Hyderabad: Archaeological Survey of India's epigraphy division has successfully deciphered a newly discovered set of copper plates from Kodad. These plates reveal the coronation date of Vengi Chalukya king Vikramaditya II and sheds light on the genealogy of the Kakatiya dynasty's early ancestors.
According to ASI epigraphy division director K Muniratnam Reddy, the copper plates, comprising three leaves, were recovered from a graveyard in Kodad in Suryapet district. They were now being preserved by the department of heritage, Telangana. The inscription, composed in Sanskrit using Telugu script, was dated Saka 840, Phalguna ba 5, Saturday —corresponding to March 6, 918 CE. The plates bear a seal featuring the 'varaha' (boar) symbol and the legend 'Sri Tribhuvanankusha', confirming the document's origin during the reign of Vikramaditya II, son of Chalukya Bhima I and Vijayamahadevi.

The inscription records that Vikramaditya II issued a land grant during his coronation to Lokamamba, the widow of Gunda II, the then governor of Kondapalli Vishaya. Gunda II died in battle while supporting Vikramaditya II in a conflict against an usurper named Talapa, who earlier captured and imprisoned the boy king Vijayaditya. The grant refers to this event as 'madrajyabhisekha punyaghosana samaya' — the auspicious occasion of coronation following the reconquest.

New Garia Metro station closed after cracks found in pillars

1 2 Kolkata: The North-South Metro's terminal Kavi Subhas station at New Garia was closed temporarily after cracks were discovered in the last four pillars on which the Up platform stands. All trains are now being terminated at Shahid Khudiram, the elevated metro station at Dhalai Bridge in Garia. It is the second last metro station on the city's southern fringes. Metro Railway workers spotted the cracks in the pillars on Monday morning and alerted their supervisors, following which inspections were conducted. "Around 12.45 pm, the metro station's services were suspended. Preliminary investigations suggest ground subsidence due to the heavy downpour over the past few days. The uneven ground settlement seemed to have caused cracks on the four piers on the Up platform at Kavi Subhas station. As a measure of precaution and to ensure the safety of passengers, services to and from Kavi Subhas station have been withdrawn. We are trying to resume operations from the terminal station as soon as possible," a metro spokesperson said, adding, "Train services on the Blue Line will operate between Shahid Khudiram and Dakshineswar in both Up and Down directions till further notice. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Indonesia: Unsold Sofas at Bargain Prices (Prices May Surprise You) Sofas | Search Ads Search Now Undo The damage is being assessed. "I sensed something amiss as the digital signboards for the next train's timing went blank and trains arrived late," said Dipti Raut, a passenger at Park Street station. Officials confirmed this was the first time since the North-South Line's southern extension (in two phases in 2009-10) to New Garia from Tollygunge that a metro station was closed. "The design of the elevated section from Tollygunge to Kavi Subhas is flawed. The pier strengthening work was supposed to start long ago. But Metro Railway authorities have sat on inviting bids and initiating the repair work," said Subhasis Sengupta, vice-president, INTTUC-affiliated Metro Railway Progotisil Shramik Karmachari Union.

PTR plans steps to raise awareness about tiger conservation

1 2 Daltonganj: The Palamu Tiger Reserve (PTR) is gearing up for a series of events to commemorate International Tiger Day on July 29. The celebrations aim to raise awareness about tiger conservation and promote tourism in the region. One of the key highlights of the day will be the inauguration of smart classes for the relocated communities of Jaigeer and Kujrum at Polpol. This initiative is part of the ongoing efforts to support the families who have voluntarily moved out of the core areas of the reserve to minimise human-wildlife conflict. In a bid to boost tourism, preparations are underway for a detailed project report on a proposed tiger safari. The safari is planned to be located at Phutwagarh, outside the 1,150 sqkm of the reserve, ensuring it does not disturb the natural habitat of the tigers. The Tiger Conservation Foundation will hold a crucial meeting at Betla later in the day, which is considered vital for the future of the PTR. The event will be graced by state finance minister Radha Krishana Kishore and tourism minister Sudivya Kumar, along with other dignitaries and wildlife officials. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 25 of the Best Cities to Live In Learn More Undo Chief conservator of forest and field director of PTR, S R Natesh, addressed the media on Monday, highlighting the challenges and achievements of the reserve. He emphasised the need for inviolate areas for tigers, citing human disturbances as a significant concern. "We are committed to creating more space for wildlife," Natesh said. The reserve, one of India's first nine tiger reserves, is home to 20 villages with a population of 8,000 people. Natesh praised the voluntary relocation of 22 families from Jaigeer village, who have now settled at Polpol, enjoying a better quality of life. Looking ahead, chief minister Hemant Soren is expected to release the human-animal conflict action plan in early August. This plan, developed with contributions from the WWF and the Wildlife Institute of India, aims to address and mitigate conflicts between humans and wildlife. Natesh also touched upon the ongoing discussions regarding a third railway track through the PTR, describing it as a "well-coordinated effort." Security concerns related to military camps within the reserve were acknowledged, though details were not elaborated.
