Anshul Kamboj, who made his Test debut in the fourth Test against England.
Arshdeep, though part of the squad, didn't feature in the playing XI.
The Duleep Trophy will mark the start of the 2025-26 Indian domestic season, returning to its traditional zonal format.
North Zone Squad: Shubman Gill (captain; PCA), Ankit Kumar (vice-captain, HCA), Shubham Khajuria (JKCA), Ayush Badoni (DDCA), Yash Dhull (DDCA), Ankit Kalsi (HPCA), Nishant Sindhu (HCA), Sahil Lotra (JKCA), Mayank Dagar (HPCA), Yudhvir Singh Charak (JKCA), Arshdeep Singh (PCA), Harshit Rana (DDCA), Anshul Kamboj (HCA), Auqib Nabi (JKCA), Kanhaiya Wadhawan (wicketkeeper; JKCA). Shami's Test career in doubt? BCCI insider makes big claim about future: 'One needs to know if he is keen'

Mohammed Shami has not played Tests for India since the ICC World Test Championship final in June 2023. While there's no doubt over his quality, Shami's prolonged fitness issue could bring an early end to his Test career, a BCCI insider has suggested. read more Mohammed Shami's prolonged struggle with fitness could soon bring an end to his Test career unless the 34-year-old Bengal pacer manages to script a turnaround with his fitness and form, a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) insider has revealed. Shami last played for India in the Champions Trophy 2025 final and also featured in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, enduring a poor outing. Yet, he failed to be a part of the Test squad in England. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD During the team selection press conference, chairman of BCCCI selectors, Ajit Agarkar, had said that Shami was not fit enough to play five Tests in England, hence they decided to look at other options. 'We'd rather pick guys fit and available rather than waiting,' Agarkar said. Shami is now looking to launch a comeback to the Indian team with the upcoming Duleep Trophy that starts on 28 August. The fast bowler has been named in the East Zone squad. Shami's Test future in limbo due to poor fitness Now, a BCCI insider has revealed to the Telegraph that the upcoming Duleep Trophy could prove to be much more than a cricket tournament for Shami. The pacer would have to use the East Zone matches to prove his fitness. 'If Shami comes up with an impact-making performance against North Zone, the selectors will certainly take notice because his quality cannot be ruled out,' a BCCI source said. 'But what we need to see is whether he'll play even if East Zone clear the quarter-final stage and continue to make progress. Will his body permit, given his dodgy knee and hamstring? 'In the Ranji game, he used to bowl three-four overs in a spell and go off the ground. So, whether his body can take the rigours of a multi-day game goes on and on to be a tricky question.' A good performance in the Duleep Trophy can also open the door to a Test comeback for Shami. India play a two-match Test series against West Indies at home in October, but the BCCI insider feels the selectors are keen on focussing on younger fast bowlers as Shami continues to face fitness issues. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Yes, how Shami fares in this Duleep Trophy will present a clearer picture of the prospects of his Test comeback. But one also needs to know if Shami himself is keen on making a comeback in the longest format,' the Board official said. 'First of all, he wasn't dropped because of form. Fitness issues are the only reason why he couldn't travel to England. 'After missing the last tour of Australia, his presence was pretty much needed for the England series. The selectors had also spoken to him before finalising the squad, but he didn't sound too confident. That much-needed assurance from him was missing. 'Besides, age is not on Shami's side. The preference, thus, will be someone who still has seven-eight years of cricket left in him rather than an individual who'll be turning 35 soon,' the official added.

Aakash Chopra says Rohit, Virat retired from 'wrong format', feels they should have quit ODIs instead of Tests

New Delhi [India], August 12 (ANI): Amidst the media reports of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retiring from ODIs soon, former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra said that the Indian heavyweights retired from the wrong format and should have chosen to quit the 50-over format instead of Test cricket due to lack of ODI cricket happening in the present times. Days after skipper Shubman Gill led India to a brilliant 2-2 draw, reports started emerging that Rohit and Virat could be leaving ODIs as well, with both of them not in plans for the ICC Cricket World Cup in South Africa and Namibia scheduled for 2027 unless both play domestic 50-over cricket to prove their match fitness and form. Both cricketers had announced Test retirement ahead of India's tour to England back in May. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra said, "The truth is that they have said goodbye to the wrong format. They had left T20Is after winning the T20 World Cup, but the story might have been different had they continued to play Tests and said goodbye to ODIs. India played only six ODIs in 12 months before the Champions Trophy." "There is a possibility that you might play only six Tests in a year, but even if it is only six Tests, it's 30 days of cricket. If only six ODIs are played, it's just six days of cricket over a period of time. It will be more than 100 days from your last IPL match to the next ODI you will play. You are not playing at all. You are not practicing at all," he added. Chopra also pointed out that the gaps between ODI series these days are also "incredibly huge" and it would be difficult to sustain form, fitness, commitment to diet etc with just a few ODI games. "A three-match series gets over in seven to eight days. Then the next one would be after three months. Gaps are just incredibly huge, and you won't play first-class cricket in between. It's true that had they continued playing Test cricket and left ODIs, staying in the groove would have been a lot easier," he said. "When you have retired from Tests, and ODI cricket is not played much, it is not going to make a lot of sense. So just two months of high-intensity IPL, where you would get to play 14 to 16 innings, and then you would play three matches after six months, and then three matches after another three months. I think it is very, very difficult," Chopra observed. Virat and Rohit are two of the finest ODI players produced by India, with Virat having made 14,181 runs in 302 matches and 290 innings at an average of 57.88, with 51 centuries and 74 fifties. His best score is 183. On the other hand, Rohit has scored 11,168 runs in 272 matches and 265 innings at an average of 48.76, with 32 centuries and 59 fifties and a best score of 264. Both last played ODIs in the ICC Champions Trophy, which they won, with Virat scoring 218 runs in five matches at an average of 54.50, with a century against Pakistan and a knock of 84 against Australia in the semifinals being his top contributions. Rohit had a more mixed tournament but nonetheless came in clutch with a title-sealing 76 in the final, ending the tournament with 180 runs at an average of 36.00 and a strike rate of 100.00. The legendary duo has sustained a sensational run of form since 2023, the World Cup year. Virat has scored 1,710 runs in 37 matches and 34 innings at an average of 61.07, while striking at above 95, with seven centuries and 10 fifties. His best score is 166*. In 38 ODIs and 37 innings, Rohit has scored 1,714 runs at an average of 48.97, with a stupendous strike rate of 117.24, with three centuries and 12 fifties, with his best score being 131. Their next ODI assignment will be three matches against Australia, starting from October 19 onwards. With three more ODIs scheduled from November to December against South Africa at home, three against New Zealand in January at home, and a summer tour to England for three ODIs in July, fans would be hoping that Rohit and Virat make the most of these outings with their consistency and reflexes to keep their chances of going to the World Cup alive.
